Isaiah 5:8

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:8

8 Woe [howy] unto them that join [naga`] house [bayith] to house, [bayith] that lay [qarab] field [sadeh] to field, [sadeh] till there be no ['ephec] place, [maqowm] that they may be placed [yashab] alone in the midst [qereb] of the earth ['erets]! KJV-Interlinear

8 Woe to those who add house to house and join field to field,, Until there is no more room,, So that you have to live alone in the midst of the land! NASB

The first of the crimes of people is avarice, which is greed, materialism, covetousness, acquisition lust and so forth.  These are all things that are non-spiritual by their nature.  This includes false spirituality as well as any invented philosophy or religion, or the desire to approach God on your terms, not His.  But most greed is directed at things or pleasures or status and so forth.

To join house to house, is a reference to the acquisition of many homes or parcels of real-estate, to make bigger, as in cities or metropolis areas.  This is a reference to the arrogance and pride of humanity in making or having more, and/or bigger and/or better.  Homes are also where you live within your soul, or the pattern of life you choose for yourself.  That too is your home.

To lay field to field, means to join larger parcels of real-estate, to cause to approach, to bring together into ones possession or view of the eye. The pride of wealth, or desire, or more.  The greater focus of your entire life.

Until there be no more place, means simply until you have it all, or the ultimate greed or ownership or control. To be the master of the realm, so to speak.  Until your mind and soul are completely absorbed in the greed, leaving no room for God.

To be placed alone, means until you have driven all others out and you have it all with no one else having anything.  And in this case too, until you have driven God completely out of your life.

These terms can be used for individual greed or bureaucratic greed.

In the midst of the earth, means all that is in the world, for the individual or organization cannot control anything that is outside of this world.  The spiritual world is inaccessible from the physical world.

These terms are not restricted to only real-estate, but apply to anything that you might consider as collectible or desirable.  Just the mere fact that you want something as the solution to your objective of happiness or fulfillment in life, classifies you as avarice in your pattern of life.

And while this characteristic can apply to anyone in history, there will come a time at the end of history, when society worldwide on the whole, will be like this.  And that will be the time of the most ruthless and horrific period in all of human history.

Isaiah 5:7

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Isaiah 5:7

7 For the vineyard [kerem] of the LORD [Yahovah] of hosts [tsaba'] is the house [bayith] of Israel, [Yisra'el] and the men ['iysh] of Judah [Yahuwdah] his pleasant [sha`shua`] plant: [neta`] and he looked [qavah] for judgment, [mishpat] but behold oppression; [mispach] for righteousness, [tsadaqah] but behold a cry. [tsa`aqah] KJV-Interlinear

7 For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, And the men of Judah His delightful plant., Thus He looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed;, For righteousness, but behold, a cry of distress.  NASB

And now God, through Isaiah, gives us the application of this parable, along with a paronomasia, or a play on words.

God is the farmer.  The vineyard is the object of His persistent and unceasing nurturing and care.  This is His only vineyard, which is the nation of Israel.  Among all of the nations of the world, Israel represents the single and only nation that God cares for.

Judah symbolizes Gods people.  All who believe in the Savior, who we know as Jesus Christ, are Gods people and members of Gods family and therefore members of Gods chosen people and therefore Gods chosen nation, which is the total collection of all of Gods people.

God planted his vineyard, which is His people, and nurtured them with doctrine, or truth.

God looked for judgment, which means He looked for common sense, discernment in truth, good decisions and found only the shedding of blood, which refers to all manner of sins and evil.  Sin is death, spiritual death and therefore the shedding of blood symbolizes this death.

God looks for righteousness, which here represents clear thinking, orientation to life and reality, and He found only clamor, disorder, anarchy, confusion and so forth.

And this is the paronomasia.  God looked for discernment and found blood, He looked for clarity and found confusion.

God has provided us all with the greatest provision possible, even our difficult circumstances are blessings for instruction, and unfortunately most folks disregard His truth and pursue their own version of truth, which is not truth.  And for this, there are repercussions.

Psalm 18:10

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Psalm 18:10

10 And he rode [rakab] upon a cherub, [karuwb] and did fly: [`uwph] yea, he did fly [da'ah] upon the wings [kanaph] of the wind. [ruwach]KJV-Interlinear

10 And He rode upon a cherub and flew; And He sped upon the wings of the wind. NASB

A cherub is not a horse that you throw a saddle on the then ride off into the sunset or to wherever.

The cherub term is used in the bible to portray imagery of a concept or action.  Often noted as angels, the cherub was a figurative term that represents the power and majesty, and ultimately the essence of God.

The cherub is first mentioned as guarding the gates of the garden, Gen. 3:24, thus preventing sinful man from re-entering paradise by means of his own effort. Thus the plan of God is protected and sovereign over mans plans.

Cherubs are represented as carrying the throne of God, Ezek. 1:10, thus symbolizing truth.

Cherubs are used in images of wood overlaid with gold and positioned on either end of the Ark of the Covenant, Ex. 25:18, 1 Kg 6:23-28.  God is represented as dwelling between the cherubim, Ex. 25:22, Num. 7:89, Psa. 80:1, 99:1.  Here they represent the God-man, the savior, satisfying the righteousness and justice of God.

In this verse, God is represented as riding on the clouds of the storm, in complete control as though driving the storm.

Flying on the wings of the storm, represents the swiftness of flight and speed.  With complete purpose and speed, without hesitance or pause, God advances along with complete control, drive, determination and confidence toward a predetermined destination and result.  No one and nothing can stop the storm.

These images are intended to help you learn the vast difference between you and this world, and God.  So that perhaps you will recognize His power and your impotence, His majesty and your worthlessness, His plan and your failure, His provision and your need.

Psalm 18:9

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Psalm 18:9

9 He bowed [natah] the heavens [shamayim] also, and came down: [yarad] and darkness [`araphel] was under his feet. [regel] KJV-Interlinear

9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down With thick darkness under His feet. NASB

The symbolism continues of the overwhelming power and presence of God.

The heavens seem to come down to the earth in the form of heavy storm filled clouds riding low in the sky, churning from powerful winds, appearing violent across the entire horizon and beyond.

The darkness of the storm covers the internal strength of its power.  The size and mass of the storm is impossible to determine.  Its source, its duration, its destination as it rolls across the land, also are impossible to determne.

Even with todays modern science and satellite photographs of storms that show their huge mass and strength, but cannot completely forecast their ultimate result.

Today, we might use examples of a galaxy or a black hole, which are things that are beyond the human abilty to measure.  Their magnitude and power being immense.

But this imagery is of a storm that is right down in the face of the observer, up close and personal.  And this leaves the observer nowhere to run or hide or escape, and certainly no means of determining its total magnitude.

This leaves the arrogance of the observer, amounting to nothing, his mockery, a shambles, his attitude in check, and makes it very clear that God is the almighty, the all-powerful and in all of creation, there is no equal.

Ephesians 3:7

Copyright Ó 2012 J. Neely
Ephesians 3:7

7 Whereof [hos] I was made [ginomai] a minister, [diakonos] according [kata] to the gift [dorea] of the grace [charis] of God [theos] given [didomi] unto me [moi] by [kata] the effectual working [energeia] of his [autos] power. [dunamis] KJV-Interlinear

7 of which I was made a minister, according to the gift of God's grace which was given to me according to the working of His power. NASB

When Paul was still on the road to Damascus and still blinded by the light, Christ commanded him to arise for he was to be appointed a minister.

Paul did not seek the appointment, nor did he ask for it.  Christ simply appointed him and that, as they say, was that.

God knows what he is doing and what the outcome will be from that which He does.

The gospel and the scriptures were going to be spread throughout the world and they were going to be started by Paul and the apostles and all who God appoints throughout history.

In every generation, God appoints people to teach doctrine.  None are appointed so dramatically as Paul, but none the less, all appointments regardless of the office held by any individual, come from God and from no other source.

If you are a ditch digger, you were appointed to that work by God.  If you are a president, you were appointed to that office by God.  This appointment does not mean that you are somehow perfect because God chose you, all it means is that God appointed you in accordance with His divine plan, and you fit His purpose, not yours.  After all there are many people in positions from throughout history who have been totally evil, and yet their appointments came from God, just as your appointment, in whatever you do, came from God.

Often times God will appointment those of whom the people want, and so evil is perpetuated, however unfortunately, but God does allow people to have that which they want and deserve, even though their choices are really bad.  In this fashion, evil chooses evil and disaster comes upon a selfish and evil people by their own hands.

In this case, we have Paul, who was appointed by God, to be the minister of doctrine, and not only doctrine in general, but of new doctrines of the Church Age, so that all may know and understand Gods plan more thoroughly.

Even in verse ten, when we get there, angels will learn of Gods plan just as man learns it.  Angels don't know the details of history, but must view it as it unfolds, just as we learn of it.

This appointment was due to the grace of God.  Grace means favor, and anything that God does for you, is a huge favor indeed.  Your birth was by grace.  Your life was and is by grace.  All that you have and are, is courtesy of the grace of God.  Even obligations and burdens and responsibilities placed upon you, are favors that God has given you in order to help you advance in your spiritual life.

Pauls appointment came with its drama and pressures and sufferings and so forth, and eventually ended with his execution, and it was still the best thing that could possibly have happened to him.

Regardless of the things that are in your life, all that you see and hear and experience and do or don’t do, are there for your benefit and growth.  You can either take advantage of your situation and advance in your spiritual life, or you can grumble and moan and complain and waste your God given opportunities for greatness.

The spiritual life is designed for greatness for all of eternity.  Unfortunately far too many people grumble through life and do not recognize the poor decisions they are making and what they are really losing.
