Psalm 24:1

Copyright Ó 2013 J. Neely
Psalm 24:1

1 A Psalm [mizmowr] of David. [David]
The earth ['erets] is the LORD'S, [Yahovah] and the fulness [malo'] thereof; the world, [tebel] and they that dwell [yashab] therein. KJV-Interlinear

A Psalm of David.
1 The earth is the Lord's, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it. NASB

Back in Psalm 19, the glory of God was seen in the heavens.  Here it is seen in the earth, the whole earth.

The earth belongs to God.  All of its inhabitants belong to God.

There is no foreman, no third party custodian, no manager, but only God who owns and operates this world.

This psalm portrays the path to God, the path to the one and only deity.

But who owns the world?  Who owns the universe?

It is all a part of some overwhelming natural force?  It is all a part of some event that occurred without design?  Is it all a part of some sort of joint ownership or competition between super powers or super gods?  Do various aspects of life rule various aspects of nature?  Is there a wind god, an earth god, a god of the sea, a god of the sun?  Is there a god protecting the ancestors and one converting the dead into other life forms, or perhaps renewing life again and again?  Did all that is, evolve and improve over time with some path toward perfection and no more need for improvement?

No, to all of these.

The fullness, refers to everything, excluding nothing.

There is only one God, one plan, one design, one universe, and one earth.  Life does not exist anywhere else.

There is only one owner of all that is, and that owner is God, who is the Lord, who is Jesus Christ.

There is only one sacrifice which is the cross and only one world in which it occurred.

There is only one God, one righteousness, one justice, one perfection.

Galatians 3:1

1 O [o] foolish [anoetos] Galatians, [Galates] who [tis] hath bewitched [baskaino] you, [humas] that ye should [peitho] not [me] obey [peitho] the truth, [aletheia] before [kata] whose [hos] eyes [ophthalmos] Jesus [Iesous] Christ [Christos] hath been evidently set forth, [prographo] crucified [stauroo] among [en] you [humin]?KJV-Interlinear

1 You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? NASB

Paul has already explained that pursuing a spiritual life by means of some type of your own effort, is a false pursuit.

The example was circumcision.  But the expanded example explained in the previous chapter was in maintaining two standards to live by.  The first was the standard of the Jewish tradition or any cultural or emotional tradition, and the second was the standard taught by Christ, which is living by means of faith.

Faith comes in two forms that complement each other.  The first is the learning and use and therefore understanding developed by means of doctrine or the detailed content of the scriptures.  The second is the faith of confidence that is developed by the understanding and therefore wisdom produced by that same doctrine.

But here Paul addresses the Galatians as foolish, ‘anoetos,’ which means lack of knowledge and therefore void of understanding.  In other words, naïve or foolish or stupid, which is the absence of functional knowledge in the soul.

The Bible is very clear that the spiritual life is by means of faith.  And this includes both concepts just mentioned.  If you do not learn doctrine, then you will never have faith.

Faith is not an unsubstantiated hope or wish or even luck.

Faith has to have substantive content behind it to support it and to develop it.  Faith is confidence through knowledge and understanding of reality through the facts of reality.

Truth is the perfect matching up of facts with reality.  It is not interpretation.  It is not consensus.  It is not developed from compromise or convenience.  And, it certainly does not originate from the emotions or feelings.

To pursue the spiritual life by disregarding the work of Christ on the Cross, to pursue the spiritual life by disregarding the accumulation of knowledge developed only through a daily study, is to be void of truth, naïve, ignorant, stupid, foolish.  It is to be bewitched, misled by pretense, to be fascinated by the charm of others or the charm of ones own ego.

This then is the disobedience of truth, by yielding your mind to the errors and falsehoods of life.

And this is done in the full sight of the work and intent of Christ.

As Christ has set forth.  Set forth, means to have been written down, to write before, to be presented.  And the life and death of Christ have been presented clearly and the purpose of His life and death and resurrection has been made clear.

And the work here is, crucified.  This is the dramatic effort of Christ that is intended to be made clear. That it was His work, not mans, which provides the way for salvation and the fuller life, and by no other means.

Galatians 2:21

Copyright Ó 2013 J. Neely
Galatians 2:21

21 I do [atheteo] not [ou] frustrate [atheteo] the grace [charis] of God: [theos] for [gar] if [ei] righteousness [dikaiosune] come by [dia] the law, [nomos] then [ara] Christ [Christos] is dead [apothnesko] in vain. [dorean] KJV-Interlinear

21 "I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly." NASB

Frustrate, ‘atheteo,’ means to abrogate, abolish, void, nullify.

The phrase, grace of God, refers to the favor of God as it applies within the plan of God in salvation and as it applies to life beyond or after salvation.

Righteousness refers to the justification in salvation, and justification in ones spiritual growth.

And so, if a person can be justified and/or saved by means of the law, then he can be saved by means of his own efforts.

If a person can advance in their spiritual life by means of the law, then they can advance by means of their own efforts.

If those two things are possible, then God is not needed and man can define and design his own path to holiness.  That all makes Christs work on the cross and His deaths (both deaths, the first being his spiritual death and the second death being His physical death) useless and of no importance or value.

If man can do nearly anything, and that is exactly what happened to the Levitical code, when the Priests over several centuries, made up rule after rule, regulation after regulation.  They made things complicated and then made exceptions for things that were too complicated, and then made more rules until the Law was held not within the content of the first five books but were contained within volumes and volumes and volumes of books of regulations.

And then it eventually excluded nearly everyone except the chosen Jewish few as determined by the priests.  The Law became biased and prejudiced to the maximum.

When man makes up the rules, then favoritism, exceptions and bias inevitably enter into the rules and fairness fades into non-existence.

Man cannot justify himself.  Man cannot pay the high price for his evil.  Man cannot take his own rottenness and purify it.  Man cannot rise to the level of God (someone else wanted to be like the most high), and become an equal with God.

Man cannot control his own birth, or life span, or the number of beats of his own heart or the weather for that matter.

If man could accomplish all of these things, then there would be no need for God.

Therefore, since man has virtually no control over almost everything, except his own thoughts perhaps, then man needs God, a perfect and all powerful entity, to help him out.  And if such a God exists, then He would have a plan, and make Himself and His plan known to all of humanity from the beginning to the end.  And that is exactly what the Bible and Christ, is.

Isaiah 10:31

Copyright Ó 2013 J. Neely
Isaiah 10:31ues

31 Madmenah [Madmenah] is removed; [nadad] the inhabitants [yashab] of Gebim [Gebiym] gather themselves to flee. [`uwz]KJV-Interlinear

31 Madmenah has fled. The inhabitants of Gebim have sought refuge. NASB

Both of these cities or villages are nowhere else mentioned, except here.

Their inclusion certainly places them north of Jerusalem and in line with the advance of the northern army.  Often times in archeology, places are identified when they are discovered within or near other known places.  Ancient texts are often used to help identify discoveries within an area.

And these villages are as yet not identified in archeology.

That is probably appropriate for this study as both references to these villages, removed and flee, indicate a total abandonment of those locations.

If they were just a couple of miles to the north of Jerusalem back in Isaiah’s day, then their locations would most certainly now exist within the boundaries of present day Jerusalem, which has grown to a pretty large city.  Today its population is over 800,000 and covers about 50 square miles as opposed to Isaiah’s day when it was much, much smaller.

Using this logic then, the northern portions of the present day city of Jerusalem will be abandoned as those people flee to the south and to the more inner portions of the city.

But too, realize that these events are future with respect to our present day.  They could still be a century away, or a decade away or seven years away from our present day.  If the rapture were to occur today then the final great battle which occurs at the end of the tribulation which is seven years in length will occur in seven years.  So a rapture today would mean Armageddon in seven years.

A future Jerusalem will be larger than the present day Jerusalem, we can reasonably assume.

And of course we do not know when any of these events will occur because we do not know when the Rapture will occur.

Right now we are advancing on a calendar with an unknown termination for our dispensation.  But, when the Rapture does occur, then the seven year clock countdown for the Tribulation begins.  And it will be those folks who as unbelievers will enter into the Tribulation, with most likely very little biblical knowledge if any.

Those who begin to have concerns about the course of history, will have a crash course of learning before them.  Most people even today, have little clue as to the content of the Bible, let alone Isaiah.

Very few will figure it out, while most will not.

Isaiah 10:30

Copyright Ó 2013 J. Neely
Isaiah 10:30ues

30 Lift up [tsahal] thy voice, [qowl] O daughter [bath] of [gal] Gallim: [Galliym] cause it to be heard [qashab] unto Laish, [Layish] O poor [`aniy] Anathoth. [`Anathowth] KJV-Interlinear

30 Cry aloud with your voice, O daughter of Gallim! Pay attention, Laishah and wretched Anathoth! NASB

The cities in the area we have been studying, are told to raise the alarm as to the impending invasion and approaching army.

Gallim was the birthplace of the man who became the second husband (after David) of Sauls daughter, Michal, 1 Sam 24:44.

Laish is not mentioned as a village being in the tribe of Benjamin, but there is a village mentioned as being in the northern part of Palestine in the tribe of Dan, Judg. 18:7, 29.  But since our context is in the vicinity of the tribe of Benjamin, then it most likely refers to a village within the tribe boundaries of Benjamin, that no longer exists and was not otherwise mentioned elsewhere in the Bible.

Anathoth is a city in the tribe of Benjamin and the location where Jeremiah was born, Josh. 21:18; Jere. 1:1.

And finally the word for poor, ‘aniy,’ does not refer to the financial state of the people, but here is used to refer to them in pity.  And it is such a pity that implies that they should have known but did not pay attention.

They are being invaded.  The invading army is advancing rapidly. The occupying army has been brutal to all it conquers.  And so they are in its path and therein is the pity. They are about to be crushed without mercy.

These events, as we have already seen, are future events that will occur in the Tribulation, which is also called the final days.  This invasion will occur at the very end of the Tribulation.  This invasion is a part of the last great war which is commonly called Armageddon.

Since Isaiah was written many centuries B.C., and we are now 2013 years A.D. and we still have not seen the final days of our own dispensation, then the people who will be living in the area have ample notice given them regarding these events.  If they were positive toward God and doctrine then they would probably not be living there, or at least they would not be caught by surprise.

Lift up thy voice, simply means the startling cry of alarm with total surprise.  They are shocked.  They are stunned.  And that should seem rather odd, since for the previous seven years, or perhaps six-and-a-half years, the entire world will have been under the most phenomenal judgments ever.  By this time, well over half of the population of the world will be dead.  And yet, these people are shocked, stunned by the invasion that is moving toward them.

One would think that by this time, they would be seeking answers, but in fact they were not.  Our study in Revelation presents a more lucid view of the attitudes of the people in that future time.

Isaiah 10:29

Copyright Ó 2013 J. Neely
Isaiah 10:29ues

29 They are gone over [`abar] the passage: [ma`abar] they have taken up their lodging [malown] at Geba; [Geba`] Ramah [Ramah] is afraid; [charad] Gibeah [Gib`ah] of Saul [Sha'uwl] is fled. [nuwc] KJV-Interlinear

29 They have gone through the pass, saying, "Geba will be our lodging place." Ramah is terrified, and Gibeah of Saul has fled away. NASB

The passage, ‘maabar,’ refers to a crossing of a river or stream, but it can also refer to a narrow pass through which an army can travel.

The passage is not specified, but it could not have been the crossing of the Jordan River because all of these landmarks are already on the west side of the Jordan.

In 1 Sam 13:23, the 'passage of Michmash' is mentioned as the boundary of the garrison of the Philistines.

Between Jeba and Mukhmas there is a steep valley, which is probably the passage referred to. This valley, runs into another that joins it on the north, and then comes out on the plain near Jericho. In the valley are two hills having steep rocky sides, which are probably the rocks mentioned, in connection with Jonathan's adventure, as a narrow way between the rock Bozez on the one side, and Seneh on the other, 1 Sam 14:4-5.

This valley is the dividing line between the tribes of Ephraim and Benjamin, for Geba on the south side of this valley was the northern limit of Judah and Benjamin, 2 Kings 23:8.  And Bethel on its north side was on the southern border of Ephraim, Judg 16:1-2.

This was an important place, and could normally be easily defended.

So, by the invading army’s having passed this place means an unhindered advance toward Jerusalem, showing that nothing impeded their progress, and that its leaders were rapidly moving with their army toward the city of Jerusalem.

Once the units of the northern army have passed through the pass, then they set up their headquarters near Geba.

Geba was a city located in the tribe of Benjamin just outside of the northern boundary of Judah, 1 Kg. 15:22.

Ramah, meaning elevated ground, is to the east between Geba and Gibeah.  The residents there are shuddering with fear.  Their state of mind is not one of defense or even of surrender, but one of paralysis in fear.

Gibeah was the birthplace of Saul, 1 Sam. 11:4; 15:34; 2 Sam. 21:6, and is so mentioned in order to distinguish it from the other Gibeah’s, one in Judah and one where Eleazar was buried.  This city is within the boundary of tribe of Benjamin.  And again showing the advance of the enemy not yet into the boundary of the Tribe of Judah.

Gibeah is fled, means that they all left in a hurry.  The meaning of fled here is to be put in commotion, to abandon, to leave in a hurry, to run in panic.

They were at least thinking, and since the invasion is coming rapidly from the northeast, then it is reasonable to assume that they will head toward the safety Jerusalem to the southwest.

This also shows that the invasion was rapid, unexpected, and caught the general population off guard.  That means that they did not know doctrine, or at least this portion of Isaiah.

Psalm 23:6

Copyright Ó 2013 J. Neely
Psalm 23:6

6 Surely goodness [towb] and mercy [checed] shall follow [radaph] me all the days [yowm] of my life: [chay] and I will dwell [yashab] in the house [bayith] of the LORD [Yahovah] for ever ['orek]. [yowm] KJV-Interlinear

6 Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. NASB

This is a concluding statement for the psalm.

Surely, 'ak', an affirmation, therefore, certainly, only, truly. Because of all of these things, then the following will happen. What will happen?

Goodness and mercy will pursue me.

Goodness, 'towb', in the broadest sense of the word, beautiful, best, bountiful, favor, prosperity and a long list of other similar words describes the good that comes to us.

Lovingkindness, 'chered', good deeds, kindly, mercy. And mercy is Gods grace in action, or the action of the blessing, the reality of the blessing, not just the promise, or the anticipation, but the real McCoy, the actual blessing stream itself.

Follow, 'radaph', run after, chase, put to flight, pursue. Blessings pursue the mature believer. The believer does not have to work for blessing, does not have to hustle in life to gain Gods acceptance and a few crumbs that may fall from heaven. Blessings come rushing to the mature believer.

And, combined with all of the previous, I will dwell, current tense, not future tense, not maybe I will dwell but I 'will' dwell, 'yashab' settle, dwell, sit down, marry, remain. And where do we dwell? In the house of the Lord both now and forever. Where is Gods house? In heaven of course. But we are here on earth, so how in the world can we dwell in Gods house now if we cannot get to heaven?

We dwell there in our fellowship status. We are physically here on earth, but positionally in heaven in Gods house when we are in fellowship. There are other specific studies on fellowship, so I'll not go into that here. I want to conclude this psalm and its point and compare it to the status of those people in Rev. 6.

There, in Rev 6, we saw the disasters occurring to those unbelievers as well as negative believers. They were people who lacked knowledge of Gods Word, and by their own choice. They had the opportunity to learn, but rejected it.  Their lives were upside down, in chaos, they were in frightful terror. I guess I should say, they 'will be' in terror, etc., since this is all future.

But to those believers both then and now, to those mature believers there is peace, blessing, prosperity, and a relaxed state of life despite any environmental difficulties that may exist.

The mature believer is the one who is the recipient of maximum blessing. The mature believer in fellowship and that is the key to the Christian life - fellowship coupled with knowledge of Bible doctrine coupled with the application of that same doctrine to ones daily life.

Goodness, blessings in all categories, will be received - Gods mercies, His grace in action, shall pursue the mature believer. And pursue is the point that needs to be emphasized. Many people do not believe this Bible stuff. These people are out of fellowship and perhaps do not understand its concept as well as its mechanics. Perhaps they do not have the interest to learn. Perhaps they do not have the patience to learn. Perhaps they are simply inconsistent in their daily Bible study, maybe it is just a few days of the week or month, or a little here and a little study there.

The result is a short circuited study program, therefore a short circuited spiritual life. God presents His best gifts inside His Palace. If you are never there, then do not expect to receive them.

If you are living outside in the jungle, then what should you expect? The gifts of the jungle and those gifts are not gifts at all, but deceptive lures into your doom.

Will dwell, is present tense. This is a state that you can have right now through your consistent analysis of your own life (if we judge ourselves, then we shall not be judged), followed by your confession to God the Father of those sins in your life (if we confess our sins), then the result being our forgiveness (He is faithful and just to forgive), and our restoration into fellowship (and to restore us from all unrighteousness).

When you are in the fellowship sphere, then you reside within Gods will, within Gods house, within Gods palace, and that is the place of your relationship, your active relationship, with God.

Your spiritual life operates and functions fully when you are resident in fellowship.  For there, God does all of the work, and distributes all of the blessings necessary for you to have a phenomenal life, even now, in this life.
