1 And [kai] I looked, [eido] and, [kai] lo, [idou] a Lamb [arnion] stood [histemi] on [epi] the mount [oros] Sion, [Sion] and [kai] with [meta] him [autos] an hundred [hekaton] forty [tessarakonta] and four [tessares] thousand, [chilias] having [echo] his [autos] Father's [pater] name [onoma] written [grapho] in [epi] their [autos] foreheads. [metopon] KJV-Interlinear
1 And I looked, and behold, the Lamb was standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His name and the name of His Father written on their foreheads. NASB
The lamb is a reference to the work of Christ on the Cross, making His sacrifice in our place, to purchase our lives out of the bondage of eternal condemnation due to sin and death. Defeating both, Christ has paved the way for our salvation, for the mere price of only faith in Him and what He accomplished for us.
Mount Zion is a reference to the vast body of doctrine, in which we are able to acquire completion of our essence in life, through spiritual growth and advancement to maturity.
Accompanying Him in this vision of Johns, are 144,000 believers who were first introduced in chapter seven. These are the evangelists that will spread the gospel throughout the world, to both Jews and Gentiles, ultimately leading many millions of people to faith in Christ and therefore their salvation, during the worst possible circumstances in all of world history.
These 144,000 will have the name of Christ on their foreheads, referring to their mental attitude and faith and commitment to Christ and truth. This in sharp contrast to the masses of people who will have freely imprinted in their minds, their faith in the beast and evil.
The name of His Father, refers to God the Father, who authored the divine plan, the Son carried out that plan. This distinguishes Christianity from all other religions, cults, philosophies, etc. This makes Christianity unique and describes the relationship that believers have with the one true God, whereas all other systems of belief possess no relationship to anything but evil.
What this is not, is, it is not a summation of the only people that are going to be saved in the tribulation. For the Bible is clear in describing that many millions of people will be saved during the Tribulation, perhaps most of which will be due to the evangelistic efforts of these 144,000 Jewish evangelists.
Too many groups have come along in history claiming to be the 144,000, and of course they are only misguided if not deceivingly false in their efforts to attract members or converts, or simply attempting to gain notoriety for themselves.
Revelation is very clear in defining this group of people as those who will live concurrent with the Tribulation, and not in some other era of history. A further description of this group will come up in subsequent verses in this chapter.
Chapter thirteen describes the worst of the worst kind of leadership in all of human history.
Chapter fourteen describes the most phenomenal victory accomplished while faced with the most overwhelming odds in all of human history.
The picture opens up with Christ’s work of salvation, doctrine the food for eternity, and the efforts of evangelism in the face of overwhelming adversity.
With all of their combined power and ability and might, both political, philosophically, and militarily, Satan, and the anti-christ use and abuse their power and position to destroy truth and what is right for everyone.
But, with the Word of truth alone, and no bullets, no rebellion, no underground movement and so forth, God defeats all of the forces of evil in short order.
