Psalm 22:19

Copyright Ó 2013 J. Neely
Psalm 22:19

19 But be not thou far [rachaq] from me, O LORD: [Yahovah] O my strength, ['eyaluwth] haste [chuwsh] thee to help [`ezrah] me.  KJV-Interlinear

19 But Thou, O Lord, be not far off; O Thou my help, hasten to my assistance. NASB

The word of God is the mind of Christ. These are His thoughts.

Reading and studying the Bible, and doing so while in fellowship, places His thoughts, knowledge, understanding, wisdom, in you.

When on the cross, there was no one standing in His corner. He had been abandoned by everyone, opposed by everyone, retained loyalties from no one.

Only God, stood with Him.  Only God stands with you.

Regardless of the circumstances you find yourself in, due to history, due to circumstances, due to your own decisions, due to whatever, God and God alone, is with you always.

God had a plan for Jesus’ life.  He was to go to the cross for you and me. That plan was not going to change.  Jesus was to endure it regardless of how it progressed.

God has a plan for your life. Often times we might wonder why certain things happen, but more often than not, they happen for our own good.  Whether for our learning, whether for someone else's observation, one cannot say, But God knows what He is doing, and God is never wrong in anything.

God is never far from you. All three members of the Trinity indwell each and every believer in Christ.  That includes you.

God sustains your life.  He is the source of your strength and all that you are, regardless of what you might think of that.

And as you add doctrine to your soul, within the framework of Gods spiritual process, then your strength and inner resources grow exponentially.

God is always there to help, but in accordance with His wishes and plan and timetable, not yours.

Psalm 22:18

Psalm 22:18

18 They part [chalaq] my garments [beged] among them, and cast [naphal] lots [gowral] upon my vesture. [labuwsh] KJV-Interlinear

18 They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots. NASB

When armies went to battle, is was common practice after the battle, that the property and weapons of the losers were collected by the winners.  The spoils of war as it were.

Captured prisoners were enslaved or executed and their things were divided up amongst the winning soldiers.

Some things were divided up and other things of value were distributed by the casting of lots. Today we would call that the flip of a coin, heads or tails, the roll of dice, or some such game of chance where there was but one winner.

By the time of Jesus, once on the cross, his clothes were stripped from him and divided up among the soldiers, and then the tunic which was the more valuable article of clothing, was distributed by the casting of lots, rather than by being cut up into equal parts, Matt 27:35; Luke 23:34; John 19:23-24.  The John 19 passage gives the best description of this process.

This event was of course 1000 years after this prophecy.  David lived shortly prior to 1000 B.C.

Crucifixion was not a common practice until the time of the Persian Empire in the early 500’s B.C. when Darius I crucified many thousands.  The Greeks picked up on the torture practice and then the Romans began using it as the official form of execution in the first century A.D.

And as these things apply to one person, this chapter gives many references to practices that did not occur at the time of its writing, thus directing it to but one person, namely Jesus Christ, the Messiah, of whom David was writing.

No imposter could possible accomplish this on themselves, as these things depend on the actions of others (courts, judges, soldiers, crowds of people, etc.).

Galatians 2:2

Copyright Ó 2013 J. Neely
Galatians 2:2

2 And [de] I went up [anabaino] by [kata] revelation, [apokalupsis] and [kai] communicated [anatithemi] unto them [autos] that gospel [euaggelion] which [hos] I preach [kerusso] among [en] the Gentiles, [ethnos] but [de] privately [kata] [idios] to them which were of reputation, [dokeo] lest by any means [mepos] [-pos] I should run, [trecho] or [e] had run, [trecho] in [eis] vain. [kenos]KJV-Interlinear

2 And it was because of a revelation that I went up; and I submitted to them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but I did so in private to those who were of reputation, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain. NASB

Paul from time to time received communications from God, concerning various topics of doctrine, Eph. 3:3.

And even though there were those who wanted clarification of the gospel and salvation and Levitical rituals, and how these things were being taught in Jerusalem, Paul went to Jerusalem not at the request of those present, even though they did commission that trip, Acts 15:2, but at the direction of God.

Both parties were involved, but the final determination for his going was from God.

No doubt that Paul was hesitant in going to Jerusalem, because of the anti-Paul sentiment that he most probably would run into.  But God cleared up that concern and Paul went as directed by God, and as requested by people.

Paul did not go to receive instruction.  Paul did not go to consult. Paul did not go in order to observe or learn new techniques.

He went to Jerusalem in order to teach or reveal that which he was preaching to the gentiles.

And that was principally, that salvation was available to the gentiles, that the gentiles were not required to subscribe to the Law of Moses, or of Judaism, that salvation was through faith and nothing more.

He went to the leadership in Jerusalem, in private, and did not go to a public forum or assembly, so that his trip would not end up in a debate of popular thought and thus become a waste of time.

Paul spoke to the apostles that were there, not as a group but spoke with them in private in one on ones or twos in order to present more clearly his views.

In a public setting, his views would have been rejected and challenged by unbelieving Jews, as will be the case later on when they try to persecute him and succeed in getting him arrested.

To run means to have failed or to have made the trip in futility.  Thus the purpose of the trip was to present his teaching at the request of those sending him, but also, God sent him in order to make it clear that his teaching was correct, thus even if informally, others in Jerusalem , even the apostles would see and learn the truth in a more correct sense.

Paul already knew the truth.  He had no need to travel anywhere, much less correct anyone.  His ministry was to the gentiles. One man was commissioned to teach all gentiles, a vast population down through the ages since that time.

The eleven other apostles were commissioned to teach only one race. The Jewish people were and have been, a stubborn and stiff necked people, requiring more intense instruction.

The gentiles seem to learn more easily.  The Jewish people have been indifferent toward truth for centuries.  That has resulted in many atrocities throughout history.

It will not be until that last generation, during the Tribulation, that the greatest number of Jews will finally believe in Christ, and they will do it in vast numbers.

Galatians 2:1

Copyright Ó 2013 J. Neely
Galatians 2:1

1 Then [epeita] fourteen [dekatessares] years [etos] after [dia] I went up [anabaino] again [palin] to [eis] Jerusalem [Hierosoluma] with [meta] Barnabas, [Barnabas] and took [sumparalambano] Titus [Titos] with me [sumparalambano] also. [kai] KJV-Interlinear

1 Then after an interval of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also. NASB

Whereas Paul in the last chapter made his case for learning or receiving instruction on the true gospel (all doctrine) from Christ alone, now in this chapter he will make his case for the consistency of what he has been teaching, as the same as what the apostles have been teaching.

A period of fourteen years had passed since his last trip to Jerusalem for which he went to discuss matters of doctrinal concern.

Paul had traveled to Jerusalem on missions of mercy, carrying offerings of money to help aid those who were financially hard pressed.

But interim trips are not the focus here in this chapter.  There have been two trips documented.  One in Acts 11 and the other in Acts 15.  There may have been more undocumented trips but they are irrelevant to this subject.

In the Acts 15 trip, the question of whether or not being true to the law of Moses was required in order to be saved, rather than simply believing in Christ. This question was brought up in Jerusalem.  And without going much further, Paul and all of the apostles agreed that salvation had no requirement of circumcision prior to being saved.

Needless to say, circumcision was a male related thing and that would cause all women to be excluded from salvation.  So the question was somewhat ludicrous.

Circumcision is a subject that will be brought up later, but this trip to Jerusalem as related in Acts 15, was for the purpose of settling that question.

Paul was not trying to match his story with anything documented in Acts, nor vice-versa.  Needless to say, Acts had not been written at the time of this writing.  Acts was written about ten years later, after Paul had written Galatians.

But a few things are brought out in this verse.  First, Paul knew Barnabas and Titus at this early time, and they accompanied him on this trip.

And second, the question being raised and its answer, documents the continuity of the teachings of Paul and the apostles, with whom he had not been in contact.  And thus the consistency and continuity of the Christian doctrines that were being taught in those early years of Christianity.

Isaiah 10:1

Copyright Ó 2013 J. Neely
Isaiah 10:1ues

1 Woe [howy] unto them that decree [chaqaq] unrighteous ['aven] decrees, [cheqeq] and that write [kathab] grievousness [`amal] which they have prescribed; [kathab] KJV-Interlinear

1 Woe to those who enact evil statutes, And to those who constantly record unjust decisions, NASB

The first four verses in this chapter complete the prophecy which was begun in the previous chapter.

These first four verses, warn against injustice, unfairness, discrimination, oppression, and persecution and so forth.  These are the things that result, when truth is rejected and fantasy beliefs or idealisms are pursued.

All of mans attempts to legislate justice, are inevitably directed at social morals and values, which man defines.

The sin nature causes these to result in discrimination, favoritism, ostracism, and such.  This results in a perversion of justice and judgment from a governmental posture.  This overflows to all levels of establishment, from ones own thinking and volition, to family structures, to organizational flaws between people.

When a society is dysfunctional, then those who write these statutes, apply them with impunity, and as such perfect righteousness and perfect justice which come only from God, are diluted into obscurity.

Unfortunately as man drifts further and further away from truth, then all things wrong, seem right and reasonable, and all things right, seem burdensome and unfair.

The ‘woe’ is a warning, and in this case a gentle warning as those who hear it will tend to disregard it regardless of its impact and force.  And when the result of the woe occurs in difficulties, then most will never remember it as they will be too busy fretting or fearing, or complaining or blaming.

And when we get to verse four, then we will see that everyone will be in one of two categories, among the captives or among the dead.
