Romans 4:16

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Romans 4:16

16 Therefore [dia] [touto] it is of [ek] faith [pistis], that [hina] it might be by [kata] grace [charis]; to the end [eis] the promise [epaggelia] might be [einai] sure [bebaios] to all [pas] the seed [sperma]; not [ou] to that only [monon] which is of [ek] the law [nomos], but [alla] to that also [kai] which is of [ek] the faith [pistis] of Abraham [Abraam]; who [hos] is [esti] the father [pater] of us [hemon] all [pas],   KJV-Interlinear

16 That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,  ESV

And so Paul makes his conclusion that faith alone serves as the main and only valid mechanism of salvation.  That opens the way for Gods favor or grace.  For if salvation depended on mans works or effort, then it would be based on the merits of human effort, and not on Gods effort.

However, man is incapable of doing what it takes to pay the price of sin.  Man is incapable of conquering death.  Man is incapable of controlling his immediate environment, much less the universe.

Therefore we are all dependent on God and on Gods plan, which is Jesus Christ, securing our eternal life by means of His effort, which He alone could do.

And that opens up the door of salvation to all of humanity, not just to those who had custody of the scriptures, or the Law, namely the Israelites, but it is open to all of humanity, because salvation depends on Christ, not man.

Lest the Jews would claim ownership and exclusivity of Gods plan, and then come up with all manner of works, requiring adherence to their wishes, rather than Gods.  Which they did through Judaism.

So, God the Father, planed the plan, Christ carried out the plan, and the Holy Spirit preserves and communicates the plan, making the plan of salvation fair and available to all.

With man in charge then people become excluded.

With God in charge, no one is excluded.

Abraham set the pattern of faith, and when we follow in that pattern, then he becomes our father because of that pattern.

Isaiah 29:3

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 29:3

3 And I will camp [chanah] against thee round about [duwr], and will lay siege [tsuwr] against thee with a mount [mutstsab], and I will raise [quwm] forts [m@tsuwrah] against thee.   KJV-Interlinear

3 And I will encamp against you all around, and will besiege you with towers and I will raise siegeworks against you.   ESV

This sets the stage for the most dramatic series of events that will occur in all of human history.  In those final days of history, in the last half of the seven year Tribulation, Jerusalem will be surrounded by the enemies of the entire world.  The battlefield will run for hundreds of miles, and the combatants will number in the tens of millions if not in greater numbers.  Bodies will pile up as high as the horses bridle and Jerusalem will be at the very center of the worst bombardment in all of human history.

And yet, miraculously, and although God is applying severe discipline against Jerusalem’s occupants, the city will hold out against huge armies that have all of the implements and resources of the most modern warfare, of that future time.

They will not hold out by means of their own efforts, but they will survive only because God protects them, even while applying harsh punishment against them.

This is the verse of the prophecy of when Jerusalem is surrounded.

We have already studied in Isaiah, that the main camp headquarters of the enemy force will be just to the northeast of the city of Jerusalem.  And we know that someone in the city will either read the passage or they will remember it and that will give them an edge for a counter assault against their enemies.

But that is not a part of our current passage.

Jerusalem will be surrounded and hammered because of unbelief.  And it will not be a pretty nor a short lived battle, but will continue for some time.

And, the picture being presented here, is one of extreme hopelessness and helplessness.  The entire world is against Jerusalem.  Satan is against Jerusalem. Gods has promised to rescue and deliver those occupants of Jerusalem, who survive, and God guarantees that there will not only be survivors, but many survivors. This does not negate the huge death toll that will occur.

So, all of these things culminate around and in Jerusalem, as Satan is trying his very best to prevent God from keeping His promise of deliverance, by destroying the entire city and its occupants.

This sets the stage for the most dramatic series of events that will occur in all of human history.

Isaiah 29:2

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 29:2

2 Yet I will distress [tsuwq] Ariel ['Ari'el], and there shall be heaviness [ta'aniyah] and sorrow ['aniyah]: and it shall be unto me as Ariel ['Ari'el].   KJV-Interlinear

2 Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be moaning and lamentation, and she shall be to me like an Ariel.   ESV

All who play games with their spiritual life, all who refuse to hear Gods commands and refuse to learn doctrine, all who have the presumptuousness that their own wisdom is better than what they can learn, then there is distress waiting just around the chronological corner for them.  If the warnings are not enough to frighten you into a daily study, a fear that you will have control over, then one day you will be more than frightened and it will be beyond your control.

And here we have the warning against Jerusalem from Isaiah’s day, against Jerusalem in the final days of the Tribulation, and against you or anyone throughout history, who follows this same example of spiritual indifference, neglect, and dysfunction.

Again, the word Ariel refers to the alter, upon which the sacrifices were finally burned.

Just a quick review of the animal sacrifices.  The animal was led to the alter, tied to it, its throat was cut so it bled to death.  Then it was cut up into pieces. Each piece was examined to make sure that the animal was unblemished and without defect of any kind, both on the outside and the inside.

These things represented the qualification of Jesus as the unblemished perfect sacrificial candidate.

Then the animal parts were burned, representing the judgment of God against the sins of the world.  The smoke rose heavenward and represent the pleasing and acceptable work that was the sacrifice and its purpose.  Later the priests would eat some of the burned parts representing their acknowledgment of Gods work and their belief in it.

Now, there is a lot more to that, but you get the idea.

The alter, was a place of violence, extreme violence, where the animal was helpless, killed and butchered, and burned.

And so, it comes to people who disregard God, Christ, doctrine, truth, and their responsibilities in their spiritual life.  And especially people who put forward a false show for the public ears or eyes, but their inner beliefs are far from their actions.  They talk a lot, and do less than nothing.

And so their lives become the alter upon which God will direct His wrath against them.

First, Israel has rejected Christ.  Israel has rejected Gods plan.  Israel has installed their own ideas as to what God has or had in mind.  They go through the rituals, or through the motions, but learn nothing, because they are not interested in Gods truth. They are only interested in their public image in society.

And so judgment day arrives, sooner or later, in each individual’s life. And if this is you, then the fears of this happening to you, should be enough to make you concerned, and then lead you to make changes in your life.  Namely getting into a daily study, so you can learn and eventually see straight in life.

But in the final days of history, this will occur on a larger scale. Jerusalem will be surrounded and the city will become one great alter.  Namely there will be so much terror, death and destruction, that all of the atrocities of history will be like childs play.

And this is not just a possibility, but it clearly states, ‘it shall be.’

People will be indifferent, will ignore all of the warning signs, will not take any of this seriously, will continue in life in their daily habitual patterns of life, and then it will all come crashing down around them.  And like the sacrificial animal, they will be helpless, hopeless and without any control over what happens to them.

This is something that you should not want happening to you.  And, you can avoid it, by simply getting with a daily study and listening, paying attention, and learning.

Isaiah 29:1

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 29:1

1 Woe [howy] to Ariel ['Ari'el], to Ariel ['Ari'el], the city [qiryah] where David [David] dwelt [chanah]! add [caphah] ye year [shaneh (in pl. only),] to year [shaneh (in pl. only),]; let them kill [naqaph] sacrifices [chag].   KJV-Interlinear

1 Ah, Ariel, Ariel, the city where David encamped! Add year to year; let the feasts run their round.   ESV

When Christianity become a ritual habit, and has lost its meaning, then no spiritual benefit comes to the individual who pretends or lives their life in some sort of delusion.  And this occurs when people do not listen or make any attempt to learn, and therefore do not learn the basics of that which is expected of them.  Generally they do not learn because they are not interested in learning.  And that leads to what is in this verse.

Woe, is a reference to distress or alarm, in the extreme.  Ariel is a substitute name for Jerusalem, referring to the sacrifices.  It means alter or hearth, where the sacrificial offerings are burned, symbolizing Gods wrath of divine judgment on sin.  This is the principle taught of Christ on the Cross when God sent punishment against sin, onto Him.

But here, the sacrifices have become routine ritual and have lost their meaning.  They are done out of habit and the principles that the sacrifices teach, are not learned.

People then begin to believe that whatever it is that they do, is correct, and that all they need do is continue in their ways of pretense.

Year after year, refers to this continued habit, which is a useless and senseless habit, which is a worthless and empty habit.

And the only thing worse than the person who does not learn doctrine, is the person who adopts habits that are phony and false, yet believes that they are useful, and continues doing day after day, year after year, in a habit that is totally wrong.

And that is a quintessence of a wasted life.

They do not learn correctly, because they are not interested in learning.  They adopt wrong habits and patterns of life, and continue in them, all the while wasting their entire life.  And, they never realize it, until their life is over.

And the sad thing is, that they always have the opportunity to turn their life around because doctrine and teaching is readily available, but they simply ignore it.

Psalm 37:6

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Psalm 37:6

6 And he shall bring forth [yatsa'] thy righteousness [tsedeq] as the light ['owr], and thy judgment [mishpat] as the noonday [tsohar].   KJV-Interlinear

6 He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.   ESV

There are only two worlds.  The spiritual unseen world, and the carnal seen world which is all around you. The seen world has a trap on your life and the only way out of that trap is to learn Bible doctrine, and then discover how to escape the traps of the world.  Indifference, pretense, or refusal to learn Bible doctrine leaves you in the trap, and eventually you will never realize that you are trapped, until God calls you out of this world and then it is too late to correct your life.

This is the devils world.  It is run by cosmos diabolicus, which is the policy of evil. It is filled with crime, enticements, distractions, compromise, seemingly reasonable philosophies, and everything imaginable designed to keep you from God, from Christ, from Bible doctrine, from truth, and from fulfilling your life.  Remaining under the rules of the world, means remaining empty and having an incomplete and unfulfilled life.

Learning Bible doctrine, which is merely listening or reading the instruction of the Bible, is your ticket out of the clutches of the world and your freedom into seeing what realities really are, and what phenomenal potential you really have for a life that is far, far more than the world could ever offer.

In the meantime, the world looks awfully like the tables are turned in favor of a wicked and unbelieving society.  But God reminds us to fret not over the successes of the wicked, and especially not to imitate wickedness just so as to get some of the good life that the world dangles in front of us all.

And why?

Because, what God has planned for you, both now and in eternity, is infinitely far greater than anything you could ever accomplish in this world in a thousand lives.

When you were saved, God imputed into you, His righteousness and His justice.  Both together make up holiness. And holiness is a separation from the world, and joining with God through Christ.

In that plan, of Gods, which He has specifically for each believer, is a destiny beyond everything you can imagine. And even though the world seems to have the upper hand most of the time, it does not. The world has nothing, and all that it has is temporary at best.

So, pursuing the world, gains you nothing in the long run, and only temporary things in the short run.  Temporary things that will never build, never fulfill, never satisfy.

And Gods promise here, is that your spiritual life, that you are building up now, assuming that you are pursuing your daily studies, will pay off big time, when eternity arrives.  The light of the noonday, is a reference to the brightest of the bright.  And it is seen by all.  And that is your eventual vindication and reward.  It is certain, and phenomenal, and very public.  All will see your passion and dedication and the results that come to you.

And for those who do not hear or give an ear to this counsel of God, there will be great embarrassment and nothing beyond that.

The opportunity it here and is now.  You just have to decide if you are going to be smart or stupid.
