Romans 2:28

Copyright Ó 2014 J. Neely
Romans 2:28

28 For [gar] he is [esti] not [ou] a Jew [Ioudaios], which is one outwardly [en] [phaneros]; neither [oude] is that circumcision [peritome], which is outward [en] [phaneros] in [en] the flesh [sarx]:    KJV-Interlinear

28 For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical.    ESV

The words for Jew, Israelite and Hebrew, were all used interchangeably, back in Pauls day.  And even though they all have different origins and meanings, to be referred to as Jewish, represented the heritage of the culture and race, that dated back to Abraham.

Abraham was the first to cross over the river from the land of Ur, to the land of Canaan.  He was then referred to as a Hebrew, or one who crossed over the river, or one on the other side of the river.  This all began with the faith of Abraham, and continued through his son Isaac, and then Jacob, which is the line of faith, not simply genetics.  Abraham and Isaac both had several children, but the line of faith went only through to Jacob, and then to his twelve sons.

Abraham turned away from the idols of his fathers and headed to Canaan in search of, and in obedience to, God.

Later, when his grandson, Jacob had his twelve sons, Jacobs name was changed to Israel, meaning, may God prevail, He struggles with God, God perseveres, contends.

The nation of Israel came out of Jacobs new name, Israel and of course the people came to be known as Israelites.

Through the centuries, and following King Solomon's time, the nation split into two nations, the northern kingdom generally called Israel or Samaria, and the southern kingdom which retained its tribe name, Judah.

The northern kingdom split away from the dynasty of David and attempted to invent its own dynasty.  That kingdom was eventually destroyed.  It was a false path, which was not of Gods plan.

Judah eventually became known as Judea and thus the term Jew evolved as the name for those who lived in Judea.

The religion of Judaism followed the Mosaic Law, claimed it as their one true religion and developed most of the additional rules that were incorporated into the Levitical Priesthood.  This was a religion of works, or trying to keep the Law, and they drifted away from the true Messiah and its intent, looking for a leader and king, rather than looking for a savior.

They held onto the rituals, including the ritual of circumcision for their new born male infants.

But after Christ, then the Christian segment of the religion became confused and tried to incorporate the Mosaic Law and its rituals into the new faith in Christ, demanding that any gentile abide by the Law, as they implied that they were.

This is the misapplication of faith and salvation, that Paul is addressing in these verses.

Salvation is by faith, not by some physical act.

Becoming a member of the family of God, is more than merely being a descendant of Abraham.  Abraham had many sons, but only one believed while the others did not.

Circumcision was to represent the cutting away of the sins from the individual, and thus was a spiritual cutting away, as the dead skin is cut away on the male genitals.  Physical circumcision was symbolic of the spiritual principle.

True circumcision is the inward cutting away of sin from the life of the believer, through faith.

A physical circumcision is the outward only and does nothing for the spiritual life.

Romans 2:27

Romans 2:27

27 And [kai] shall not [krino] uncircumcision [akrobustia] which is by [ek] nature [phusis], if it fulfil [teleo] the law [nomos], judge [krino] thee [se], who by [dia] the letter [gramma] and [kai] circumcision [peritome] dost transgress [parabates] the law [nomos]?   KJV-Interlinear

27 Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law.   ESV

A right thing when done in a wrong way, is wrong.  Circumcision is more than just a surgical procedure. It is the symbolism of faith through obedience to the promise of God, when that promise was given by God to Abraham, which Abraham believed, which in turn was long before Abraham was ordered to circumcise himself.

That obedience was in relation to Gods promise of a savior.

Therefore, circumcision teaches faith for salvation.  Circumcision merely reflects the existence of that faith.

When circumcision is used in place of faith and faith is not used, then the circumcision is useless and of no spiritual value.  This is a disobedience to the purpose of circumcision.

All of mans works or efforts, are useless, when they are used in place of Gods process, and they are in violation of Gods intended purpose.

God has a plan.  That plan is clear and simple and understandable.  It likewise forbids anything that man can do, as a substitute for Gods plan and purpose.

God demands faith for salvation.  God demands instruction for spiritual growth. God demands confession for admission into His presence.  There is nothing in this process that allows mans efforts to substitute for Gods defined procedures.

Therefore, when a person, a gentile, follows the promise and purpose of Gods plan, even though he does not have a physical circumcision or follow any other ritual act common to the Mosaic Law, then he is in compliance with Gods intent.

When a Jew, or anyone, who follows the Law to the letter, but excludes faith, then he is not in compliance with Gods intent.

Truth is compliance with Gods plan and purpose and procedure.  Truth stands out and condemns all that is false and all that is not in compliance.

Therefore, if you try to do spiritual things in a non-spiritual way, then you are condemned.   A right thing when done in a wrong way, is wrong.

Isaiah 25:2

Copyright Ó 2014 J. Neely
Isaiah 25:2

2 For thou hast made [suwm] of a city [`iyr] an heap [gal]; of a defenced [batsar] city [qiryah] a ruin [mappalah]: a palace ['armown] of strangers [zuwr] to be no city [`iyr]; it shall never [`owlam] be built [banah].   KJV-Interlinear

2 For you have made the city a heap, the fortified city a ruin; the foreigners’ palace is a city no more; it will never be rebuilt.    ESV

The destruction of human tyranny clears the way for the glorification of God and the vindication of truth over the lies and false opinions and corruptions of evil.

A city, is a generic term not referring to any single city but to all cities.

They are the pride of human construction, symbols of human ingenuity and wealth and culture, the palaces of strangers or foreigners, or those set apart from God, and yet their destiny is destruction.

The end result is that they will all be destroyed in a very short time, and then they will never rise again.

What will remain is God and truth and Gods plan, for all who have looked to God, in obedience to His principles and mandates and plan, resulting in the completion of themselves as people, and in the fulfilment of their lives if they pursue Gods plan for themselves, as God has always intended.

To pursue your own agenda, is to pursue a dead end.

To ignore Gods mandates, is to ignore truth and life's opportunities.

To remain neither hot nor cold, but somewhere in the middle, is to be wrapped up in ones own delusion of self-advancement, resulting in neither coming or going anywhere in life.

The one and only way to succeed in life is to end your own direction, and knuckle down to a daily study and be taught and learn and advance as God intends.

Isaiah 25:1

Copyright Ó 2014 J. Neely
Isaiah 25:1

1 O LORD [Yahovah], thou art my God ['elohiym]; I will exalt [ruwm] thee, I will praise [yadah] thy name [shem]; for thou hast done [`asah] wonderful [pele'] things; thy counsels [`etsah] of old [rachowq] are faithfulness ['emuwnah] and truth ['omen].   KJV-Interlinear

1 O LORD, you are my God; I  will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure.   ESV

Even though humanity has and will make his own destiny into a heap of dismal and destructive ends, it is Gods plan, that was made long, long ago, that has never changed and that has sought the very best for humanity.

Gods plan is for the entire world, for the entire human race.

God desires that all should be saved and that all should advance to their fullest spiritual capacity.

But it is man, or each individual that prevents these desires from becoming a reality.

Many refuse to believe in Christ.

Many refuse to engage in a daily study, in order to learn, in order to grow up, in order to advance in their spiritual life and existence.

These failures cannot be ascribed to God, when man refuses.

Gods plan was established in eternity past.  And even though the world will come to a very dramatic and horrible end, it is still Gods plan that is both personal and vast to care for the needs of the individual as well as the design for the entire human race through all generations.

God created a perfect universe, designed for habitation.  Satan ruined it.

God created a perfect Garden, designed for mans wonderful life.  Man ruined it.

Name one thing that Satan has done that is beneficial for all.

Name one thing that man had done for all.

Sin has destroyed and sin will always destroy.

Arrogance prevents advancement and completion of oneself. And yet it is each person, never God, who hinders Gods plan for themselves.

To praise God, to worship God, to exalt God, requires a dedication to ones daily study as God mandates and expects.  To do otherwise, is disobedience to God as well as a huge disregard for His plan, and a huge adherence for ones own designs in life.

Isaiah 24:23

Copyright Ó 2014 J. Neely
Isaiah 24:23

23 Then the moon [labanah] shall be confounded [chapher], and the sun [chammah] ashamed [buwsh], when the LORD [Yahovah] of hosts [tsaba'] shall reign [malak] in mount [har] Zion [Tsiyown], and in Jerusalem [Yaruwshalaim], and before his ancients [zaqen] gloriously [kabowd].  KJV-Interlinear

23 Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders.   ESV

To be an elder one must commit himself/herself to a lifetime of learning Bible doctrine, which is more than simply reading verses, but requires in depth instruction, learning and the study of truth.

A fitting contrast and conclusion for this chapter.  Whereas man sees himself as the sun and moon and even stars, in all their glory, projecting himself in that same glory, but in fact man is without glory of his own, and on his own will end up in total destruction.

And then there is God who uses a mountain, and a rather small mountain at that, and a city, to represent the vastness of His essence and truth, which by the way are more vast than the universe and heaven combined.

And God will endure, while unbelieving and arrogant man will not.

The sun and moon are often used as symbols to describe the attitudes of rulers and celebrities and others that see themselves as more than they really are.

They will be confounded, embarrassed, exposed for what they really are, namely nothing.

Gods mountain, called Zion, represents the dwelling of God, which is truth or the vast content of Bible doctrine.

Zion or doctrine, resides in the city of Jerusalem, called the City of Peace.  Doctrine resident in the city produces peace and that represents doctrine resident inside of the soul of the believer, likewise producing peace.

The believer, who studies and learns and understands and comprehends Bible doctrine, is therefore a resident of Jerusalem or peace, dwelling inside of Gods peace due to the Bible doctrine within them.

The elders are the true wise ones, so designated by anyone who has learned doctrine and has therefore advanced to spiritual maturity.

Bible doctrine has withstood the test of time since before time.

Bible doctrine resident in the souls of believers since the beginning of humanity, has produced many that are wise, and therefore many that are elders.  Those who are knowledgeable of truth.

To be an elder, one must learn bible doctrine.

To be an elder one must commit himself to a lifetime of learning Bible doctrine, which is more than simply reading verses, but requires in depth instruction, learning and study of truth.

To be an elder one must commit himself to the daily use and therefore production within ones life.

To be an elder one must advance to spiritual maturity and to the completion of ones self, as God has defined being complete.
