Psalms 6:10

Psalms 6:10

10 Let all mine enemies ['oyeb] be ashamed [buwsh] and sore [ma`od] vexed: [bahal] let them return [shuwb] and be ashamed [buwsh] suddenly. [rega`] KJV-Interlinear

10 All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly dismayed; They shall turn back, they shall suddenly be ashamed. NASB

All enemies of God, whether conceptual or philosophical or man caused, should never be successful in their plans against God, against good, against truth.

And here David offers a valid and correct prayer, that all evil will be stopped, unsuccessful, and done so quickly.

The word for ashamed, ‘buwsh,’ means to be made pale, disappointed, delayed, to be confounded.

Sore vexed, means troubled, consternation, trembling.

To return suddenly, means to be turned back, to be reversed in their progress, to be stopped and sent back, to be alarmed, anxious, dismayed, agitated.

Therefore in this psalm, David sheds light on the troubles of the world and how they apply to the believer.

Every believer will face problems, and at times multiple problems, and at times extreme problems during their life.

And while the temptation might be to turn to the world for a solution, there is no solution in the world, for troubles that come from the world.

Therefore, to turn to God is the only solution, but there again the believer has to live their life and abide by Gods rules, or the solutions from God will not be there either.

There is only one way to have a good life in this world, and that is to be obedient to Gods will, as we laid out yesterday.

That will not stop the troubles that the world will throw at you, but life will be far easier, when you have God in your corner during the fight.  God in fact will do the fighting for you, but only if you comply with His terms in the spiritual life.

Many people try to define their own spiritual life.  And their definition usually includes works, or their effort in some fashion, such that they take to themselves credit for their efforts.  And that approach is an error.

God is neither impressed nor accepting of mans efforts.  Jesus Christ went to the Cross and did all that was necessary for salvation.  All man has to do is believe, in order to receive it.

Jesus Christ controls history.  He creates life and takes it away.  Man has nothing to do with the creation of life, nor can man remove it or control it.

The Holy Spirit makes the word of God clear and perspicuous and funnels it into and through your human spirit and soul.  Man has no part in that process other than listening or reading.

There is nothing in your life with which you may take credit to yourself for anything.  God made you.  God preserves you within your environment.  God shapes you through doctrine.

And if you allow it, then God will defend, preserve, and bless you in every situation imaginable.  But, you have to play by His rules, not yours.

Ninety-nine percent of all spiritual lives fail because people do not comply with Gods will.  They try to re-invent or re-do, or shape their life on their own efforts, or they pick and choose what Biblical principles they will or will not observe, and through that arrogance, they fail.  They try to impress everyone, and end up impressing no one.

They live most of their life out of fellowship, and therefore never have a functional spiritual life, except perhaps in the first few moments following their salvation, and then they skid downhill for the rest of their life.

The secret of the successful spiritual life, is fellowship through daily confession or as often as is necessary, conducting yourself in a daily study such that you learn doctrine, using what you learn so that you gain an understanding, repeating that process daily throughout your life so that you grow and gain wisdom, and most important of all, continuing this path throughout your entire life, and never giving up, especially when the world throws everything it has at you, trying to isolate you from life or from your hopes and dreams.

Cast your cares on Him, for He cares for you. Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.  Stop worrying about anything, but in everything through prayer and supplication, let your requests be made known unto God.  For the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will garrison your heart and mind through Christ Jesus.  For of Him, and to Him, and through Him are all things, to whom be glory and majesty, dominion and power, before time, now and forever.  Amen (believe it).

Psalms 6:8

Psalms 6:8

8 Depart [cuwr] from me, all ye workers [pa`al] of iniquity; ['aven] for the LORD [Yahovah] hath heard [shama`] the voice [qowl] of my weeping. [Bakiy] KJV-Interlinear

8 Depart from me, all you who do iniquity, For the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping. NASB

All who do iniquity is a collective reference to all sources of trouble, not necessarily just from people.

Pressures come to us from this world in many ways.  Most of our trouble comes into our lives because of our own incorrect thinking and thoughts, originating from other people, from the systems and bureaucracies that operate in the world, and from natural disasters regardless of its source (weather, genetic, etc.).

But to the believer who is obedient toward God, the believer who does not react in sin or hate or blame or search for excuses or retaliation or runs away from responsibility and so forth, then there is an assurance that God will hear the prayer.

Pressures come into our lives from many sources, and most of them are mere tests to see how we will react.  Most people fail because they get upset, and allow hate and anger and bitterness and blame toward others to enter into their life.  For them, God does not hear the prayers and for them the frustrations of life only continue and/or grow until they either crack or repent.  Stubbornness and arrogance is a cruel lesson to learn by.

The previous verses describe the troubles that can come into our life, making us miserable and fill us up with despair.

This verse instructs that there is an answer, but only if you do not give in to the temptation of anger and hate and so forth.

Very few can stick to their guns, because God can apply pressure, and keep on applying pressure, in order to prove your metal or lack of it.

This life in not your destiny nor your purpose. However, too many make the details of this life into a do or die event.  They cry out when plans, their plans, do not come to pass.  And that occurs because their plans are not Gods, but their own.

And so the pouting and hate and even sabotage of their life and their family and all that exists in their life, becomes more important to them than simple truth. They dislike something and therefore will destroy everything, rather than humble themselves.

But for those who adapt, persevere, humble themselves, even though they do not have everything that they want out of life, and look to Gods plan, and wait on Him, then answers do come. But they come in Gods timing, not yours.

Psalms 6:7

Psalms 6:7

7 Mine eye [`ayin] is consumed [`ashesh] because of grief; [ka`ac] it waxeth old [`athaq] because of all mine enemies. [tsarar] KJV-Interlinear

7 My eye has wasted away with grief; It has become old because of all my adversaries. NASB

The eye means the eye in a literal sense, but figuratively, ‘ayin,’ means affliction, perception, environment, outward appearance, landscape, and comes to means the world around me.

Consume means to shrink or to fail, to waste away.

Grief means sorrow, provocation, anger, indignation.

Wax old means to grow old, to grow weary, tired, to leave off, to remove, to waste away.

Enemies, means oppressors, adversaries, narrow, shut up, concealed, bind.

The world is overwhelming for the individual person.  No one can stand up to the world, let alone their immediate surroundings in life.

This world is an adversary and never a friend, and as such, when push comes to shove, you lose.

The pressures in life can become insurmountable or impossible, and that can cause the person to lose self control (the tears of the last verse), and to lose hope.

Life will consume you to the point that you will, with certainty, waste away, and shrink into the insignificance of desperation.

Life causes you to grow old prematurely, and with age and stress comes graying or white hair, and loss of energy.

The world is your enemy.  The world is anti-God, and promotes no solution to life’s problems.  The world has but one solution and that is the destruction of your life, whether now on in the next life.

The world is often called cosmos diabolicus, or an extension of Satan's evil policies, or Satan’s world.  It stands for all of the policies and viewpoints, philosophies and religions that come from anti-truth views.

Embrace the world and you embrace a path to self destruction, or a wearing out of your, self-essence.

God, through doctrine, on the other hand, provides you a path to the completion of your life, not its destruction.

Psalms 6:6

Psalms 6:6

6 I am weary [yaga`] with my groaning; ['anachah] all the night [layil] make I my bed [mittah] to swim; [sachah] I water [macah] my couch [`eres] with my tears. [dim`ah] KJV-Interlinear

6 I am weary with my sighing; Every night I make my bed swim, I dissolve my couch with my tears. NASB

To water a couch is to flood ones bed with massive tears.  To cry all night is to be sleepless, in anguish, in distress, full of anxiety to the point of tremendous sorrow.

This verse describes extreme pressure.

And in this world, in this life, everyone will sooner or later, have this experience, and come face to face with massive pressure.

The anxiety becomes unbearable, intolerable,  mentally agonizing.

On the one hand, you feel like nothing is working for you, that life has nothing to offer.  You feel like you have been left behind, forgotten, misused.

You feel worthless and of no value to yourself, much less anyone else.

You look around and there is nothing in his world, no one in this world to whom you can turn, and you cry privately to God in deep anguish and despair.

Your tears are uncontrollable.  Your feeling of helplessness and loss, goes way beyond yourself.  You look around and nothing changes.  There is no hope, no miracle, nothing magical happening or even going to happen in your life.

And this verse and the next, describe the lowest of the lowest of feelings in ones life.

And yet there is hope.

Remember when you were a baby.  Of course you don’t.  But when you had your first breath of life, you were totally helpless, and useless, if you will.  You knew nothing and could do nothing.  You could not even care for yourself.

And yet here you are.  How ever old you are today, there was time when your existence depended totally on someone else, and you could do nothing for yourself. Yet here you are.

God is in His heaven and God provides for every possible circumstance in life.  Nothing happens by accident.  Nothing takes God by surprise.

One day you will come face to face with possibly your worst fears, whatever they might be. And on that day, you will either pass or fail Gods test of faith.  And that all depends on your spiritual preparation today.

Psalms 6:5

Copyright Ó 2010 J. Neely

Psalms 6:5

5 For in death [maveth] there is no remembrance [zeker] of thee: in the grave [sha'owl] who shall give thee thanks [yadah]? KJV-Interlinear

5 For there is no mention of Thee in death; In Sheol who will give Thee thanks? NASB

This psalm addresses life and all of the burdens and opportunities that accompany life.  Life is not easy.  Opportunity in this world does not exist in the permanent sense.

And when we cross over into the realm of death, then all that we had is left behind.  Our contact with life, with our senses, with the opportunities of the spiritual life, in this life, vanish and are gone, when we are gone.

In death, in the grave, are expressions that describe our absence from life.  And our relationship with God, that is to say, our opportunity to develop a relationship with God, vanishes in death.

You have only life, life in this world, in which you may develop a relationship with God.

For some it may be just a few years, for others it may be several decades, but nevertheless, whatever your defined lifespan comes out to be, you have only this life to grow up in your spiritual life.

After death, your opportunity to learn and to grow, ceases.

Now, remember that as a believer, you will go to heaven and live there forever.  In that regard, you will be learning and experiencing new things forever.  But this psalm is not addressing that.

In this life, you have the opportunity to grow in your spiritual life, in order to prepare yourself for eternity.  And that includes advancing in your spiritual life for the purpose of receiving eternal reward.  That reward credit, does not develop after death.  In death, it all stops and you go to heaven with whatever spiritual assets you acquire in this life.

In death who will remember?  Who will be able to apply their spiritual knowledge in life?  Who will give thanks?  Who will function in the spiritual life as an observance of thanks and humility to God?

Death has many meanings in the Bible, and this death is primarily associated with the dust residue that is left behind.  Now then, what dust can remember?  None.  What dust can function?  None.  What dust can give things?  None.  What dust can grow up?  None.  What dust can earn reward?  None.

Right now your link with life is from your soul, through the physical body that God gave you.  You have intellect, eyesight, hearing, the sense of touch and taste and such things.  And your access to this world is through those attributes.

Likewise, your access to God is through your spiritual attributes, through the spiritual senses (so to speak) that God has provided you.  Namely, salvation through faith, spirituality through confession, growth through doctrine, production through application of that doctrine to your daily life.

In death, that all goes away.

In life, the opportunity to define your eternal life, exists.  In death that opportunity stops.

In life, you can make choices to study or not.  In death, even that choice, ends.

In life, your eternal future opportunity exceeds the imagination.  That is a huge benefit and blessing.

In death, the opportunity to acquire that blessing, stops.

Therefore, David pleads with God, ‘Do not take me away in death, because that will end a phenomenal opportunity for me.  And that opportunity means more than anything, because it extends into eternity, the value of which is beyond calculation.  And, I do not want to lose that.’

You shouldn’t either.

How does that commercial go?  ‘A mind is a terrible thing to waste.’

But in reality, ‘a spiritual life and spiritual opportunity are infinitely more valuable and a far greater potential loss, if ignored.’

Psalms 6:4

Copyright Ó 2010 J. Neely

Psalms 6:4

4 Return, [shuwb] O LORD, [Yahovah] deliver [chalats] my soul: [nephesh] oh save [yasha`] me for thy mercies [checed]' sake. KJV-Interlinear

4 Return, O Lord, rescue my soul; Save me because of Thy lovingkindness. NASB

This is the devils world. Troubles and problems galore, exist only because of that fact.  Were it not for the devil and his anti-God policies and attitude, there would be no troubles or problems whatsoever.

Furthermore, were it not for the foundational pattern of evil, which originated from Satan, there would be no sin, no death, no unfairness, nothing negative in life.

But, Satan brought sin through deceit, into the human realm, and man kept that pattern, adopting it and even enhancing it through mans own attitude and negative volition toward truth.

In all things evil, there is no part of God.  Therefore, when trouble strikes in our lives, it has the feel, or the sensation that God has left us (of course He has not), but that is the emotional feeling that eventually surrounds each one of us as the pressures of life flow over us.

Therefore David calls for Gods return.  This is an appeal for relief from the troubles that we are experiencing.

God is always there, but when we face difficulties, it feels as though He is not.  The first thing we want is for the troubles to go away, and a call is made to God, to return (as it were) and remove or relieve us from those problems.

God in ones life means happiness and prosperity, health and well being.  Difficulties in ones life is a picture of God not being in ones life, and therefore a need for Him.  This is symbolic certainly, and an example in life which we can learn from, in order to see how the world operates without God, and how life is when God is active and present within our life.

Looking around, you can see numerous examples of life in examples of prosperity, and in examples of corruption, and everything in between, of course.

And looking around, you have many illustrations in life that should teach you that the more desirable things in life come out of good and out of prosperity and so forth.  And, the less desirable things in life come out of the negatives of life (drugs, crime, poverty, etc).

No one wants to be poor, and yet many are poor.  Everyone wants to be wealthy, and yet few are wealthy.

But that is how the world operates.  And even though we have very little control over the world around us, we do have some semblance of control in our spiritual life and the next life beyond, because we can decide to pursue our spiritual life, or not.

To pursue the spiritual life is to pursue the good things.  To ignore the spiritual life, is to pursue the bad things.

To pursue the spiritual life is bringing God into your life.  To ignore the spiritual life, is to push God out of your life.  The repercussions are, or should be, obvious.

Therefore, return, O God, for the good things are more desirable for the very basis, the very foundation of my life.

And this is done by God, because of His mercies (grace in action).  The world has no grace, no mercy, no concern whatsoever for you.  You just need to decide which path in life, is best, and then pursue it.  God of course is the better path.

Psalms 6:3

Copyright Ó 2010 J. Neely

Psalms 6:3

3 My soul [nephesh] is also sore [ma`od] vexed: [bahal] but thou, O LORD, [Yahovah] how long? KJV-Interlinear

3 And my soul is greatly dismayed; But Thou, O Lord —  how long? NASB

The word for soul, refers to the fundamental life source that each one of us possesses.  It refers to the core life of a breathing creature and is applied to both body and mind as one, all inclusive unit.

Sorely vexed, indicates a level of phenomenal stress that goes beyond the emotions, but indicates stresses that penetrate to the very core of ones existence.  Both body and mind are under pressure, to the extent that it is impossible to describe the depth of the pressure on ones self, such is the great degree of the pressure on and in ones life.

And then David, asks the question that everyone who has ever lived, has probably asked at some time in their life.  A plea to God in a broken sentence, as thought starting the plea, ‘But You, O Lord…’

And such is the greatness of the pressure, that words don’t seem to be adequate, or the proper words just don’t seem to come into ones mind.  And finally David, simply drops off the thought with, ‘How long?’

How long will this pressure continue? How long will this pain continue?  How long will this suffering continue?  How long will my situation continue?

Whatever your situation in life, there will come a time when things will seem like they will never get better.  Your agony, your anxiety, your despair, your trouble, your pressure, your heartache, your helplessness, your whatever your problem or situation is, will seem like it is insurmountable, or perhaps never ending, or without a solution.

You may even complain, or begin to doubt, or begin to give up.

But the mere fact that you turn to God, whether in pleading for help, or even in complaint, frustration, or anger, you are at least on the right track.

Life can be difficult more often than not.  And for most folks the pressures can become seemingly insurmountable at times.

For one person the threshold may be less than for another person, but the degree of pressure that you can tolerate is irrelevant.  God will push you and push you in testing and trials (sometimes you bring the problems onto yourself), until you reach your limit, and then the real test begins.

Will you turn to God, or will you turn away and run from life, or blame others?

Will you examine your own life and try to figure out, objectively, if you need to make changes in yourself?

Will you give up, or will you persevere, knowing that God has your best interests in mind, that somehow, something will come together to bring relief into your life?

Will you recognize that this is the devils world, and that all things bad, are due to the policies of evil that he represents, and not due to God?

Will you recognize that it is God who cares more about you, than even you do about yourself?

Will you continue with your daily studies, even though they seem to be going nowhere, and/or your prayers not being heard?

Psalms 6:2

Copyright Ó 2010 J. Neely

Psalms 6:2

2 Have mercy [chanan] upon me, O LORD; [Yahovah] for I am weak: ['umlal] O LORD, [Yahovah] heal [rapha'] me; for my bones [`etsem] are vexed. [bahal] KJV-Interlinear

2 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am pining away; Heal me, O Lord, for my bones are dismayed. NASB

Grace means favor, and mercy is grace in action, or the act of providing some favor or favorable action for the one requesting it.

When a person cries for mercy, he is in a predicament that causes him worry, anxiety, pain, pressure, anguish and so forth. The situation is not good and the person is not able to change the situation.  It is probably beyond their control.

The person crying for mercy is stuck between a rock and a hard place, so to speak.  Caught without any options or controls, and cannot get himself out of the problem.  He is helpless and hopeless.

I am weak, ‘umlal,’ meaning to be dried out, in a state of famine or drought, blighted, strength withered and fading.

When you are a young person, you are bulletproof.  But when you are older, then your strength is more lacking.  You can feel the life slipping out of you as your energy and strength fade and are lesser that when you were young.

Heal me, is a phrase that indicates a sickness that is beyond human help.  The sick person is lacking the means or resources to correct his own ailments or stresses, whatever they might be.  There is only one person who can legitimately heal and that is God.

This is a request to heal the spiritual deficiencies, not physical ailments.  Although the physical provides the example, this is not a request to God to cure diseases or sicknesses.  Do not pursue a belief that prayer will heal the flu or a broken bone.  That is not the principle here.

Spiritual deficiencies can only be cured by God.  And he does it through doctrine.

If you are sick, then you go to a doctor and get the proper treatment.  But when your ailment is of a spiritual nature, then God is the answer, and God has already provided His answer, in the form of Bible doctrine.  Your spiritual cure is through doctrine, through learning it by means of a daily study.

The bones are the framework of the human body.  Within the bones is implied the strength of the body.  And when the bones are vexed, they are stressed to beyond their limits to function.

The bones symbolize the mental aspects of the spiritual life.  Lacking doctrinal framework means lacking spiritual strength.  Lacking spiritual strength means to be lacking spiritual resources.  And lacking spiritual resources means to be lacking a relationship with God, the one and only person who is capable of solving all of your spiritual needs.

Doctrine is the foundation and framework of the soul.  It is on that framework, that spiritual resources are constructed.  No frame, no structure.  Weak frame, weak structure.

David has crossed the line, and he knows it.  David has sinned such that he knows that God is going to clobber him, big time.  And even though the world has many resources with which to mess up ones life, fear of God is much greater in David, because God has control over ones entire life for all of eternity.  The world by comparison has no power that can match that.

Therefore, fearing the worst, David prays of mercy and a lessening of Gods discipline, with the application of Gods love.  Knowing that God disciplines with love and in doing so, one comes out of the discipline with a greater understanding of life, of God, and of themselves.

Regardless of your physical strength, regardless of your worldly resources or possessions, if you do not have spiritual framework in your soul, then you are indeed vexed, weak, helpless with regard to reality and life.
