Romans 1:3
3 Concerning [peri] his [autos] Son [huios] Jesus [Iesous] Christ [Christos] our [hemon] Lord [kurios], which [ho] was made [ginomai] of [ek] the seed [sperma] of David [Dabid] according [kata] to the
flesh [sarx];
KJV-Interlinear
3 concerning His Son, who was
born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, NASB
The first verse mentions the gospel of God. The second verse is a parenthetical insertion
stating that this gospel had its origin in the Old Testament scriptures. And
now in the third verse, that gospel is stated as concerning the Son of God who
is Jesus Christ.
There is no misunderstanding that Jesus Christ is
God and man, in one person, the unique person of all creation.
He is Lord, ‘kurios,’ meaning supreme in authority,
God. As God there was never a time when
He did not exist. He has existed since
eternity past, and will continue to exist into eternity future. He is deity, and co-equal, co-infinite, and
co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit.
But also made of the seed of David, according to
the flesh.
Made, ‘ginomai,’ means to be caused to be, to
become, to be brought to pass, made. And
as is the nature of human procreation, He was formed in the womb but without
the participation or interaction of the male component. Joseph was not involved in the pregnancy of
Mary, nor was there an intimacy of any type.
God willed it and the pregnancy instantly occurred.
After the seed of David, prior to the birth of
Christ, the Jews and the Israelites before them, and the patriarchs before them,
recorded intricate and detailed genealogies, keeping track of family lineages.
Once Jesus, the man, was born and grown up and
crucified, then the need of those lineages was no longer required.
The invasion of Rome in 70 A.D. ended the temple
and the records that had been maintained.
Since that time, there is no genealogy of any
family that is continuous and unbroken up to our present day. Even royal family lines are difficult to
follow prior to 1000 A.D. And that
leaves a lot of space, back to the birth of Christ, for loosing track of all
family lines worldwide.
To look for a Messiah today, would require an
unbroken and verifiable record of a family line, and that does not exist. Jesus Christ is the one and only verifiable
person, descended from David.
According to the flesh, means just that. Jesus was born a perfect human being, just as
Adam was created a perfect human being.
Jesus is called the last Adam, born without the sin nature just as Adam
was created without the sin nature.
Jesus lived the perfect life for thirty years and then lived in his
ministry for three-and-a-half years. We
presume that Adam had a similar life while in the Garden, however, Adam sinned
and failed. Jesus did not.
Jesus’ three-and-a-half year ministry represents
one half of a process. Seven is the complete
process, three-and-a-half is one half of a process. Adam was the first Adam and failed while
Jesus is the last Adam and succeeded.
The creation of man and his fall, and the work of Christ and the work of
salvation is complete. There are no further requirements for salvation.
None of these details, or histories, or facts,
exist in any other religion, philosophy, or belief system.
