Romans 8:9

Copyright Ó 2016 J. Neely
Romans 8:9

9 But [de] ye [humeis] are [este] not [ou] in [en] the flesh [sarx], but [alla] in [en] the Spirit [pneuma], if so be [ei per] that the Spirit [pneuma] of God [theos] dwell [oikeo] in [en] you [humin]. Now [de] if any man [ei tis] have [echo] not [ou] the Spirit [pneuma] of Christ [Christos], he [houtos] is [esti] none [ou] of his [autos].   KJV-Interlinear

9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. ESV

If you are not in the flesh, or in the carnal state, then you are in the spiritual state.

When you are in the spiritual state, or in fellowship, then the Holy Spirit controls your life.

The Spirit of Christ, is also referred to as Bible doctrine that resides in your soul, and by which your soul and your life or led.

If you lack Bible doctrine, because you have not learned Bible doctrine, because you have not taken the time to learn it by means of instruction in a daily study, then by default, your life does not belong to Christ or to doctrine or to God, simply because you have ignored the whole process.

Jesus Christ is God. Bible doctrine is the written word of Jesus Christ in the form of the written word. And by learning Bible doctrine, you in effect are placing Christ in yourself.

Bible doctrine is the mind of Christ. And learning Bible doctrine places the mind of Christ in you.

All unbelievers lack this entire process, and are therefore not in Christ, and therefore not Christ in them. They are unsaved.

All believers are saved, but after salvation they have an obligation to learn Bible doctrine and grow up within their spiritual life, in order to fulfill and complete their life.

The spirit of God, refers to the living breathing function of Gods word within you. And the only way to have Gods word within you, is to learn it by means of instruction on a daily basis.

Romans 8:8

8 So then [de] they that are [on] in [en] the flesh [sarx] cannot [ou] [dunamai] please [aresko] God [theos].   KJV-Interlinear

8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. ESV

As we stated a couple of studies ago, there are only two environments in which you can live your life, the first is the carnal environment, which is also referred to as the flesh, and the second is the spiritual environment.

You can only know the difference between the two, by learning Bible doctrine.

The carnal state is the out of fellowship state.

The spiritual state is the in-fellowship state.

Life in the spiritual life in a relationship with God is functional only when a person is in fellowship.

The fellowship state is only available to believers in Christ, and is not available to unbelievers.

God is pleased only when you live your life in fellowship, because that is where your spiritual life functions, and where your relationship with God likewise is functional.

Living out of fellowship, or in the carnal state, you are living outside of Gods will, and in a state where your spiritual life and your relationship with God does not function.

And needless to say, God is not pleased when your spiritual life is dead in the water so to speak.

7 Because [dioti] the carnal [sarx] mind [phronema] is enmity [echthra] against [eis] God [theos]: for [gar] it is [hupotasso] not [ou] subject [hupotasso] to the law [nomos] of God [theos], neither [oude] indeed [gar] can be [dunamai].   KJV-Interlinear

7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. ESV

The carnal life is also referred to as the fleshy life. Living in the carnal sphere, you are living outside the will of God, and therefore hostile or in opposition to God, because you are not following Gods plan.

The carnal life, in effect rejects Gods plan, which rejects Gods law, and therefore does not see itself as being accountable to God, or righteousness, or justice, or truth, or to anything but itself.

Life without God is incapable of functioning on its own. God is the glue that holds everything together. Rejecting the glue, rejects the very foundation of creation.

Rejecting God, means you are in effect rejecting everything including yourself, including your own belief.

Rejecting God, means by default, that you presume you can do everything on your own, which you cannot.

Gods plan is Jesus Christ, who does all and is all. Rejecting Gods plan means rejecting Christ, which also means rejecting Gods plan.

Rejecting God also means rejecting truth, which means accepting lies, which is obviously the dumbest thing that anyone can do.

Romans 8:6

Romans 8:6

6 For [gar] to be [phronema] carnally [sarx] minded [phronema] is death [thanatos]; but [de] to be [phronema] spiritually [pneuma] minded [phronema] is life [zoe] and [kai] peace [eirene].   KJV-Interlinear

6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. ESV

The worst thing that anyone can do, is to ignore learning Bible doctrine by means of instruction in a daily study. Too many people read verses, or make what they think are spiritual comments, but go no further. And consequently, their life goes no further.

There are two spheres, and only two spheres, or environments, in which you can live your life.

The first sphere or environment, is the carnal environment, which we also call being out of fellowship. In this environment you are controlled by the sin nature.

The second sphere or environment, is called the spiritual environment, which we call being in fellowship. In this environment you are controlled by the Holy Spirit.

Note, that in either sphere you cannot detect or measure or sense or feel the sin nature or the Holy Spirit. These are things that are beyond the human senses.

Each of these environments are mutually exclusive, which means, you are in one or the other, but never both simultaneously.

All unbelievers, live perpetually in the carnal state.

All believers in Christ, can live in either the carnal or the spiritual state. The determining factor is sin. Commit a sin and you shift to the carnal state. Confess the sin and you shift to the spiritual state. We call the shifting, being in fellowship or being out of fellowship.

The carnal state is a state that is outside the will of God, and therefore outside of a functional relationship with God.

The carnal state is where the spiritual life does not function, and is therefore a form of death, which we can call a non-functional spiritual state. Death is a word that can be used to describe no function or no production.

Life, on the other hand is a term that can be used to describe production or function, when one is in fellowship, and therefore has an active relationship with God.

Therefore, when you are out of fellowship, your spiritual life does not function, and produces nothing.

However, when you are in fellowship, you are spiritually minded, meaning influenced by the Holy Spirit and Bible doctrine within your soul, and you are advancing, or in a state where advancement can occur, in your spiritual life, toward the objective of spiritual maturity, which we call peace.

Romans 8:5

Romans 8:5

5 For [gar] they that are [on] after [kata] the flesh [sarx] do mind [phroneo] the things [ho] of the flesh [sarx]; but [de] they that are after [kata] the Spirit [pneuma] the things [ho] of the Spirit [pneuma].   KJV-Interlinear

5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. ESV

As we saw in the last verse, living according to the flesh, refers to a person who lives outside the spiritual requirements of the spiritual life. In other words, they do not confess their sins, they do not learn Bible doctrine by means of a daily instruction, they simply do not follow the spiritual requirements as laid out in the Bible.

The phrase living according to the spirit, or as stated, they that are after the spirit, refers to believers in Christ, who confess their sins on a regular basis in order to live inside the fellowship sphere, who pursue a daily study in Bible doctrine by means of instruction, and therefore gain an understanding of the spiritual life, and consequently grow up in their spiritual life, fulfilling their purpose in life as God intends.

Living according to the flesh, simply means you disregard all of those spiritual things. People may pretend to be obedient or spiritual, but in reality they are not.

Living according to the spirit, is a simple phrase that describes a functioning spiritual life of the believer in Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:4

Romans 8:4

4 That [hina] the righteousness [dikaioma] of the law [nomos] might be fulfilled [pleroo] in [en] us [hemin], who walk [peripateo] not [me] after [kata] the flesh [sarx], but [alla] after [kata] the Spirit [pneuma].   KJV-Interlinear

4  in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. ESV

The phrase, righteousness of the law, describes the perfection that we must have before we can have a relationship with God. God is perfect, therefore we must be perfect.

The law, here refers to the Mosaic law. The law spells out the requirements of perfection. But, we already know, that man is incapable of meeting those requirements.

Therefore, we need someone else who will stand in our place, and meet those requirements, but more than that, someone who will pay the price of our failure.

And of course that someone is Jesus Christ.

When Christ went to the cross, He had lived the perfect life. He was therefore, qualified to pay the price of sin in our behalf.

Walking according to the flesh, simply refers to a person trying to live their life, apart from faith in Christ.

Walking according to the spirit, refers to a person who is living their life, in accordance with the faith requirements of Christ. Namely, faith for salvation, as well as faith by means of a daily Bible study wherein we learn and grow up in our spiritual life.

Romans 8:3

Romans 8:3

3 For [gar] what the law [nomos] could not do [adunatos], in [en] that [hos] it was weak [astheneo] through [dia] the flesh [sarx], God [theos] sending [pempo] his own [heautou] Son [huios] in [en] the likeness [homoioma] of sinful [hamartia] flesh [sarx], and [kai] for [peri] sin [hamartia], condemned [katakrino] sin [hamartia] in [en] the flesh [sarx]:   KJV-Interlinear

3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, ESV

God has provided salvation and eternal life by means of His work on the cross, and made available to us, through faith.

The Mosaic law identifies the perfect life, however the flesh, being weakened by the sin nature, prevents that perfect life.

Since no man was able to live the perfect life, and therefore qualify as a legitimate sacrifice in payment for sin, then God had to become man, which means God became the likeness of man, in order to do what the common man is incapable of doing.

Jesus Christ, is God.
Jesus Christ was born as a human male, in order to live among humanity as a man.
Jesus Christ was exposed to sin, while in the flesh, but never succumbed to sin.

Therefore, Jesus Christ condemned sin, while in the flesh, and then fulfill the payment in full of sin, while in the flesh.

And this is a work that no other human being is capable of doing.

Jesus was born an infant baby, He grew up for thirty years to adulthood, He conducted His ministry for three-and-a-half-years beyond that, He suffered heart aches and pressures and temptations galore, even being nailed to the cross. And He never committed even a single sin.

He conducted His life in perfection.
He fulfilled His work in perfection.

And He is the only person that was qualified for, and capable of, completing the work of salvation.

Romans 8:2

Copyright Ó 2016 J. Neely
Romans 8:2

2 For [gar] the law [nomos] of the Spirit [pneuma] of life [zoe] in [en] Christ [Christos] Jesus [Iesous] hath made [eleutheroo] me [me] free [eleutheroo] from [apo] the law [nomos] of sin [hamartia] and [kai] death [thanatos].   KJV-Interlinear

2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. ESV

Paul designates two separate types of law. The first is referred to as the law of the spirit of life, and the second is referred to as the law of sin. The word for law, is a general reference to the rules or commands or influence, by which our life is governed.

The law of sin enters into our life when we are born, because the sin nature is a part of our physical body, and remains with us throughout our entire life while living in this world.

We can’t live without our physical body, therefore we cannot escape our relationship with the sin nature, on a physical level.

And the sin nature has such a powerful influence, such that, if we did not have any mental restraint, then we would be totally helpless so far as the sin nature is concerned.

However, God came up with a plan, that gives us a level playing field with the sin nature, and a defense against its influences.

And that defense of course, comes in the form of Jesus Christ, and His work on the cross, and our faith in Him, which identifies us with Him, and therefore protects us against the power of the sin nature.

Without Christ, and doctrine, and faith, we are totally helpless, and in total slavery to the sin nature.

Being born into this world with the sin nature, places us under the Mosaic law, which means we would have to earn our way out of the sin nature, by means of our own effort. And no person is capable of doing that. Thus the law of the sin nature and our total helplessness within that law.

However, Christ went to the cross, and paid the price of sin, thus providing us a way out from under the law of the sin nature.

And faith in Christ, is that way out.

For, by means of His work on the cross, we are set free, through faith, and thus are no longer under the requirement of working our own way out of sin, by our own effort, which we cannot do.

The law of the spirit, identifies the whole concept of Christ and His work of salvation, of our faith, of our study and knowledge of Bible doctrine, of our spiritual life, and the spiritual process in its entirety.

The spiritual process is entirely the design and work of God. Within the spiritual process we merely listen and learn and benefit.

God gets all of the credit. We get no credit, for we do no work within the spiritual life worthy of credit. The spiritual life comes to us in its entirety, and is a gift from God.

Romans 8:1

Copyright Ó 2016 J. Neely
Romans 8:1

1 There is therefore [ara] now [nun] no [oudeis] condemnation [katakrima] to them which are in [en] Christ [Christos] Jesus [Iesous], who walk [peripateo] not [me] after [kata] the flesh [sarx], but [alla] after [kata] the Spirit [pneuma].   KJV-Interlinear

1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. ESV

Therefore, there is no condemnation because of salvation, as there is condemnation through the law of Moses.

This does not mean that we are exempt from sin, or the repercussions of sin.

What it does mean is that the condemnation of the law, does not apply to those who have believed in Jesus Christ and are saved.

Disregard doctrine in your spiritual life, and by default live in sin, then you will suffer the consequences to go with sin, in this life. You will also lose out on the opportunities of the spiritual life, and lose out on the rewards of eternity as a result of an advanced spiritual life.

However, once saved always saved. And regardless of how you live your life, whether good or bad, as a believer in Christ, your destiny after death will be heaven.

Only those who have rejected Jesus Christ, and have not believed in Jesus Christ, does the condemnation of an eternal Lake of Fire, apply.

Remember however, that that condemnation of unbelief, results from the failure to achieve salvation through works. Sin is not the issue in eternal condemnation, because Christ paid the price of all sin. However, rejecting Christ, leads you to your own efforts only, and that is works, and as we have already seen, works cannot achieve what Christ has achieved on the cross.

We receive the benefit of His work by means of faith, which is believing in Christ.

We don’t have to work for salvation, Christ has already worked for salvation.

We cannot lose salvation, because once we have believed, you cannot undo that belief. A thought that has already occurred, cannot be removed as though it never occurred. Once saved always saved. And that is eternal security.
