1 Timothy 1:20
DailyBibleStudy.Org
20 Of whom [hos] is [esti] Hymenaeus [Humenaios] and [kai] Alexander; [Alexandros] whom [hos] I have delivered [paradidomi] unto Satan, [Satanas] that [hina] they may learn [paideuo] not [me] to blaspheme. [blasphemeo] KJV-Interlinear
20 Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered over to Satan, so that they may be taught not to blaspheme. NASB
And finally Paul mentions two men, by name. Two men that were spreading false information, and as a result, causing trouble among the Christians.
Nothing is known about Hymenaeus or Alexander. Hymenaeus is mentioned one more time in 2 Tim 2:17, along with another false teacher, Philetus. And a man named Alexander is mentioned as an opponent of the Christian faith in 2 Tim 4:14-15, which may or may not be the same man.
However, the purpose of this mentioning of these two men has nothing to do with their names, but with the repercussions they will be made to experience as a result of their actions of promoting false ideas.
By implication, Paul has tried to straighten them out in their thinking, but after so many tries, and we are not told how many, Paul simply gave up on them and in effect has given them up to learn from life’s experiences.
Satan is the ruler of the world.
In this world, you learn from academic teaching, and you learn from experience. Sometimes we call it being book smart or educated, or street smart. And this is an expression which Paul uses. These two men refused to listen and learn from Pauls instruction, so, Paul is going to let them learn from life.
Whenever you have the choice to learn, learning from an organized instructional approach is usually far better than learning from life’s experiences. That does not mean that experience is a bad way to learn, because experience is a great way to learn when it is complimented by an academic learning approach, or when it is a positive approach.
However, when your mind is closed to good advice, and when you think you know it all, then you leave yourself open for learning the hard way. And that is generally not the preferred way to learn anything, because learning the hard way means trouble, pain, suffering, anxiety, loss, and so forth.
Paul tried his best, but these men would not listen, so Paul simply gave up on them. There is only so much that you can do, and then you have to let God deal with them in His own way, in His own time.
Learn, ‘paideuo,’ means to learn from life’s experiences. And that is what Paul is going to let them do. They will learn the hard way, and now God will be the instructor.
When you suffer in life, that does not mean that you have been bad and deserved your suffering. Life is full of hardships. It is the devils world. But there is enough suffering to go around in a normal day to day life, without looking for it.
Blasphemy is any form of slander against God. It is not limited to verbal language. Any sin, any attitude, any disobedience, etc., certainly qualifies as blasphemy. Even neglect in your mandated daily bible study, is a form of blasphemy, in that you are not pursuing truth, but coasting along in the views of the world.
And feeling that what you are doing is right, is not good enough, if you are not obedient to Gods mandate to listen, to learn, and to grow up. And thus life enters into your space and that can mean trouble.
Certainly being indifferent is bad enough, but when you promote false ideas, attitudes, and opinions, then that is even worse in that you are attempting to lead others down the path of your incorrect beliefs, thus misleading them.
And every now and then, God will step into the picture and drop the hammer on your life, in order to get you to wake up.
For some people it works, but for most, it does not work. And when masses of society drift away from truth, then the magnitude of suffering grows exponentially. And in that case you will see regional or national or international trouble of some type, as well as individual difficulties in ones life.
Everyone has the opportunity to make their life better or worse.
You can assume responsibility and control over your own life, by becoming proactive in your life, and going after, seeking out, pursuing that which you need to learn, or you can sit back and wait for someone else to bring things to you. But that is what an infant does.
The infant can’t do anything for itself. It has to cry to get attention, it has to wait for someone else to care for it. All it can do, or even wants to do, is be happy and let the world drift by. And as such, the infant has nothing to show for its existence.
So, you can remain a spiritual infant and have nothing to show for your life, even learning the hard way, or you can take charge of your destiny, and place yourself under Gods control, and accomplish a life beyond your imagination.

1 Timothy 1:19

19 Holding [echo] faith, [pistis] and [kai] a good [agathos] conscience; [suneidesis] which [hos] some [tis] having put away [apotheomai] concerning [peri] faith [pistis] have made shipwreck: [nauageo] KJV-Interlinear
19 keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith. NASB
Paul warns and encourages Timothy, to keep in the Word, faith and good conscience, which many have rejected.
Faith is a reference to the content of the word of God. Faith is not hoping or wishing, or praying for miracles, or asking others to pray for you.
Faith is the resultant construction of confidence due to ones detailed study (daily study), of the Word of God.
A good conscience is the correct application of knowledge learned.
Paul is addressing believers here, not unbelievers. Since unbelievers do not have a relationship with God, because they have not believed, then they have no viable faith. They have nothing real to believe in, for their life.
Believers on the other hand, can go from hot to cold, and everything in between, with their attitude toward God, Christ, and doctrine.
Most will be high on God, high on Jesus, and cold toward doctrine. After all, Bible doctrine is something that you have to study, and who wants to do that, when it is much easier to be just emotional? And so they sing the songs, chant the chants, quote the verses, and otherwise exercise only their emotional desires. But they haven’t learned anything, and thus have not grown up spiritually.
Faith is based on learned information. Faith steers a straight course in life. Emotions are responses or reactions to situations in life. Life situations change and so do ones emotions. Eventually the course of emotion or emotional revolt, and it is a revolt because it runs counter to Gods mandate to learn and grow up, anyway, emotional revolt eventually ends up in a shipwreck for ones life.
A shipwreck means poor navigation ending up on the rocks of life, stranded from the hub of life.
Bible doctrine is the hub of life. Sound doctrine in the soul is the basis for a full life, not emotion.
Timothy is commanded to guard doctrine, 1 Tim. 6:20, be nourished by it, 1 Tim. 4:6, and keep it, 1 Tim. 4:13; 2 Tim 4:2, and advance to maturity through the study of doctrine, 2 Tim. 2:15.
Being shipwrecked is where most folks fail in life. This is where the spiritual lives of most folks do not work out as they had hoped. This is why most folks, when they fall on hard times, get frustrated and blame God or anyone else who happens by.
They just refuse to study doctrine, daily.
And study does not mean your self-defined home-schooled method of study, but Gods approved method of being taught by means of a consistent and academic approach, word by word, verse by verse, precept by precept, learning, applying, and growing up.
This is the way of a safe and sure and successful and full course through life.

1 Timothy 1:18

18 This [taute] charge [paraggelia] I commit [paratithemi] unto thee, [soi] son [teknon] Timothy, [Timotheos] according to [kata] the prophecies [propheteia] which went before [proago] on [epi] thee, [se] that [hina] thou [strateuomai] by [en] them [autos] mightest war [strateuomai] a good [kalos] warfare; [strateia] KJV-Interlinear
18 This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may fight the good fight, NASB
Paul gave Timothy a charge, ‘paraggelia,’ a command, a military order, which was not an optional request, but a mandate for Timothy to pursue his ministry, or to pursue the duties of his spiritual life.
There are many such examples of people being commanded to pursue their God given duties, Moses (Ex 4:10-16), Isaiah (Isa 6:8-11), Jeremiah (Jer 20:9), Ezekiel (Ezek 2:7-8), and Jonah (Jonah 1:1-2).
And even though you might not be functioning as a minister on this earth, you also have responsibilities as a student of the Word of God, to pursue your studies, and resultant duties as God prescribes (not as you see fit), specifically for your life.
Entrust, ‘paratithemi,’ means to guard as you would an extremely valuable treasure placed in your care. And that treasure is Bible doctrine. But entrust means to handle and use responsibly. And in the case of learning Bible doctrine, that means to guard it with objectivity, and not with haphazard opinions or views of a popular nature.
Far too many people lack the academic foundation for understanding Bible doctrine. They go, on whatever is popular, or whatever makes sense to them at some given moment, and they become automatic critics. They take verses at random, and utilize them for emotional reinforcement. People will even build their own views in a random and haphazard way, and that is an irresponsible approach to ones spiritual life. It opens the door up for total spiritual dysfunction and mis-direction. And if you entrench yourself with wrong ideas, then your spiritual life is placed in jeopardy.
Bible doctrine is the single most important possession that you can have. Great care should be exercised when approaching Gods Word. And great care should be utilized when studying Gods Word.
Prophecies here refers to the teaching of scripture, and has nothing to do with predictions of future events.
To fight the good fight, means to dedicate yourself to your daily studies. To be consistent, and responsible, and proactive in the pursuit of your daily studies. To stick with your studies because you have an internal desire and motivation to want to learn, and to grow up in your spiritual life.
And so this is the charge that Paul gave to Timothy. And through Timothy, the same charge is given to you and to every believer.
In our Revelation study, we will be reviewing the various attitudes that people have with regard to their spiritual lives. Most rank their spiritual effort with a very low, if at all, priority. Yet they demonstrate the usual rah-rah’s or sounds of excitement, but their actions never follow their expressions.
We all have a mandate to grow up in our spiritual life. Why? Because therein is our greatest life beyond imagination. However, your spiritual motivation has to exist, and your actions must follow Gods mandates and methods for learning and growing, not your own system for learning.

17 Now [de] unto the King [basileus] eternal, [aion] immortal, [aphthartos] invisible, [aoratos] the only [monos] wise [sophos] God, [theos] be honour [time] and [kai] glory [doxa] for [eis] ever [aion] and ever. [aion] Amen. [amen] KJV-Interlinear
17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. NASB
Paul ends this passage with a praise description of Jesus Christ.
King – the foundation of absolute power and sovereignty.
Eternal – a period of time, an era, which has no beginning and no end.
Immortal – no limitations, no decay or decline, no corruptibility, a state of continuance in stability.
Invisible – incapable of being seen by human means, in the spiritual sense, undetectable by human methods.
Only wise God – only means single, one and only, excludes everyone and everything else. There is no other.
Wise means knowledge, understanding, omniscient, all knowing.
God is the highest possible being. There is no other, higher, smarter, better, etc. than God.
Honor – respect, distinguished, reputable. Perfect reputation.
Glory – magnificence, perfection, splendor, brilliance.
And so this is the description of Jesus Christ, of whom many religions reject, diminish, or ignore, who Himself is the only God, the only wise God, who is eternal and perfect, all powerful and sovereign of the universe and more.
And now to Him who is able to keep you from falling, and to present you without blemish, before the presence of His glory, with exceeding joy. To the only wise God, even Jesus Christ our Lord. To whom be glory and majesty, dominion and power, before time, now and forever. Amen. Believe it, because it is so.

16 Howbeit [alla] for this [touto] cause [dia] I obtained mercy, [eleeo] that [hina] in [en] me [emoi] first [protos] Jesus [Iesous] Christ [Christos] might shew forth [endeiknumi] all [pas] longsuffering, [makrothumia] for [pros] a pattern [hupotuposis] to them which should hereafter [mello] believe [pisteuo] on [epi] him [autos] to [eis] life [zoe] everlasting. [aionios] KJV-Interlinear
16 And yet for this reason I found mercy, in order that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience, as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life. NASB
Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. By definition, sinners are failures in life, lost to all of eternity and have no way out. All of humanity, consists of sinners. Jesus is the only exception. You are not an exception.
Therefore, no one can earn, or work for their salvation, because He did not come into the world to save those who are capable of saving themselves. No one is capable. That dismisses all forms of works, or elitism, or superiority concepts as possible mechanisms for salvation. That dismisses all forms of religion, philosophy, cults, beliefs, etc., that are based on works or human effort or human attributes. That leaves Christianity as the only viable relationship with God, through Christ.
All abilities, all talents, all social status, all achievements, that anyone may possess or occupy in life, is God given, and not human earned. God formed the clay vessels, not the vessels themselves. You cannot impress God by being you, because He made you. You did not make yourself. There is no such thing as the self made individual.
And so, God came into this world to save sinners, and in doing so, He hands out His grace as a gift to all that will accept it.
Paul has used himself as the example of a total failure in life, and if God can save Paul, who was a lying, cheating, self-righteous, murdering misfit, then God is able to save anyone. That includes you.
There is no one who is beyond salvation, unless they are already dead, and not too many of them are likely to be reading this study, now. That’s my humor for the day.
So if you are not dead, then you must be alive, and if you are alive, then God is able to save you. And you receive your salvation by believing in Jesus Christ. You simply state in your own heart, in your own thoughts, ‘Father, I believe in Jesus Christ.’
Father, is God the Father, and it is to Him that all prayers are addressed. Expressions of faith are in effect prayers, and they are always answered with approval and acceptance. That is Gods promise. The expression of faith to receive salvation, takes but a moment of time, and it doesn’t even hurt.
‘Makrothumia,’ means patience, patience with humanity. And God has all of the patience in the world and more. He has looked down through the tunnel of time and knows how long you are going to reject Him. But He will wait until you come to your senses, or until you have committed yourself to eternal doom. In either case, you cannot blame God for your procrastination.
But the longer you hold out, the greater the risk of your losing everything, forever. And ones eternal destiny is something that no one should gamble with, because there is nothing to be gained by rejecting Christ, and everything to lose.
Paul is the pattern of a loser. The pattern (sin in all categories) is in view here, not the deeds or their quantity. There is no one who can claim themselves as being a worse sinner.

15 This is a faithful [pistos] saying, [logos] and [kai] worthy [axios] of all [pas] acceptation, [apodoche] that [hoti] Christ [Christos] Jesus [Iesous] came [erchomai] into [eis] the world [kosmos] to save [sozo] sinners; [hamartolos] of whom [hos] I [ego] am [eimi] chief. [protos] KJV-Interlinear
15 It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all. NASB
At the time of this letter written to Timothy by Paul, very few letters had been written. And there were no cataloging of the letters written thus far, into some sort of formal book had been made either.
The only spreading of the gospel, the only spreading of doctrinal information, was by word of mouth, since the letters previously written by Paul were very few in number.
However, here Paul tells us by the phrase, ‘It is a faithful saying,’ which means that ‘It is well known by everyone.’
These things that we have been studying, and the content of this verse, were common knowledge throughout the region and beyond.
Why did Christ come into the world? And this is a reference to His first advent. He came into the world to save sinners.
He did not come into the world, the first time, to establish His kingdom.
And to save sinners, Christ became a sacrifice in our place, in order to pay the price of sin. Why? Because we couldn’t pay that price and survive. Once death had consumed us, we would be lost forever, and unable to return to life.
However, Christ came into the world, which means that he already existed, He as God, was not born, not created, did not come into existence for the very first time, but came into the world (the sphere of humanity) through the person of Jesus, John 1:9; 3:19; 6:14; 11:27; 12:46; 16:28; 18:37.
So Christ who is God, became a man, the unique person in all of the universe, both God and man together in one person. That is why in Deu. 6:4, it is said, ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord is God, the Lord is unique.’
Lord, is the personal reference for the Son, the second person of the Trinity. The Lord is one, means unique. The Israelis from their very beginning, knew and understood the uniqueness of the Messiah, and why he was coming into the world.
Somewhere along the way, in the last few centuries prior to His birth, as Judaism became the dominate religion, this principle got lost, and the Pharisees and scribes and such, decided that the Lords coming was to establish His Kingdom. They did not see any reason for any necessity of their being saved.
But there were to be two advents of Christ. The first was to save, and then the second was to establish His Kingdom. The first has been accomplished, the Second remains future.
There are several verses speaking to the purpose of His first advent (to save sinners, to provide salvation), Matt 1:21, Matt 9:13, Luke 19:10, Jn. 3:17.
Paul describes himself as one of the worst of the worst of sinners, and if God is able to save him, then God is able to save anyone. There is no one on this earth, no one in history, for whom God could not save. And if you look back in history, then you certainly can find many examples of people who were far worse than you. And God is able to provide the mechanism of salvation for everyone, and He did.
The only deciding factor is, will each individual believe in Christ? And for that, God will not force anyone to believe in Himself, but allows everyone to make up their own mind regarding Him.

14 And [de] the grace [charis] of our [hemon] Lord [kurios] was exceeding abundant [huperpleonazo] with [meta] faith [pistis] and [kai] love [agape] which [ho] is in [en] Christ [Christos] Jesus. [Iesous] KJV-Interlinear
14 and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. NASB
Faith, grace, and love are frequently mentioned and linked together in the Bible, Rom 5:20, 2 Cor 9:8, Eph 1:15; Eph 2:8, 3:17; Col 1:4; 1 Thess 1:3; 3:6; 5:8; 2 Thess 1:3; Philem 5, Col 1:23, 1 John 3:14.
Despite the prevalence of sin in the world, whether promoted by individuals in ignorance, or intentionally by people or organizations who routinely promote false concepts, Gods grace is more than a match for them all collectively.
Paul describes abundance here as ‘more than.’ And ‘more than’ means, far beyond that which is required or necessary.
Similar wording is used in James for ‘greater’ grace, which likewise indicates blessings that far exceed the normal levels of blessing, and are used in relation to mature believers.
God does not have to allocate His grace to the world. God does not have to limit the grace that may be available to any given individual. There is more than enough to go around. There is never a shortage of grace.
Everyone can be a winner and receive the maximum blessing available, if everyone makes the effort.
In this world when there is a competition, and there is almost a competition for nearly everything that goes on, but only one person can win the winners prize. Only a few can win the highest honors, and the rest go without. Even those who try really hard, gain nothing, if they do not win.
But in Gods plan, anyone who obeys His commands, can be a winner of the maximum blessings that will be available both now and especially in eternity. But the key here is obedience.
Paul uses faith and love here in conjunction with grace.
Grace is Gods policy for His divine plan. And grace is tied to truth.
Love is ‘agape,’ which refers to the content of the scriptures. Faith is ones conviction, ones belief, but not based on hope or wishes, but on facts, knowledge, wisdom, confidence.
Faith is developed and constructed from doctrine, learned doctrine. And learned doctrine comes from – learning.
Learning comes from a daily study of the scriptures, and daily study requires a self-disciplined commitment and desire, a genuine desire, to fulfill ones own life to the fullest.
Again, hoping and wishing, and even convincing yourself through emotional mechanisms, won’t accomplish the learning required to secure spiritual growth.
Gods grace comes to you, through only one source, Jesus Christ. This rules out all other religions, philosophies, and so forth. It even rules out the self defined spirituality that people come up with from time to time. Because if you are not engaged in a daily study of the Bible, a study which is taught to you, then whatever you are doing, amounts to doing nothing.
Study of the word of God requires and demands a consistent and systematic and objective approach. And while folks want to think of themselves as self taught, they are not. They are only fooling themselves.
Lack of a legitimate study, makes you the potential victim of those who promote false views.
Only a legitimate daily study, will provide you with the defenses necessary to avoid the charlatans of the world. And more than that, it opens up the huge treasure of Gods grace for your life.

13 Who [ho] was [on] before [proteron] a blasphemer, [blasphemos] and [kai] a persecutor, [dioktes] and [kai] injurious: [hubristes] but [alla] I obtained mercy, [eleeo] because [hoti] I did [poieo] it ignorantly [agnoeo] in [en] unbelief. [apistia] KJV-Interlinear
13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. And yet I was shown mercy, because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; NASB
Your sins are not the issue in life, grace is.
Rom. 5:20
20 And the Law came in that the transgression might increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, NASB
The Law came into the world to demonstrate mans inability to live a perfect life. Once sin was recognized and defined, then its increase, is not the rise in the number of sins committed, but the accurate recognition of the sins that were already being committed. If you do not think you are a sinner, then you do not count your sins. Thus your count is zero. But once you recognize the definition of sin, then your count jumps off the chart. Thus the awareness or increase in the accurate count of what is already there.
But no matter what the sin count, and there are a lot of sins when you add the sins of all of humanity, for all of human history, grace is by far greater than any number of sins. Grace is by far greater than any category of sin.
Paul violated all ten of the Ten Commandments, even though he thought he was abiding by them all.
And for that matter, all people, that includes you, have violated all ten of the commandments. The first five dealing with God and the second five dealing with man. And all you have to do is go no further than your own thoughts. Then of course there are your actions and so forth, but once the thought has been entertained, then the sin line has been crossed.
The sin count is irrelevant. Whether you have murdered millions, or hated a single time, murder is murder and sin is a sin. There is no such thing as a good sin or a bad sin. Any sin, whether a little white lie or something more atrocious, is sufficient basis for permanent separation from God. Adam took only a single bite of the forbidden fruit.
And when we are born, at that moment, we are born spiritually dead. In Adam all have sinned. Our sin nature was handed down through birth, since the time of Adam. So we start out life with a strike out. We are born spiritually dead.
Then comes grace and grace is greater than sin or death, but a person has to believe in Christ and in so doing, accept Him as Lord and Savior and that includes the entire plan of God, and so forth. Believing is Christ is a single and simple thought, but it embraces a huge array of doctrinal principles that apply to salvation. And grace is one of them.
Pauls sins are well documented, Acts 26:10, 11, Acts 9:4-5; 22:7-8; 26:14-15, Acts 8:1, 3 and 9:1..
As a blasphemer, persecutor, and violent aggressor, Paul rejected truth in his pursuit of noble deeds, he rejected the rights of individuals in the name of his own personal beliefs, and he carried out his agenda even to the point of executing people in the name of good. All of this was the activity of evil, and nothing less. But he thought he was doing the right thing.
Lack of truth prevented him from knowing his error. But that did not prevent him from being held responsible for his own thoughts and actions. Guilty is guilty whether you know it or not.
Where grace is the policy of God, mercy is the action of grace. Mercy is the action of forgiveness that cancels out all of the flaws, blemishes, taints, sins etc., in ones life.
Grace is the policy made possible by means of the work of Christ on the Cross, wherein He took all of the sins of the world onto Himself and paid their price (death) in full. Thereby, paving the way for God to apply mercy to each one of us. Mercy is the removal of all of the misery that accompanies sin.
Grace removed the guilt of sin, and mercy removes the repercussion of misery that accompanies sin, through Gods compassion.
And why was this applied to Paul, who was the worst type of sinner?
Because Paul sinned in ignorance, and then repented. His repentance is his expression of faith for salvation, and confession after salvation, during the rest of his life. He was obedient in this respect, because this is Gods mandate and Paul did that which was expected of him.
And this applies to you as well. Salvation requires faith, and that takes only one single moment of thought in your life. And then confession is required of you on a daily basis, in order for you to maintain your fellowship status, and thus be able to grow up in your spiritual life.
Both faith one time, and confession many times (on a regular basis during the rest of your life), are mandated by God in order for you to receive the actions of grace – mercy.
But Paul did these things (sin) in ignorance. But once known (gospel or doctrine), then he is held accountable for his acceptance of Gods mandate or for his rejection. And this applies to us all as well.
Ignorance means simply, not knowing of something, before you actually come to know it. Ignorance goes away when you know something and then make a conscious decision to ignore or reject it.
Paul did not know of salvation by faith until that fateful day when Christ met him on the road and confronted him. Paul believed and therefore was saved. He could have rejected Christ and of course we would have never heard of Paul.
The Pharisees, for example, knew what they were doing, Jesus stood right in front of them and told them so, but they rejected Jesus as the Messiah. Those who continued to reject Jesus, were not saved, but those who finally believed in Jesus, received salvation.
And this is one application of grace and mercy because of ignorance.
There is also an application of grace and mercy with regard to ones spiritual growth when you have believed, but then turn away from doctrine during your life. Your salvation remains in tack of course, but your growth and blessings are reduced or removed, Heb. 6:4-6, when you knowingly ignore your responsibilities.
Ignorance of the spiritual life does not remove the mercies and blessings that accompany your spiritual life, but once you become aware of your spiritual responsibilities, and know that you are required to study and grow, etc, then your ignorance no longer applies, because you know, but you consciously ignore your responsibilities.
Do not think that your ignorance is better, because when God keeps you in this world, and brings you to the knowledge of doctrine, then He has a greater purpose for you, so you are far better off knowing what is expected of you, and then following through with it.
Knowing ones responsibilities, and ignoring them and continuing in willful sin (namely rejection of truth or rejection of ones responsibilities), then that can result in permanent judgment against you, Heb. 10:26-27. And for unbelievers that means the Lake of Fire, and for indifferent believers, that can mean none of the additional blessings, or no participation in blessings, that are available to mature or growing believers. And these permanent restrictions will last forever. Unless of course you change your ways and get with the study program, etc.
And there are two more principles related to ignorance. One for or unintentional sins, Num 15:22-29, and one for intentional sins, where the guilt shall be held against the person, Num. 15:30-31.
These two broad principles cover all peoples born into this world. Many will not live for a very long time, such as babies, or young children. Or many will not ever possess the mental cognizance to understand anything. For these and other similar examples, the principles of grace and mercy for ignorance, apply. They will be saved automatically, with no appropriate blessings lost, as God applies fairness in these cases.
So, you may be a habitual liar, you may be sitting on death row, you may have been married and divorced a thousand times, you may be a gossip, a prostitute, a thief, a self-righteous person, you may be a nag and a rag, you, whatever you are or have been or will be, is not the issue in life.
Gods grace is the issue, not you. And following that, your willingness and commitment to change yourself, by obeying Gods mandates, not by setting up your own standards of conduct.
If you are an unbeliever, then all you need do is believe in Christ, ‘Father, I believe in Jesus Christ.’ And that ends and concludes the salvation issue in your life. Now you are a believer and the issues of believers now apply.
If you are a believer, then what you think of doctrine, is the issue, the daily issue in your life. For your attitude toward doctrine will determine your spiritual growth, or lack of it. And that (your spiritual growth) will determine your blessings, or lack of them, for both now and in eternity.

Strength comes from truth. Faith comes from truth. Both strength and faith are not products of wishes or empty prayer or from the efforts of others, but are developed through the systematic daily study of the Word of God.
When you were born, what did you know? Nothing! You as an infant, had to be taught. As a toddler, as a teenager, even as a young adult, all that you know was from the teaching of others. There is nothing in your foundation of life that originated from yourself alone.
It is the same with your spiritual life, but somehow people get the idea that all they need do is read the Bible and the understanding automatically comes to them. Not so.
Remember one very important principle in life, this world, this life is not about you, but about the conflict between God and evil. And in that way, evil will do anything it can to derail your spiritual life, even to the point of confusing you through numerous translations of the Bible. Satan has no respect for God, for people, or the scriptures. And if he can skew things even just a little, he will, in order to bring confusion into your mind.
Therefore, your initial education in faith must come through a qualified instructor. And through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, you will easily be able to distinguish the truth from the false. But only if you approach your studies objectively. Preconceived ideas and bias, even stubborn opinions can disrupt your entire spiritual life.
Paul was biased to the maximum initially in his life, but God trained him through the scriptures, and through the apostles, and brought him to the point that he became the leading authority in doctrine, in his generation.
Paul was self-righteous and a murderer, but grace turned his life around.
You presumably are not as hard core as Paul was initially in his life. How much easier would it be to turn your life around? Only your stubbornness, only your arrogance, only your indifference will prevent you from fulfilling this verse in your life.
Paul was strengthened through doctrine. Pauls faith grew through doctrine. Paul became useful to God, not because of his personality, not because of his do-gooder approach to life, not because of his opinion of himself, but because of the doctrine that was resident in his soul, and for no other reason.
Paul was taught, and Paul studied constantly, and in that regard, Paul was obedient to God. And because Paul was prepared, repeat because Paul was prepared (in Gods eyes, not in his own eyes), then he became useful for service in Gods plan, not Pauls.
Unfortunately the Christian world is filled with indifference, or opinion, and not enough students of the Word. Does God have to lean down and tell you to go to class every day? Does God have to push you, as a parent constantly reminds their children of their responsibilities?
As adults, each person is obligated to see for themselves, what they must be doing each and everyday of their life. And Bible study is the single priority that all should accept and make a part of their daily routine.
But how many ignore this? How many find excuses of not having the time? How many have other ‘more important’ things to do? How many just don’t get around to it?
And what in this life is more important that your preparation of the next life?
Paul had the drive, the desire, the hunger to be the most that he could be. Do you? And if not, why not?
Jesus Christ created this universe. Jesus Christ controls history. Jesus Christ is the all powerful, sovereign master over all that is.
How important would it be to you, for Him to think of you as worthy for His service, worthy for participation in His plan?
How much effort is it really, for you, without anyone looking over your shoulder, without anyone reminding you every day, to open up your Bible every day, to engage in a daily study every day, to keep a notebook of your own, so that you can learn and grow and become in Gods eyes (not in your eyes), a worthy person for participation in His plan for all of humanity?

11 According [kata] to the glorious [doxa] gospel [euaggelion] of the blessed [makarios] God, [theos] which [hos] was committed to [pisteuo] my [ego] trust. [pisteuo] KJV-Interlinear
11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted. NASB
All that we have just studied in these past few verses, regarding phony prophets, phony instructors, phony self appointed experts on life, are revealed as frauds, by the only source of truth, which is the Bible. All other beliefs and philosophies are filled with flaws and inconsistencies.
Their purpose is a fraud, their intent is a fraud, their message is a fraud, and their promise of a result is a fraud.
All teaching which runs counter to that of the Bible (legitimate teaching contained within the Bible), is a fraud.
Even those who use the Bible as their source document, fail when they try to infuse their man-made rules into the daily actions of people, or when they try to warn of failure in your life because of something that you do, or do not do.
When works are added to the message, then the message fails. Because God does not look to your efforts, but to your thoughts.
What you think is what you are.
All people fail in life. No one will ever be perfect of their own accord.
No one can earn, nor will anyone ever deserve a place at Gods side. Only through grace, Gods grace, will we ever be able to attain more than this world offers. And through God, we can attain far more than this world has to offer.
Sin is mans failure. The Law represents mans inability to recover from that failure, on his own. The Law represents mans good deeds effort, which reinforces mans inability to match the high criteria that the Law demands for perfection.
But more than all of this, the Law came from God, and paints a picture of the perfection of Bible doctrine, which all of humanity has divorced and betrayed by way of sin, choosing the prostitute himself with the enticing views of the world.
And therein is the real result of mans indifference, fueled by mans arrogance and foolish notions, that cause man to presume that he knows more than he really does. Especially when there are far too many obvious knowledge voids in mans attributes. Do you know your own genetic code? Do you know the structure of the universe? Do you know the moment by moment weather for all of next month, or anytime for that matter? Can you cure disease?
It is easy to find questions that you do not have answers to, so why would anyone presume to know the facts of the afterlife?
For real answers we are forced to turn to truth, and there is only one source of truth, and that is the Bible. And to know that for sure, you can rule out all other religions, beliefs, and such, by discovering just a single objective flaw within them. And by objective we do not mean a debater’s convenient argument with cute twisted rhetoric, or by ones personal bias. That is the tool used by those who reject Christianity. They make up their own list of Christian flaws, which when examined correctly, fail to hold up.
And to know the truth, you have to be taught, you have to study, and you have to stick with it, every day of your life.

9 Knowing [eido] this, [touto] that [hoti] the law [nomos] is [keimai] not [ou] made [keimai] for a righteous man, [dikaios] but [de] for the lawless [anomos] and [kai] disobedient, [anupotaktos] for the ungodly [asebes] and [kai] for sinners, [hamartolos] for unholy [anosios] and [kai] profane, [bebelos] for murderers of fathers [patraloas] and [kai] murderers of mothers, [metraloas] for manslayers, [androphonos]
10 For whoremongers, [pornos] for them that defile themselves with mankind, [arsenokoites] for menstealers, [andrapodistes] for liars, [pseustes] for perjured persons, [epiorkos] and [kai] if there be any [ei tis] other thing [heteros] that is contrary [antikeimai] to sound [hugiaino] doctrine; [didaskalia] KJV-Interlinear
9 realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous man, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers
10 and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, NASB
If anyone could live a perfect life, then for whom would the Law have been created?
The law here is a reference to the Ten Commandments in part. Paul will list several transgressions which in part refers to the sins of man against God, and man against man.
God created the perfect standard. All rules of law, all rules differentiating right from wrong, came originally from God.
Man is incapable of creating his own standards. Look at the legislation of human governments throughout history. Even in our present day, legislation of laws ranges to the absurd. While one party or another constantly tries to create laws or legislation that is favorable to them. The counter part of that is that the same laws are unfavorable to others.
Mans efforts are filled with power lusts, unfairness, bias, favoritism, and so forth.
So, God created the Law from truth. And from truth, came mans indictment for mans failure to live up to the demands of the Law. Therefore, if the Law was made for sinners, and if humanity is nothing but sinners, then there is no one who can rise above the Law.
Paul begins with mans rebellion against God.
The lawless, ‘anomos,’ stands for those who have no interest in or no commitment to the laws or standards of society. This leads to rebellion. Ungodly, ‘asebes,’ refers to people who have no regard for anything sacred.
Of these first two categories, they are sinners. They have no regard for rules or law, because they have no regard for God or anything thing that carries the connotation of perfection that exists outside of the sphere of man. They reject truth.
The second pair of related flaws is unholy and profane. Unholy means to be indifferent toward God or anything that is holy. That leads to profanity, or the mental and verbal or even overt trampling of anything of a spiritual nature. And that means Christian nature, not false religions that claim spirituality. For false religions are an example of profanity against what is truth. And as for atheists, then it refers to their rejection of all manner of beliefs.
Lawlessness results in rebellion against truth, and that produces ungodliness, sinners, indifference, and blasphemy against truth, or anything related to truth.
The Law was made for such people. By rejecting truth, they see no need for their own salvation, or they figure that they can define their own destiny, without God.
The rest of Paul’s list in these two verses, comes from the second half of the Ten Commandments.
To kill ones father and mother is a reference to the dishonoring of ones parents, the fifth commandment.
Manslayers is a reference murderers, the sixth commandment.
Immoral men is a reference to violations of the legitimate marriage bed, the seventh commandment.
Kidnappers is a reference to theft, the eighth commandment.
Liars and perjurers is a reference to the ninth commandment.
And then Paul ends his list with a catch all, ‘whatever else,’ just to cover all of the bases with regard to sin and evil in humanity.
And all of these things are violations of ‘sound’ doctrine. Sound, ‘hugiaino,’ refers to hygiene, and is a reference to that which is clean, pure, healthy and wholesome.
And the wholesome instruction in life comes only from Bible doctrine.
Those who reject it are unclean, filthy, dirty, unwholesome. And unless you wash yourself, you cannot get clean. Doctrine is the only water that cleanses the filth of sin and evil, away from ones life. And this is only possible because Christ did the work that paved the way for cleaning up humanity.

1 Timothy 1:8

1 Timothy 1:8
DailyBibleStudy.Org
8 But [de] we know [eido] that [hoti] the law [nomos] is good, [kalos] if [ean] a man [tis] use [chraomai] it [autos] lawfully; [nomimos] KJV-Interlinear
8 But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, NASB
The term ‘law,’ has two connotations. First it represents the content of the Word of God, or truth as a general concept. And second, it refers specifically to the Mosaic Law or the Levitical Priesthood.
In Pauls time, the Mosaic Law was still very much in view and a point of contention between traditional Jews, and the new Christian movement.
And while the Law was not a mechanism for attaining salvation, there were many Jews who believed that salvation could be attained by keeping the Law. In other words, by living a good life.
This is where Judaism departed from the Old Testament teachings. And even though Judaism has its roots in the Old Testament scriptures, the departure evolved over the last several centuries B.C. as the Mosaic Law was transformed (by men) into a very complex system of works.
Islam, several centuries later adopted this same system or rather a similar one, but not as complicated with respect to works, and went further by rejecting the Savior (Christ), just as Judaism did, and then Islam also rejected the notion of the Trinity and adopted a one God, one prophet approach.
Whereas Judaism confirmed salvation by works, Islam took a more general approach to works, and went even further to suggest that even works may not be enough. Islam is vague in this regard, and Judaism is complex and subject to exceptions and subject to the interpretations of Jewish leaders.
Now, Paul is saying that the law (both concepts) are good, if a person approaches them correctly.
The word for good, ‘kalos,’ means useful. And in this regard, the Law is good or useful in that it provides humanity with a standard against which he can measure or compare his own life.
For the Law can never save, Rom 3:20, 28, Gal 2:16, 3:11, but it can demonstrate mans inability to fulfill the law, or live by it, because man is sinful by nature, and no man can live the perfect life. Therefore demonstrating the need for some outside and perfect intermediary, through which man can obtain salvation, since man cannot obtain it on his own.
Unfortunately, all religions, all beliefs whatsoever, misuse and misapply the principles of the Law, by presuming that it provides a guide by which a person can follow, and therefore be a perfect person.
The purpose of the Law, or of any system of good works, is to show that people are sinners, because they all fail the Law, and therefore are accountable to God, Rom. 3:19, and therefore need a savior, Gal. 3:24.
The Law, or good, is a morally right system, but the Law does not give you a standard that you can live up to, but instead gives humanity a standard that demonstrates mans inability, to live up to it. Therefore, lacking the ability to be perfect, man needs the help of someone else in order to acquire salvation.
Humanity is a sinner. Man is imperfect. God is perfect. God can have no relationship with imperfect man. God can have nothing to do with sin.
Man is unable to lift himself out of the realm of sin, because the penalty of sin is death. And not just any death but a total separation away from truth or God.
Since God rules the universe and everything else, then when man is separated from the ruling forces, and since man is incapable of establishing his own rules of sovereignty in this universe, then man is totally helpless and lost to the cosmos that has no rules.
Man cannot invent his own laws of physics, or control anything or any event within the universe. Therefore, in order to be saved, saved from a total separation from God, then man needs the help of someone else. Someone who is capable of paying the price of sin (death), and then come back after defeating death.
That effort requires nothing less than the capability of God Himself.
No man can accomplish this effort. Simply being good will not establish you as a ruler of your own universe. No prophet can accomplish it either. Only God, Jesus Christ, can accomplish the work of salvation.

7 Desiring [thelo] to be [einai] teachers of the law; [nomodidaskalos] [me] understanding [noeo] neither [mete] what [hos] they say, [lego] nor [mete] whereof [peri] [tis] they affirm. [diabebaioomai] KJV-Interlinear
7 wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions. NASB
The four characteristics of the efforts of promoters of false information, is their error, their goal, their motive, and their effect or outcome.
We have now covered the first three characteristics of promoters of false information, their error, their goal, and their motive.
Their information is incorrect, their goal is self-serving, and their concern for others is non-existent.
Which means, as we stated yesterday, simply that their preparation is flawed and lacking in substance, and therefore if their facts are flawed, then their understanding is flawed.
And that brings us to today’s study.
The understanding, ‘noeo,’ of those who promote false information, does not exist. This combination of words, ‘mete,’ means that their lack of understanding is ongoing and perpetual. This means that they are in a continual state of ‘not’ understanding.
That simply means that they do not know what they are talking about.
And that should be rather obvious. If the information, belief, idea, that someone is presenting is false, then it does not exist. If it does not exist than the person promoting the idea, cannot know what they are talking about.
And if they cling to their false beliefs, then they will remain in a state of perpetual ignorance.
But not only that, these false communicators who cling to their false beliefs, actually subscribe wholeheartedly to their false ideas.
They, affirm, ‘diabebaioomai,’ which means to confirm, assert, insist, have established within themselves. Their whole position is false, and yet they cling to something that does not exist. They are holding on to nothing.
And as they insist in their position, then they will refuse with great stubbornness, to even consider their error. They will refuse to examine truth, and they will refuse to examine their own beliefs.
And you are being taught this, because if you ever fade away from the teaching which comes out from the Bible, then you risk becoming just like them. Trapped in your own stubborn beliefs of that which is false.
For scriptures were revealed first to Adam, in the form of the promise of a Savior. Enoch taught salvation and the last days. Noah listened and obeyed. Abraham listened and received the promise of the line of the Savior. Moses recorded the first five books of the Bible, and many prophets and scribes recorded the scriptures over the course of many, many centuries. The apostles and others wrote the content of the New Testament, and John closed the writing of Gods total revelation with the last book by that name.
During those times, and in the centuries following, many false writings have appeared, in an attempt to dilute, destroy, and replace, or even re-write the original texts of the Bible.
And yet the Bible has been tried, tested, attacked, and torn apart by the best that humanity has to offer, and yet it still stands, translated into every language on the planet.
Verified by such documents as Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Alexandrinus, the Ephraemi Rescriptus, the Masoretic Text, Textus Recepticus, many thousands of manuscripts liberated by Marc Antony and delivered to Cleopatra and held in Egyptian libraries, archaeological finds such as the Oxyrhynchos papyri, the Chester Beatty Papyri, the work of Deissmann, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the work of Josephus, the endorsement work of Eusebius, of Tertullian, the Homologogoumena, the Antilegomena, commentary from people who lived in the first century A.D. verifying the authenticity of the New Testament writings such as Clement, Barnabus, Didache, Polycarp the bishop of Smyrna, Papias the bishop of Heirapolis, Justin, Tatian, Ignatius the bishop of Antioch, and a couple of centuries later, the scriptures were again authenticated by men such as Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, and Origen.
The canon of scripture was reviewed and confirmed by the Council of Laodicea, the Council of Damascus, the Council of Carthage, the Council of Hippo, and then there was the document of documents the Muratorian Fragment which dated to the second century and provided a catalog of scriptures further verifying the content and authenticity of the New Testament.
There have been many translations from these original documents, by Caedmon, Aldhelm, Bede, Alfred the Great, Wycliffe, Tyndale, Coverdale and Matthew, and finally the King James version and then the several revisions that have been published since then.
And this is just a few of the many documented examples that authenticate the scriptures.
No other religion has endured or been subjected to such a long standing or vigorous review of their records. And the Bible remains.
But the best source of Biblical authentication comes from Jesus Christ Himself, Lk 11:51, Matt. 23:36, wherein He ties the entire range of the Old Testament scriptures together, ‘From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias.’
All religions, all philosophies, all cults, all beliefs in this world are false. And those who promote them are false.
Only Christianity possesses truth, the source of truth, and the means of communicating truth. And only Christianity is able to withstand the test of time and analysis. No other religion or belief can.

We have covered the first two characteristics of promoters of false information, their error and their goal.
Their information is incorrect and their goal is self-serving. Which means simply that their preparation is flawed and lacking in substance. They are neither interested in truth, nor the facts of truth, but more so how they are viewed by people. The evil man pursues the approval of man, not God. They prefer the accolades of man, not the approval of God, Matt. 23:5-7, 1 Tim. 6:4.
Their front is to present themselves as teachers, to all who lack insight. They present themselves as one who possesses insight, elevating themselves, in their own minds, as authorities of truth, and that all others are lacking and therefore in need of their expertise. Their motivation is opposite of that which it should be. They pursue elite status, rather than servant status, in society.
True instruction requires genuine humility and dedication to truth, the discovery of it, the learning of it, the teaching of it, such that others when they hear truth will learn and grow to their fullest capacity that is available to them.
The instruction of truth means that you are affecting the whole life, both now and for all of eternity, of those who listen to the instructor’s words. If a person enters into the world of instruction with false motivations, then they are cheating others out of an infinite future. And that is a grave, repeat, grave sin.
Communicators of false information, seek leadership roles for their own ego, for their own satisfaction, seeking the prestige, seeking the victory of the argument, seeking their personal sense of power over the lives of others, with no thought as to the repercussions they might have on the lives of others.
And the woods are full of promoters of false doctrine. Whether they are people who are trying to advance their own philosophy, their own religion, their own cult, or their own view point, all who have not been thoroughly prepared, have no place in criticizing anything, much less truth. They have no right in attempting to interfere with or restrain the efforts of others in learning truth.
For if they were prepared, then they would know the error of their position, and correct it. They would know the error of their own motive and they would correct it. They would know the error of the deficiencies of what they promote, and they would correct it.
Promoters of false doctrine depend on lies, deception, and the emotional susceptibility of their listeners.
The world is full of false religion and the false conclusions of philosophies, but what causes more harm to the believing Christian population, is the inadequacies of Christian would be instructors. People who seek titles that impress but serve no purpose in todays world – prophet, prophetess, apostle, and so forth. They lack preparation so they promote salvation and nothing else. They promote emotional gimmicks such as music, Holy Spirit gifts, promises, catch phrases or popular ideas that draw or entice a crowd, but do nothing to advance spiritual growth.
Some of these things are valid applications of worship, such as music, but many are false gimmicks, that serve only as membership drawing cards, and distractions away from real spiritual growth.
The promoters of false religion advance intimidating tactics, threats of rejection if the rules are not followed. They do not address truth, for their position lacks it, so they turn to emotional tactics, vague or ambiguous concepts, invented statistics, concepts that cannot easily be proven, in order to retain their followers. They prevent truth as best they can, from getting to their listeners, because once heard, their followers would turn away from them.
Christianity prevents nothing, but encourages all aspects of investigation. And when objective questioning occurs, then truth stands out and lies reveal themselves.
Objective questioning is a search for truth, not a convenient manipulation so that you can arrive where you want to be. That is a tactic of false prophets, of folks with ulterior motives.
Truth never seeks harm over anyone. That which is false, can only produce harm.

6 From which [hos] some [tis] having swerved [astocheo] have turned aside [ektrepo] unto [eis] vain jangling; [mataiologia] KJV-Interlinear
6 For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, NASB
The four characteristics of the efforts of promoters of false information, is their error, their goal, their motive, and their effect or outcome.
Truth has your best interest in mind. Truth wants you to succeed in life and in eternity. Christianity is the relationship with God, through Christ, who is the source of truth, the infinite resource to support it, and the sovereignty and power to accomplish it.
All other religions, all other philosophies, all other cults, all other beliefs, all other opinions lack these attributes.
Truth is untainted. Truth is pure. Truth is clean. The soul that accumulates truth, has the capacity of assimilating the attributes of truth.
The soul that lacks truth is impure. The soul that lacks truth is unclean. The soul that lacks truth is tainted with the decay and stench of the worst kind of filthy and putridness.
Those who promote false doctrines, are themselves corrupt of soul. They cannot promote truth because they do not have it.
We have seen that the error of false doctrine promoters, is that their facts, their opinions, are based on lies and therefore in error. Their assumption of the knowledge of wisdom is false, therefore their words are false and made up. Anyone who challenges truth, with counter arguments, is deceitful and a liar.
There is only one truth, not many variations of truth. Truth is where facts and reality match up perfectly. Not almost , not sort of, not with exceptions, not because you want things to be a certain way, but perfectly.
Any argument against truth is false, and therefore hypocritical. False information can never complete anything, let alone your life. False information has no substance, no foundation, no structure. Can you construct a building with air?
When anyone turns aside from truth, and promotes false information, then they are doing nothing more than babbling with endless nothingness. Their premise if false, their conclusions are false, their words are empty.
Anyone who desires to win you over with false information, does not have your best interest in mind. They are only thinking of themselves, they are only attempting to build up their own ego at your expense.
Their position lacks reality and therefore they have nothing with which to help you. They cannot help you. They can only mislead you and steer you away from truth, which means that they are taking you away from your only hope of having an effective, full, and complete life.
Promoters of false doctrine, are interested only in their own ego and in their own victory at your expense, 1 Tim. 1:7.
Their goal in life is their advancement in their own mind, and your destruction, or the prevention of your success.

1 Timothy 1:5

5 Now [de] the end [telos] of the commandment [paraggelia] is [esti] charity [agape] out of [ek] a pure [katharos] heart, [kardia] and [kai] of a good [agathos] conscience, [suneidesis] and [kai] of faith [pistis] unfeigned: [anupokritos] KJV-Interlinear
5 But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. NASB
The four aspects of the efforts of false instructors is their error, their goal, their motive, and their effect or outcome.
We covered their error. They have only myths and endless lists which lack truth or substance. Their arguments are made up, invented, and their statistics or views are repetitive, coming from nowhere and going to nowhere.
Now as to their goal. Paul contrasts the goal of the deceivers with the goal of truth.
First as to the goal of truth.
Truth seeks your completion as a human being. That means your body, soul and spirit. The first means of your completion, is your salvation and the certain promise of eternal life. That comes with faith in the Savior, Jesus Christ.
The second means of your completion, is your spiritual growth. This is your learning of doctrine, your living in fellowship, your understanding of what you learn, and finally your using what you learn on a daily basis, in your daily life. That last part creates your spiritual production.
Remember, your works, your efforts according to your standards, are not works according to Gods standards. You can say all of the words, sing all of the right songs, and feel all of the right feelings, but if your life is based on emotions only, then your life is seriously lacking in substance.
Bible doctrine, learned in an academic environment, is the substance and foundation of your spiritual life. And on that, is based the rest of your entire life.
Love, ‘agape,’ is the love of choice, it is the love of substance, not emotion. ‘Agape,’ is the content of the scriptures, which you have to learn, before you can know and use them.
But here it is translated, charity, and charity is the action, or the active use of the principles of life, in life.
Charity which also means giving to those who are in need, is a different type of charity, and not in view here, although it is incorporated because it is a part of the vast array of principles of doctrine that apply to ones life.
This word, ‘agape,’ here refers to the vast array of principles which you need to learn in order to grow up. And that in turn contributes toward the completion of your total life.
This is the goal of truth, to bring your life to its fullest possible point of completion and beyond.
But life is more than just knowledge, it is use and function in ones daily life, with a ‘pure heart.’
The Psalms cover the concept of the pure heart,
"Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place?" Psa. 24:3.
"He who has clean hands and a pure heart," Psa. 24:4.
"Create in me a clean heart, O God," Psa. 51:10.
"Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart!" Psa. 73:1.
And what exactly is a pure heart?
A heart washed by regeneration, Titus 3:5, an obedient heart, Rom 6:17.
The heart is the active function of the soul, symbolically in the soul, as it is a pump within your physical body. The heart represents the circulation (the use) of Bible doctrine in your soul.
And the only people who can possess this pure heart, are those who have been saved (regeneration), and those who live within the fellowship sphere of the spiritual life (obedient). This fellowship concept has been studied in detail within our studies of 1, 2, and 3rd Jn. Perhaps one day you will find the time to go over those studies.
Next is the good conscience. This is the self discipline within you, that keeps you alert as to the status of your spiritual life. It is the self evaluation, moment by moment of your life, monitoring for sin in your life, measuring your thoughts and actions, against that which is right, verses that which is wrong.
Everyone is born with a natural sense of what is right and what is wrong, Rom. 2:14-15. No one has any excuse for not knowing the fundamental difference between right and wrong. When you cross the line you experience guilt, fear, shame, remorse, nervousness, and so forth. So you are always alerted to the fact of your thoughts or actions, Titus 1:15. A good conscience is one who functions in fellowship.
‘And faith, unfeigned.’ The spiritual life cannot be faked with God. You may fake out people, with rhetoric and smiles, but God looks inside of the soul and sees the truth therein, or lack of it.
With truth, your thoughts are pure, your motives are pure, your actions are pure. There is no deceit or attempt to deceive or further your own self at the expense of others. You do not elevate yourself above others, or try to take advantage by dishonest means. You do the best you can with what the world dishes out to you and depend on God for the rest.
If you have to promote yourself at the expense of someone else, then your advancement is not really an honorable advancement.
The goal of truth is to build you up, to make you complete, to separate you and make you autonomous from the constraints of this world. To make you free, secure, prosperous, and contented. That is true happiness, and the underlying result is real meaning and purpose for your life. That is the ultimate goal of truth, for your life.

4 Neither [mede] give heed [prosecho] to fables [muthos] and [kai] endless [aperantos] genealogies, [genealogia] which [hostis] minister [parecho] questions, [zetesis] rather [mallon] than [e] godly [theos] edifying [oikodomia] which [ho] is in [en] faith: [pistis] so do. KJV-Interlinear
4 nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith. NASB
The false teachers, the deceivers, those who will try to confuse and misdirect your life are in error themselves. Their goal is to get you to see things their way. This is a competition to them and nothing more than ego driven rhetoric to win the argument. Their motive is to prevent you from traveling your own course, which is different from theirs. And the effect of their whole agenda is loss to you, if you yield to them.
Satan is the father of lies. Satans policy of evil, is the pattern of lies, intertwined in a complex web of ambiguity and confusion or subtle appeals to the emotions, wherein he can fabricate almost any argument of out of nothing. His goal? To get you to quit your position in truth.
The lies of the world have but one objective, which is to make you lose.
And so Paul teaches us here, that the deceivers, the false prophets of the world will fabricate false arguments, of which their objective is to argue. They are not interested in truth, but in confusion and debate.
You have probably already been confronted by so called atheists, secularists, or those of other religions, who want to debate. But in truth there is no debate, there is nothing to prove. Truth is simply truth. Only in lies is there a need to debate in order to give the lies some sort of respectability.
Endless myths, are simply that, fabricated arguments, fabricated statistics, invented facts, things that are intended to provoke confrontation. They are arguments which describe the bad things of the world, and attempt to prove that God is therefore bad, because people or circumstances are bad. They are a projection of bad things onto God.
Endless genealogies, is a list of names of ancestors, but it is also lists in general of causes and reactions. These lists do not exist and cannot be proven, nor do they carry any weight in truth.
For, the records of the lines of humanity were effectively shut down when Christ was born. This cancels religious attempts to destroy Christianity by creating lineage after the time of Christ. No sons or daughters of Jesus. No lineage for other religions such as Islam, to justify themselves. No lineage to create a super or elite class of people.
In other words, all arguments of false teaching are an attempt to give man credit for his own efforts, thus cancelling out the work of Christ as the basis for salvation.
There are only two categories into which all theology or philosophies fit. The first is salvation by faith through the work of Christ. And the second category which includes atheists, is salvation or a better view of life, by means of mans cognizance or effort.
Today, we know more about the makeup of this universe, than ever before. We are still learning, and even those who are actively engaged in the science of discovery, do not have all of the answers. And yet, you will come into contact with those who are not scientists, who are not graduates with degrees, who are not actively participating in some science, but who seem to have all of the answers, even of life beyond this one.
Their courage comes from behind a keyboard, hidden behind an internet, and armed with arguments that have no means of proof or verification. But they are impressed with their own arguments and presume that you are impressed with their words as well.
Their intent is not to provide you with a better life, but only to defeat you in the argument. In either case they lose, and they could care less about what the outcome is for your life.
Christianity does not try to destroy. Christianity does not seek out argument for arguments sake. Christianity cares a great deal about your future, for when you win, then everyone is better off.
Christianity has but one objective, to build you up to a point of completion and total success. Paul calls this edifying, ‘oikodomia,’ which means to build, to complete, a building, a dwelling, a home that is fully ready to live within.
The purpose of Christianity is not to promote the instructor, not to allow an instructor restrictive control over those who he teaches, not to entertain, not to promote life through emotion only, but to promote growth through substance.
You have to eat, if you are to grow and remain healthy.
If you sing and say the right things only to exercise your emotions, recite endless clichés or slang in order to create an identity for yourself, that is no different than standing outside of a great restaurant and smelling the aroma only. You cannot live on the smells only.
Your life depends on the construction and completion of your soul, and that requires material, real building material, which is Bible doctrine.
Myths and endless lists may be impressive, but they are in fact, nothing.

3 As [kathos] I besought [parakaleo] thee [se] to abide still [prosmeno] at [en] Ephesus, [Ephesos] when I went [poreuomai] into [eis] Macedonia, [Makedonia] that [hina] thou mightest charge [paraggello] some [tis] that they teach [heterodidaskaleo] no [me] other doctrine, [heterodidaskaleo] KJV-Interlinear
3 As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus, in order that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines, NASB
Paul had been in Ephesus with Timothy, and had moved on to another city. During his stay in Ephesus, certain men engaged in the practice of false teaching, and this is the subject with which Timothy is left to deal with.
A couple of men, mentioned in verse twenty of this chapter, were probably leaders or at least examples of this false teaching effort, but in any case, Timothy was to confront and end as best he could, the false teachings that were being spread.
Paul will elude to four broad categories of false teaching – their error, motives, goals and effect, on people who listen to them.
But in any case, remember one important principle, Gods teaching is truth, and the false teachings of men are from no other source but Satan, who is the father of lies, Jn 8:44. Only lies come from Satan, and nothing else.
Truth may always be determined as it always stands out and holds up under scrutiny.
Lies have nothing to stand on, and therefore eventually collapse under their own argument.
And one of the most dangerous areas in history will occur in the end times when liars and deceivers will become thick as thieves, so to speak, Matt. 5:17, 24:11, 24.
The false prophets will use smooth words, smooth logic, smart arguments, even arguments that appeal to the emotions, but their facts are invented and never substantiated, and they are forced to use ambiguity since their reality does not exist.
False prophets are only successful when confronting people who lack doctrine in their souls. They stand up against a weaker opponent, as a bully confronts a little guy. Against truth, they cannot stand.
False prophets are not restricted to theology only. The biggest crowd of distributers of falsities comes from the secular side of society – media, government, celebrities, social norms and standards, popular opinion, and so forth.
It is against this barrage that people who are spiritually deficient, will be vulnerable. And those who lack doctrine, will never know that they have been deceived, unless they put the argument to the test, which most do not.
Your only defense and protection against the falsities of life, is truth. But you cannot use truth unless you know it. And you cannot know it unless you study it every day of your life. Bible doctrine is the food for the soul, and food is to be eaten every day, lest you starve.
How often do you eat?

1 Timothy 1:2

2 Unto Timothy, [Timotheos] my own [gnesios] son [teknon] in [en] the faith: [pistis] Grace, [charis] mercy, [eleos] and peace, [eirene] from [apo] God [theos] our [hemon] Father [pater] and [kai] Jesus [Iesous] Christ [Christos] our [hemon] Lord. [kurios] KJV-Interlinear
2 to Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. NASB
This letter is written to Timothy. Timothy means ‘dear to God,’ or ‘one who honors God.’ By this attribute and through Pauls personal descriptions, we can know that Timothy was a very devout and well prepared man.
Child, ‘gnesios,’ means a legitimate child born to parents that are married, as opposed to a child that is illegitimate.
‘In faith,’ is a term representative of the whole of Christian doctrine.
Therefore by this reference, we know that Timothy was born into faith, and has grown up in his spiritual life in a legitimate fashion. Most probably his recent education came, in recent times, through the teaching from Paul.
However, we do know that Timothy’s parents had a hand in his upbringing, and that Timothy was raised from his youth, by the scriptures of the Old Testament, 2 Tim 3:15. Remember that at this time in history, the New Testament, as we know it, did not exist.
In any case, Timothy was a well prepared man, because of his legitimate studies of the scriptures, and not from illegitimate sources or from a lazy attitude toward the scriptures, or from empty pursuits of superficial phrases and such.
Grace, mercy and peace, sum up the totality of Gods plan for every human being.
The plan began with Gods grace, which is Gods favor. This is the sense of Gods kindness, generosity, compassion, pleasing manner, contentment, or benevolence, all of which point toward the ultimate prosperity and completeness toward the recipient.
Mercy, is Gods grace in action. Words of kindness are nothing if they are not followed by action. And Gods mercy represents the sum total of His provision, both in time and in eternity. And as we can look into the night sky and see the vastness of the universe before us, which was all created as the environment for our life and for our history, then this represents the magnitude of Gods provision for each one of us individually. This is how important you are to God.
And peace, is the ultimate goal of the completion of ones life. Peace is the fullness of ones growth, understanding, wisdom, security, meaning and purpose, prosperity, and happiness. The completion in every sense of the word, of your life.
The ultimate goal of a persons life does not, repeat, does not, come through wishing or hoping, by singing songs or reading pleasant verses. It comes to you through work, spiritual work. And that comes to you through a daily study of the Bible, by academic preparation, and by no other means.
In contrast, the ultimate lazy person, the illegitimate person, is one who will not pursue doctrine in a legitimate fashion. That is a four letter word, ‘work.’ It is far easier to sit back and do nothing, except that which you want to do, things that exclude a daily commitment to a study.
The legitimate pursuit makes you a legitimate child. The lazy pursuit makes you the bastard or illegitimate child. The legitimate child is the recipient of Gods favor, the illegitimate child is not.
And note here, that we are contrasting not believer and unbeliever, but legitimate believer verses the illegitimate believer. The one who pursues their spiritual life in the correct fashion, verses the one who pursues their emotions, or good feelings, or other path of their own design, but yet calls themselves spiritual, when they are not.
From God the Father, and Christ, both persons mentioned link this policy and plan to its only legitimate source, God, as well as linking both members of the Godhead, as co-equal. Jesus Christ is God.
God the Father is the father to all of creation in that it was His plan that governs all of creation, Acts 17:28-29. And he is the Father to all believers who have been adopted into His family, Matt 5:45, 1 Peter 1:3, 1 John 5:1, 3:1-2.
Jesus Christ is the source and procurer of peace, Luke 2:14, 19:38, 42, John 14:27, 16:33, Acts 10:36, Rom 5:1, Eph 2:17. The Father provided for it in the original plan, and Christ secures it through His work and through doctrine.
And you receive it by means of your legitimate pursuit of doctrine within the environment of your spiritual life.
And so we close yet another year, with our collective celebration on this Thanksgiving holiday. We celebrated ours a bit early as the boys were back on leave a week ago, but have now re-deployed into Iraq and Afghanistan respectively. We are thankful for the many things that we have received in our life, and we are exceptionally thankful to all of you, who have faithfully supported this study over these many years, that has allowed me to write and provide it to folks around the world, so that they will have an opportunity in completing their lives, by Gods grace.
And now to Him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of His glory, with exceeding joy. To the only wise God, even Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both before time, now and forever. Amen.

Amen.
