20 Blessed ['esher] are ye that sow [zara`] beside all waters [mayim], that send forth [shalach] thither the feet [regel] of the ox [showr] and the ass [chamowr].   KJV-Interlinear

20 Happy are you who sow beside all waters, who let the feet of the ox and the donkey range free. ESV

This final verse shows the dramatic difference between the destruction that will occur when people are indifferent or antagonistic towards God and Christ and truth, versus the phenomenal blessings that will occur when people pursue, seek out, and embrace the learning of Bible doctrine.

The actual historical occurrence of these events will take place at the end of the tribulation, when there will be huge destruction and desolation such that only thorns and briars will grow and will spread out over the entire land, and then this will be followed by the second advent of Christ, and when His reign begins, then all of the destruction will be immediately transformed into phenomenal blessings.

The still waters, describes the peace and prosperity that will result from rich and fertile soil, and the removal of all difficulties of life.

The livestock will be able to roam and graze freely without the need for fences or confinement of any kind, and will not be in danger of being lost or stolen.

In short, this chapter points out, that all of the blessings imaginable are readily available now, however because people are indifferent, and have a tendency toward sin rather than toward the spiritual resources of life, then human history is going to run its course right up until and through the tribulation, and therefore headlong into the dramatic destruction of nearly the entire human race.

And people bring all of this destruction onto themselves.

It will not be until humanity brings itself to near extinction, and Jesus Christ dramatically rescues humanity from itself, that then the blessings will pour out from heaven.

In each persons individual life, the drama of destruction is avoidable. All one has to do is to want Bible doctrine, to seek it out, to pursue it, to learn Bible doctrine, and to advance in their spiritual life, as God intends for each one of us to do.

On an individual basis, the blessed life is certainly doable.

But as far as society and human history are concerned, the tribulation and self-destruction of humanity are inevitable.

rightly dividing [learning, understanding, discerning]

Isaiah 32:19

19 When it shall hail [barad], coming down [yarad] on the forest [ya`ar]; and the city [`iyr] shall be low [shaphel] in a low place [shiphlah].   KJV-Interlinear

19 And it will hail when the forest falls down, and the city will be utterly laid low. ESV

When there is stubborn resistance toward pursuing and seeking out Bible instruction, two things must first happen before blessing is poured out.

The city being brought low, refers to the humiliation that must first be imposed in order to bring the pride of disobedience to a state of humility.

Hail coming down on the forest, refers to God’s judgment. And using this figure of speech, the forest is a place where people do not assemble, but is also a reference to the enemies of God, and therefore the enemies of God’s people, which enemies who are numerous and vast.

When God’s people, who are believers in Christ, are reluctant to seek out and pursue His word, and therefore by default are reluctant to abide by His mandates, then God applies discipline in order to cure their indifferent arrogance.

God’s judgment, which typically is greater than Gods discipline, is redirected away from His people, and directed toward their enemies.

Therefore, God destroys the enemies of truth in order to destroy evil, God disciplines His people in order to destroy arrogance, and only then will blessings flow to God’s people.

Isaiah 32:18

18 And my people [`am] shall dwell [yashab] in a peaceable [shalowm] habitation [naveh], and in sure [mibtach] dwellings [mishkan], and in quiet [sha'anan] resting places [manuwchah];   KJV-Interlinear

18 My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places. ESV

Just as the previous verse described the attributes of spiritual maturity, so too, this verse describes the dwelling and structure of spiritual maturity.

The dwellings of this world, whether in the past, whether now, or whether in the future, are only temporary at best.

The dwelling structure of the soul is permanent and eternal.

The habitation of the soul, is the structure which Bible doctrine creates within the soul.

Bible doctrine is the building material for the spiritual construction of the structure of the soul.

Often times we call this our temple, our fortress, our mansion, all of which complete our essence of soul, by means of our learning Bible doctrine.

Bible doctrine learned, completes the structure of our soul, which leads to the most perfect and permanent dwelling place of safety, of security, of happiness, and these last forever.

Without Bible doctrine, you have none of these.

The perfect life can only be attained by learning Bible doctrine on a consistent and daily basis.

17 And the work [ma`aseh] of righteousness [tsadaqah] shall be peace [shalowm]; and the effect [`abodah] of righteousness [tsadaqah] quietness [shaqat] and assurance [betach] for [`ad] ever [`owlam].   KJV-Interlinear

17 And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. ESV

Righteousness is that which is right according to God and truth. Righteousness is the content of truth, and the application of the content of truth. Righteousness has nothing to do with human viewpoint, with human attitude, or human arrogance.

Righteousness ultimately produces peace.  Peace is the result of righteousness.

Peace is the status of a relaxed mental attitude, which is caused by the intake of Bible doctrine into the soul, as a result of a daily Bible study, learned from instruction.

The effect, or the ministering, or the process of righteousness within the soul is the quietness or stillness of the soul, free from the stresses and anxieties of life.

The effect, is also the assurance, or the place of peace and refuge and assurance and safety and security and confidence.

We typically sum all of these attributes up as spiritual maturity.

And since these are qualities within, and an integral part of, the soul, and the soul having eternal life because of faith in Christ, then that status of spiritual maturity, which includes all of the spiritual resources just listed, and far more, are likewise eternal.

Anything and everything of this world, is temporary at best.

Anything and everything resulting from Bible doctrine learned and inculcated into the soul, is permanent and eternal.

16 Then judgment [mishpat] shall dwell [shakan] in the wilderness [midbar], and righteousness [tsadaqah] remain [yashab] in the fruitful field [karmel].   KJV-Interlinear

16 Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness abide in the fruitful field. ESV

The restoration of the earth flows from the Holy Spirit, who is God. God is perfect justice and perfect righteousness. God is truth.

Therefore, the blessings and prosperity derived from the earth come from God, come from truth, come from righteousness and justice.

Blessings and prosperity, in themselves are not the answer or solution for man, and they are not an end or an answer to mans problems.

Typically, blessings and prosperity, result in man’s drifting away from truth, and therefore end in disaster.

But when Christ returns, and as a result justice and righteousness are applied against the evils of the world, at the second advent, then and only then blessings and prosperity will resume, and will exist within the framework of Gods truth, and Gods justice, and Gods righteousness.

Without Christ, without doctrine, without God in your life, then whatever semblance of blessing and prosperity that you have, will result in your misery and doom.

With Christ, and with doctrine, and therefore with God in your life, then whatever real blessing and prosperity that you have, will result in expanded happiness, because of the framework of Bible doctrine which you have learned, and that is in your soul.

Isaiah 32:15

15 Until the spirit [ruwach] be poured [`arah] upon us from on high [marowm], and the wilderness [midbar] be a fruitful field [karmel], and the fruitful field [karmel] be counted [chashab] for a forest [ya`ar].   KJV-Interlinear

15 until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a forest. ESV

The spirit, is a reference to the spirit of God, often times referred to as the Holy Ghost, or in more modern times referred to as the Holy Spirit. This is a reference to the third person of the Trinity.

With the world in desolation, at the end of the tribulation, the second advent of Christ will occur, and shortly thereafter the millennial reign of Christ will begin.

At the beginning of this reign, and almost immediately there will be a universal pouring out of the Holy Spirit upon the earth.

Just as when the earth was made null and void by the destruction caused by Satan, way back before Adam, and the Holy Spirit moved over the face of the earth and began its restoration in preparation for the human race, so too, at the second advent of Christ, the Holy Spirit will pour out across the face of the earth and begin an almost instantaneous restoration, from the destruction that has been caused by the tribulation.

The spirit from on high, is a reference to heaven.

The earth will not heal itself. Man cannot heal the earth. The earth is not capable of healing itself, despite the claims of environmentalists. Man is not capable of healing the earth.

The destruction of the planet is caused by sin, and the healing of the planet is caused by the Holy Spirit.

From the wilderness or the destruction of the planet, fields will become fruitful, fields will turn into forests. And this indicates a pattern of restoration, as the Holy Spirit moves across the face of the earth, and restoration will occur immediately, and right before the eyes of those that are present, namely all survivors of the tribulation, as well as all believers who have returned with Christ at the second advent, along with all angels.

At that time, we will witness the restoration of the earth, just as the angels witnessed the reconstruction of the earth a long time ago.

14 Because the palaces ['armown] shall be forsaken [natash]; the multitude [hamown] of the city [`iyr] shall be left [`azab]; the forts [`ophel] and towers [bachan] shall be for dens [ma`arah] for [`ad] ever [`owlam], a joy [masows] of wild asses [pere'], a pasture [mir`eh] of flocks [`eder];   KJV-Interlinear

14 For the palace is forsaken, the populous city deserted; the hill and the watchtower will become dens forever, a joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks; ESV

Indifference which is disguised as interest, desire for doctrine which is described in some form of helplessness, wherein people talk the talk, but won’t do anything themselves, are typical descriptions of a spiritually negative society.

And sooner or later in history, in any given nation, in society, and especially in individuals, destruction comes into the life, when God is not in it.

Destruction plays no favorites. The palaces of magnificence and wealth, the forts and towers of life that people rely on, will all come tumbling down.

When economies fail, when society fails, when nations fail, there is no resource or source of support to look to, whether it be insurance, or possessions, or status, or anything else.

Jesus Christ is the source of all things good.

When Christ is not in your life then you don’t have, all things good, you have the opposite.

And instead of the pleasant things of life, the environment becomes a home of dens of thieves, and the roaming ground of wild animals and nature.

And this is the typical description of a jungle environment, where the rules of life and happiness and safety and hope do not exist.

And so the questions are always before each individual. What do you think of Christ? What do you think of doctrine? Do you care enough to do something about it? And, will you do something?

13 Upon the land ['adamah] of my people [`am] shall come up [`alah] thorns [qowts] and briers [shamiyr]; yea, upon all the houses [bayith] of joy [masows] in the joyous [`alliyz] city [qiryah]:   KJV-Interlinear

13 for the soil of my people growing up in thorns and briers, yes, for all the joyous houses in the exultant city. ESV

Despite the many warnings that the Bible puts before us, as well as the obvious limitations that we have in life, not the least of which are our physical health, or our short lifespan, when compared to the centuries of history, people continue to disregard the word of God, by ignoring their obligation to learn from the instruction of a daily study, and otherwise do not take seriously the warnings that exist within the Bible.

The land of my people, refers to the Israelites, but also refers to all of Gods people, throughout the world, and throughout history.

Without a spiritual life, which is the land of milk and honey so to speak, there can only be thorns and briers.

The houses of joy, refers to the opulent homes of the wealthy.

Isaiah begins with a warning to all people in general, and then expands the warning to those who have homes of joy, indicating prosperity, and success, and wealth.

The point is that, the destruction will be widespread, and felt by everyone. No one will be left unaffected. No one will be excluded from the destruction. Whether rich or poor, fat or lean, the sin of ignoring God and His provision, will be destruction.

Realize, that all blessing comes from God.  Blessing comes from no other source.

And if you reject God, then you obviously reject blessing.

And if you have no blessing, then you have thorns and briers.

And, it matters not what your status is in this world, because everyone has to deal with truth and reality, and there is no dual set of realities, one for the rich and one for the poor.

Just as the lifespan ends in death for everyone, rich or poor, happy or sad, so too, we all have to face the repercussions of our choices in life, whether they be for doctrine and our spiritual life, or without them.

12 Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine, ESV

It is unfortunate, that so much opportunity is available to everyone, for the completion and fulfillment of their life. And yet as described in the previous verse, the failure or refusal of pursuing instruction in a daily Bible study will result in such a phenomenal loss, and in such phenomenal grief, that it is almost beyond the ability of words to describe.

And yet here is the result.

Beating the chest, or as herein described using the female breasts, to portray the extreme personal sorrow that will engulf a person’s life, when they have not correctly pursued their spiritual life.

Our physical life, is only the beginning of our existence.

Our spiritual life, is our fulfillment and completion of our existence.

The female breasts, the pleasant fields, the fruitful vine, are all descriptive terms of life, and production, and provision, and prosperity, and contentment.

But without the spiritual life, a person is incomplete, and all of these things are not only elusive, but impossible to obtain.

The fulfillment of oneself, and ones spiritual life, has never been easier in all of human history. And yet so few people pursue the one most important thing in all of existence.

Don’t be numbered among those who fail.

Pursue instruction in a daily Bible study, and pursue the completion and fulfillment, as well as the meaning and purpose of your life.

Isaiah 32:11

11 Tremble [charad], ye women that are at ease [sha'anan]; be troubled [ragaz], ye careless ones [batach]: strip [pashat] you, and make you bare [`arar], and gird [chagowr] sackcloth upon your loins [chalats].   KJV-Interlinear

11 Tremble, you women who are at ease, shudder, you complacent ones; strip, and make yourselves bare, and tie sackcloth around your waist. ESV

At ease, and complacent, are two terms that describe the carelessness of indifference. Everyone who refuses instruction in the daily study of the word of God, fill this description.

And the warning is that this carelessness will result in your being stripped bare of all of your possessions, and thrown into an atmosphere of deep sorrow and grieving.

Wearing the rags of despair, are in contrast to wearing the fine clothes of prosperity.

When people are in a deep sleep, then it is difficult to arouse them and bring them to a point of conscious awareness. They are in a daze, and the reality around them is like a fog.

Spiritual sleep places one in a daze and in a fog.

Indifference exists when there are no seemingly real threats around you, and you are comfortable and complacent in your life. People don’t take the threats of life, or the threats of eternity, seriously.

The here and now is what is real, and the tomorrows are of no concern.

And therefore the Bible warns, and repeats the warnings, and repeats the threatenings of the repercussions that indifferent complacency will eventually bring into the life.

Those who are indifferent and seemingly comfortable in their worldly life, are told to tremble and shudder. Because they are facing a tremendous loss in their life. A loss that they don’t take seriously, or even believe is real. And for the most part, even though life is filled with the ups and downs of difficulties throughout life, the real disaster typically does not come until the end of ones life. And then it is too late.

Isaiah 32:10

10 Many days [yowm] and years [shaneh] shall ye be troubled [ragaz], ye careless women [batach]: for the vintage [batsiyr] shall fail [kalah], the gathering ['oceph] shall not come [bow'].   KJV-Interlinear

10 In little more than a year you will shudder, you complacent women; for the grape harvest fails, the fruit harvest will not come. ESV

The phrase, many days and years, means literally, the days upon or beyond a year. This can refer to anything beyond a year, or two years, or three years, or years upon years. In every case it refers to the long duration of the event or events that are going to occur.

The vintage shall fail, is a phrase that refers to the failure in agriculture. And in general the failure of business.

The greatest part of the wealth and prosperity of a nation, is generated through business wherein the production, the buying and selling, of new goods and services all contribute to, and are a core part of, a nations prosperity.

When there is a general failure in agriculture, and a general failure in business, within a nation, then that failure leads to great distress for many people.

But, when the entire structure of business fails, then everyone is affected and all manner of physical and mental stresses overwhelm a nation.

And such is the nature of this warning.

When truth is ignored, and therefore God is ignored, then disaster is always just over the horizon.

And when people are comfortable in their way of life, and generally indifferent toward Bible doctrine, then that looming disaster will not only be the furthest thing from their mind, but that people won’t believe that it is even possible.

When a national disaster strikes, people will not be prepared either physically or mentally, to handle it.

And after a national disaster strikes and overwhelms a nation, getting back on track is extremely difficult, and takes a very long time, literally years.

And, as Isaiah’s words are directed at history in general, but primarily at the final days of history, when this disaster finally occurs in those final days, the only way out of it will be the second advent of Christ.

9 Rise up [quwm], ye women ['ishshah] that are at ease [sha'anan]; hear [shama`] my voice [qowl], ye careless [batach] daughters [bath]; give ear ['azan] unto my speech ['imrah].   KJV-Interlinear

9 Rise up, you women who are at ease, hear my voice; you complacent daughters, give ear to my speech. ESV

After first promising the grace of God to faithful believers, the language changed in order to make clarify that hypocrites and deceitful people will not be included in that grace. And now comes the criticism of the people at ease, comfortable in their lives, and not concerned with any pending threats against them or their livelihood.

The term for women, is used in the general sense, describing those who do not listen to instruction, describing those who, as a result, who do not learn, and therefore describing those going right into oblivion without a care or a second thought, before they realize their error, and that it is too late to avoid the destruction that has already come.

The precedent comes from the story of Eve in the garden, wherein she did not listen to instruction carefully, and therefore came to the wrong conclusion regarding the forbidden tree, wherein she thought that touching it, was also forbidden, and touching the tree was never mentioned as a part of the restriction.

Eve’s failure to listen and learn, left her open to the deceit of Satan, which left her open to drawing additional wrong conclusions, regarding being as smart as God, and therefore Satan was able to fool her.

And so the pattern of Eve in rejecting authority and therefore indifferent, is applied to the pattern of everyone who does not receive instruction in Bible doctrine, and therefore does not learn, and therefore are left open to false ideas and wrong conclusions.

And this weak spiritual state, prevents a person from seeing the obvious, and therefore unaware of the destruction that the world has set before them.

And therefore the warning, rise up, hear my voice, give ear to my speech. Which is the command that everyone needs to obey, with regard to learning Bible doctrine and therefore developing understanding and discernment, as well as producing wisdom, true wisdom, within the soul.

Complacent daughters, describe anyone and everyone who is indifferent towards truth in the teaching of the word of God.
