16 And [kai] the four [tessares] and [kai] twenty [eikosi] elders, [presbuteros] which [ho] sat [kathemai] before [enopion] God [theos] on [epi] their [autos] seats, [thronos] fell [pipto] upon [epi] their [autos] faces, [prosopon] and [kai] worshipped [proskuneo] God, [theos] KJV-Interlinear

16 And the twenty-four elders, who sit on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God, NASB

The twenty-four elders were first introduced in Rev. 4:4, and are representative of the Raptured Church Age believers, who were taken up into heaven at the Rapture. This is from the perspective of Johns vision of these future events. The Rapture from our perspective, of course, has not yet occurred.

But it will occur at some point in the future, and when we are all in heaven, and while the world is undergoing its massive judgments during that future Tribulation period, we will be fully aware of the events that are taking place, as they are taking place.

And even though we will already have our resurrection bodies, and our evaluation before Christ will have been completed, and we will already have received our eternal rewards, or at least the formal notice of them, along with our crowns for being a part of the Royal Family, we will all still give honor and proper respect and worship, to Christ.

Our crowns and honors and recognitions will be set aside and we will all know and understand the truth perfectly, and every one of us, will of our own volition, voluntarily kneel before Christ.

For were it not for Christ, none of us would even exist. For from dust, He gave humanity the ability to perpetuate biological life, and from nothing Christ created our individual human life.

15 And [kai] the seventh [hebdomos] angel [aggelos] sounded; [salpizo] and [kai] there were [ginomai] great [megas] voices [phone] in [en] heaven, [ouranos] saying, [lego] The kingdoms [basileia] of this world [kosmos] are become [ginomai] the kingdoms of our [hemon] Lord, [kurios] and [kai] of his [autos] Christ; [Christos] and [kai] he shall reign [basileuo] for [eis] ever [aion] and ever. [aion]KJV-Interlinear

15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there arose loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever." NASB

Since Genesis, the anointed of God, Jesus Christ, has been the focus and center piece of Gods divine plan. Since eternity past, when the second person of the Trinity was given the title, Son of God, His rule and sovereignty was foretold and conveyed as an event which is certain.

In many passages in the Old Testament, His Kingdom and eventual rule is promised and explained, but not until this book of Revelation, are the details of those final years of human rule, explained in such great detail.

In three series of steps, Christ, through John, describes the written warnings through the seals, the imminent warnings through the trumpets, and finally the actual judgments themselves through the bowl judgments.

The final three in each respective category, represent the most horrific of judgments ever.

Christ, through this book has given humanity fair warning in writing. Christ has given humanity fair warning through real events in history. And now, in the end, the final warning will come when the actual final events of history are carried out.

Through the seven years of the tribulation, there will be many who will ignore the warning signs. Signs that are simply too real to ignore, and yet they will be ignored.

Just as in other times of history, when people have ignored the warnings signs of current events in each respective generation, then there will always be those who never accept the truth of life and the truth of their own failure to see it. We are living such an example even in our current day, with all of the horrible government policies and social attitudes that we have now, combined with the many problems that we all face today. People simply ignore them, and many presume that the problems are due to someone else's fault. Not their own.

But with the seventh trumpet, all the warnings will have been made, and now the actual judgments will begin.

The seventh trumpet sets in motion the final consummation of Gods redemptive plan. This trumpet describes the final fury of the Day of the Lord judgments (16), the final harvest of judgment on earth (11:18; 16:19), and the Lamb's defeat of the kings of the earth (17:12-18), culminating in the final, climactic triumph of Christ at Armageddon (19:11-21).

With the sounding of the seventh trumpet, the warnings have been completed, and now God will act and retake from Satan, that which is rightfully His.

14 The second [deuteros] woe [ouai] is past; [aperchomai] and, [kai] behold, [idou] the third [tritos] woe [ouai] cometh [erchomai] quickly. [tachu] KJV-Interlinear

14 The second woe is past; behold, the third woe is coming quickly. NASB

The first woe was the fifth trumpet. The second woe, which we have just finished studying, is the sixth trumpet. The third woe, is yet to come. That third woe is the seventh trumpet, which will include all of the remaining judgments, the seven bowl judgments.

Have you ever been in trouble as a child, and your parent starts counting to three, and if you don’t start or stop whatever it is that you are doing by the time they get to three, then your parent will lower the boom on you?

Well, that is what the world is in for. God is going to count to three and most everyone is going to ignore Him.

When you have a parent after you, the worst might be a spanking or getting grounded or something like that. That is, when a responsible parent is on the other end of the discipline.

But when God is on your case, and you flip him off, so to speak, then the stakes become much higher.

For just a few years, truth will have been rejected and replaced with evil, corruption, murder, theft, immoralities beyond description, atrocities beyond description. Economies will have been dismantled, inflation and famine will be running out of control, and death will be all around.

People will have the gospel every day. People will have the opportunity to change their minds away from evil. People will have the opportunity to turn to God, to Christ, to truth, and to the accomplishment of a completed life of blessings for themselves, but they will reject it.

And then God will say, ‘Three!’

13 And [kai] the same [en] [ekeinos] hour [hora] was there [ginomai] a great [megas] earthquake, [seismos] and [kai] the tenth part [dekatos] of the city [polis] fell, [pipto] and [kai] in [en] the earthquake [seismos] were slain [apokteino] [onoma] of men [anthropos] seven [hepta] thousand: [chilias] and [kai] the remnant [loipoy] were [ginomai] affrighted, [emphobos] and [kai] gave [didomi] glory [doxa] to the God [theos] of heaven. [ouranos] KJV-Interlinear

13 And in that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell; and seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven. NASB

The two witnesses are Hebrew and therefore point to the Jewish community, which is an unbelieving people.

The location is Jerusalem, the capital of Israel and the center location of history.

The message is the gospel of Christ, of which will be repeated, by these two witnesses, for 1260 days or about three-and-a-half years, and from other sources for a longer length of time.

And during all of that time, those folks will be rejecting the message, with indifference and annoyance, until the two witnesses are actually killed.

Throughout all of this time, there will be the simultaneous disasters and problems of the world, where millions of people will die, where inflation and famine will ravage the planet, where crime and atrocities will abound, and still the local population will remain indifferent toward Christ.

But then after three and a half days, these two witnesses will arise back to life and ascend to heaven before everyone's eyes, and still people will look at the scene with awe but no faith.

Until, that is, the world around them comes crashing down around them, literally.

An earthquake will result immediately, just as it did when Christ died His physical death on the Cross.

Now this earthquake is nothing when compared to earthquakes in past history, but it is sufficient to finally bring the population of Jerusalem, to faith in Christ.

Primarily a Jewish population, this city will be one of the hold-outs fighting faith in Christ, until this earthquake strikes.

The verse is clear. A tenth of the city will collapse, so the earthquake will be violent enough to bring down buildings and structures. The death count will be seven thousand.

And just as these exact facts have already been recorded now, for a future event, so too, many folks will probably know of this specific prophetic event sequence, and that certainly, along with fear, will bring people to Christ, in what may be the greatest revival of faith in all of Jewish history.

And they will need all of the faith that they can get, because this city is going to become the target of the greatest military attack in all of human history.

12 Kiss [nashaq] the Son, [bar] lest he be angry, ['anaph] and ye perish ['abad] from the way, [derek] when his wrath ['aph] is kindled [ba`ar] but a little. [ma`at] Blessed ['esher] are all they that put their trust [chacah] in him. KJV-Interlinear

12 Do homage to the Son, lest He become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him! NASB

Homage or kiss, ‘nashaq,’ means to greet or to show respect. In ancient times and even in our present day, some cultures use the kiss on the cheek, on the ring finger, on the foot, to show recognition of the superior position of the one being kissed, and thus honored.

The first person of the Trinity, the Father, along with the second and third persons of the Trinity, the Son and the Spirit as we have come to know them, all decided in eternity past to make the Second person, the ultimate designation of supreme authority.

They all did this because they knew that throughout all of history, both angel and human, in arrogance, would reject this arrangement, and pursue a relationship with the Father, thus ignoring the Son and the Plan of God.

Therefore, to honor God, is to recognize His plan, to recognize the Son as the ultimate authority, Messiah, Savior, and intermediary between man and God, and as the designated heir to be the King for all of eternity, over all that exists.

Lest He become angry, which means to deal with you through the policy of truth by means of discipline or judgment.

That you might perish from the way, which means to fail in your pursuit.

In the way, means to pursue a designated path of travel. You can choose your own path, or you can choose Gods path which He has chosen for you. To perish means to fail, or to not arrive at your destination.

Your destination of your own choosing will always fail. To not follow Gods path, means that you will not gain the objective that God has waiting for you at the end of your travels. Your travels means your life.

As an unbeliever, you will not make it to heaven. Unbelievers will never receive any happiness.

As a believer who rejects doctrine, which is the means of spiritual growth and production, means that you will not obtain the phenomenal additional blessings that await you in spiritual maturity, and it also means that you will not achieve some of the happiness’s (plural), which await you.

Do you remember Psalm 1?

His wrath, means divine policy in the application of justice, whether in discipline or judgment, which also includes the withholding of blessings.

Is kindled, means by means of the action of sin, or evil, or indifference, or lack of progress in ones spiritual life.

But a little, is not a reference to the degree of anger or application of justice, but it means that in due course, in a short amount of time. Therefore, after a little time, human history is but a dot on the timeline of all of eternity, then Christ, the designated Son, will apply His authority and wield His power in closing out history, ending evil forever, and entering all (believers) who have abided by Gods plan, into eternity future.

Blessed, ‘esher,’ which is in the masculine gender, indicating mastery and possession of happiness, all happiness’s. And this means that those who are obedient to God, to His plan, to the pursuit of learning and growing up in their spiritual lives to maturity, and therefore trusting in His plan and promises and abilities, then the ultimate goal of a thoroughly and totally completed life in many happiness’s, belongs to them, and to no one else.

Psalm one sets out the goal and the means of attaining that goal.

Psalm two sets out mans plan and its futility, and Gods plan and its certainty.

You have the end goal made clear, and the choice of either of two paths to obtain that goal.

Only Gods path will work.

Don’t play games with your future, be very careful of your choice, for it affects your entire eternal future.

11 Serve [`abad] the LORD [Yahovah] with fear, [yir'ah] and rejoice [giyl] with trembling. [ra`ad]KJV-Interlinear

11 Worship the Lord with reverence, And rejoice with trembling. NASB

Serve as a slave would obey a masters commands. Not service where you make up your own rules of service.

Rejoice, as in twirling around, to move in a circle, as in the dancing or leaping of the heart.

With fear, as in awe, reverence, or dread of loss, with the understanding that if you do not, then He will arise against you and/or deny or remove blessings.

With trembling, as in a feminine reaction, to shudder, to tremble as when a dearly loved one returns home after a long absence. Trembling such that if you observe any opposition against God, Christ, doctrine, or your spiritual life, then such opposition will be met with overwhelming and just consequences.

Your emotions are thus a mixture of awe and fear toward a God who is merciful and wonderful on the one hand, and powerful and threatening on the other, depending on which side of truth you subscribe your life.

From dust, God has made man. From nothing, God has made humanity. From insignificant things, God has brought life to each one of us, and has promised us not only eternal life, but an inheritance beyond imagination, the value so vast, of which cannot be calculated.

Is that not worth, at the very least, some of your attention?

12 And [kai] they heard [akouo] a great [megas] voice [phone] from [ek] heaven [ouranos] saying [lego] unto them, [autos] Come up [anabaino] hither. [hode] And [kai] they ascended up [anabaino] to [eis] heaven [ouranos] in [en] a cloud; [nephele] and [kai] their [autos] enemies [echthros] beheld [theoreo] them. [autos] KJV-Interlinear

12 And they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, "Come up here." And they went up into heaven in the cloud, and their enemies beheld them. NASB

They, is an immediate reference to the two witnesses.

The two witnesses heard a voice, not directed to them only, but a voice from heaven, a voice which could be heard by everyone.

The two were killed just three-and-a-half days earlier, in full public view. We can reasonably presume that they would or may be killed with some form of firearm, being shot with bullets and such. So there would be bullet holes and blood and everything that you would expect in a public killing.

A large audience will view this event, and a similarly large audience will witness their being raised from the dead, back to life.

Note one important thing, this is not a resurrection, but a resuscitation. There is a big difference between the two.

Resuscitation means bringing life back into a biological body, where it resumes life as it was before. A resuscitated body is subject to death again, in the normal sense of physical death.

Resurrection is the replacement of the physical body with a new and perfect body which will not and cannot ever die.

Throughout history there are many examples of people who have presumably died, and then came back to life, to live their life and then die a physical death in due course.

Lazarus died, and remained dead for several days, then Jesus brought him back to life. Lazarus was resuscitated, lived his normal life and then died a natural death as everyone does.

These two witnesses, if indeed they are Elijah and Moses, will have already lived their lives thousands of years ago, and were taken from this world in the manner in which we have already studied, and kept by God until the Tribulation. Then, God will bring them back in a manner which is not disclosed to us, then they will conduct their ministry, and then be killed in a very public event.

Their death will be violent enough that everyone can clearly see that they are indeed dead, and not faking it.

God will again, restore them to their physical bodies. They will stand up so that all can clearly see that they are alive, and then God (Christ), will call them (for all to hear) up to heaven, and up they will be lifted out of the sight of all of humanity, and whisked off to heaven.

They will not be resurrected, because their resurrection is with those believers from the Age of Israel, which will occur at the end of the Tribulation, following the Second Advent. This is the third resurrection.

Jesus was the first (first of the first fruits).
Church Age believers are the second resurrection (the rest of the first fruits) which will occur at the Rapture.
Old Testament believers will be resurrected in the third resurrection which will occur after the Second Advent. This also includes all Tribulation believers.
The fourth and final resurrection will be for believers from the Millennium, which will occur at the end of the Millennium.

Each group of believers will receive their Judgment Seat of Christ evaluation immediately following their resurrection.

Both awe and fear and terror will strike the hearts of all who witness their ascension. This combination of emotions will be caused by uncertainty, wonder, and second guessing if they, the public, have not made some big mistake.

But note, this emotional reaction is not followed with faith in Christ. At least not immediately. Yet another big event is required before some (not all) will actually believe in Christ.

11 And [kai] after [meta] three [treis] days [hemera] and [kai] an half [hemisu] the Spirit [pneuma] of life [zoe] from [ek] God [theos] entered [eiserchomai] into [epi] them, [autos] and [kai] they stood [histemi] upon [epi] their [autos] feet; [pous] and [kai] great [megas] fear [phobos] fell [pipto] upon [epi] them which saw [theoreo] them. [autos] KJV-Interlinear

11 And after the three and a half days the breath of life from God came into them, and they stood on their feet; and great fear fell upon those who were beholding them. NASB

The physical human body is enabled by biological life. The biological life requires support from some outside force in order to survive.

In the womb, the biological is supported by the mother through the umbilical cord. Outside of the womb, when that cord is cut, then another force is needed in order to support life in the person, and that force is human life, which God breathes into the human soul, which both, reside in the biological body during the time that the individual is alive in this world.

When a person dies, then the soul along with its resident human life, leaves the body. The physical body lacking that support, dies and immediately begins the process of decay. The body returns to the dust from whence it came, and the soul returns to its source, God. That is why we say, ‘Absent from the body and face to face with the Lord.’

The body is not face to face with God, only the soul with its resident human life.

Believers have one more component of life and that is the human spirit, into which eternal life is placed by God, when the person believes in Christ.

Unbelievers do not have a human spirit, and therefore lack eternal life.

Eternal life is the life that is extended by God to believers, allowing them to live in heaven forever, and thus prevents them from dying yet again, as unbelievers will, when they are cast into the Lake of Fire.

These two men are believers in Christ. They are mature believers. When they are killed, God removes their souls and spirits for their bodies. The bodies fall where they stand, and their souls and spirits return to God in complete safety. They will wait in heaven for the required three-and-a-half days, and God will bring them back into their physical bodies, which humanity will see them as coming back to life, and these two men will stand up as though nothing had ever happened to them.

If there are holes and cuts and bruises and such on their bodies, then the wounds will remain and will still be visible.

But then, God commands life, not biology. Jesus once said that He could command rocks to rise into descendants of Abraham. God does not require the physiology that you and I believe in needed in order to support life. Neither is man the origin of human life as so many seem to believe, but God alone is the origin and creator of human life, Gen. 2:7.

Those who see them rise, means that not everyone will see them rise.

The city is about to get hit with a powerful earthquake, so people in the local region will certainly see them rise back to life. And we can presume that everyone who has some semblance of media, whether television, internet, or some other technology, will also see them rise.

And now, they, the viewing public, will experience fear as never before, which seems rather odd since all of these people will have already seen demon hoards, tormentors, disasters as never before recorded in history, half of the worlds population fallen into death for one reason or another, a world in chaos and so forth.

If that did not frighten them, then why would two formerly preaching dead guys coming back to life, frighten them? And not only frighten them, but throw them into total terror, a fear beyond anything that any person has ever experienced.

And the answer to that question is answered in the next verse, which we will study tomorrow.

10 And [kai] they that dwell [katoikeo] upon [epi] the earth [ge] shall rejoice [chairo] over [epi] them, [autos] and [kai] make merry, [euphraino] and [kai] shall send [pempo] gifts [doron] one to another; [allelon] because [hoti] these [houtos] two [duo] prophets [prophetes] tormented [basanizo] them that dwelt [katoikeo] on [epi] the earth. [ge] KJV-Interlinear

10 And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry; and they will send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth. NASB

The word for earth, ‘ge,’ is a general word for the land, or for the region. It can also be applied to the entire planet, however in scripture it is generally used for the local area more so than the entire world, Ex 3:8; 13:5; Deut 19:2,10; 28:12; Neh 9:22; Ps 37:9,11,22,29; 66:4; Prov 2:21; 10:30; Joel 1:2, Matt 2:6,20-21; 14:15; Acts 7:7,11,36,40; 13:17.

This suggests to us a couple of things about life in the Tribulation.

First, we know that the tribulation is filled with judgments.
Second, we know that of those judgments, there will be lots of disruption, damage and death scattered across the entire planet.
Third, we know that these two witnesses, will be preaching to the entire world.
Fourth, we know that their ministry will last for 1260 days, or roughly three-and-a-half-years.
Fifth, we know that when their demise occurs, there will be many people of all nations and cultures, in Jerusalem.
Sixth, therefore, we know that somehow, their message will be transmitted or relayed, or transmitted either by mouth or technology, around the entire world.
Seventh, when these two are killed, and their bodies left in the street, then the entire world will not know of it immediately, but the local residents or visitors, will know of it immediately, and the rest of the world will probably hear of it in due course.

We have not yet studied their being raised from the dead, but when that occurs, then some people will respond favorably toward Christ, but most will not. And, then there will be a great earthquake in Jerusalem, where folks will perceive themselves as impervious to disasters.

So, even though the response and reaction to their deaths will eventually be worldwide, the emphasis in this passage is toward the local population in Jerusalem.

When evil people and gossips get together and hound a chosen victim, they celebrate when their victim falls on hard times or difficulties. It has nothing to do with what their victim has done, for most victims do nothing to deserve being targeted as such.

This is no different. The two witnesses, will have been teaching truth, salvation and posing no threat to anyone. However, those who are negative toward God and doctrine, will see their preaching as annoying and a nuisance to their lifestyles. Perceiving truth as a torment, when in fact their own evil is the real tormenting of life.

The rejoicing is not a party atmosphere, but a celebration of sorts, over the demise of something that was really good, but hated by those who are really evil.

Remember when the two towers in New York were crashed into by the planes, and the celebrations that occurred in some countries, because of the deaths of nearly 3000 people? This then is very similar. With no harm done to anyone by the victims, celebrations will spontaneously erupt when they are killed.

Such is the nature of evil and people who reject truth, God, Christ and His message, and His messengers.

To evil people, truth is a nuisance and is annoying to their everyday life.

9 And [kai] they [blepo] of [ek] the people [laos] and [kai] kindreds [phule] and [kai] tongues [glossa] and [kai] nations [ethnos] shall see [blepo] their [autos] dead bodies [ptoma] three [treis] days [hemera] and [kai] an half, [hemisu] and [kai] shall [aphiemi] not [ou] suffer [aphiemi] their [autos] dead bodies [ptoma] to be put [tithemi] in [eis] graves. [mnema] KJV-Interlinear

9 And those from the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations will look at their dead bodies for three and a half days, and will not permit their dead bodies to be laid in a tomb. NASB

The phrase, they of the people, indicates that some of the people, but not all of the people. And these would refer to the people that were local to the city in which the two witnesses were killed.

These people will represent many nations and cultures and languages. They will be in Jerusalem for whatever reasons that brought them there, but obviously they will see and be aware of the two witnesses, since the two will have been preaching for 1260 days, or about three-and-a-half-years.

Their ministry will have attracted the curiosity of people from all over the world, who will come to the city to see them in person. After all, these two men will have been performing miracles and will have demonstrated powers of defense against attackers and so forth.

And, rather than coming to the city to hear their message, people will come to see their miracles. And, perhaps since this prophecy of their demise could easily be known to everyone, then people may well have come to see them get killed, and/or even be raised back to life.

The next verse shows the reaction that folks will have when that occurs.

The two witnesses, when they are killed, will be left lying in the street where they are killed. People will come to gawk at them. And no one will try to bury them. No one will be allowed to bury them. They will lay there for three-and-a-half-days.

And even if people know of their predicted deaths, and should also know of their being raised back to life, most folks choose to believe and remember only what they want to believe and remember.

Many folks unfortunately are very selective about things in life, and live life only for the entertainment value of events, never learning from them.

The power of their message was not sufficient to get folks to believe in Christ. The power of the many judgments that will have occurred during that same timeframe, will not be sufficient to get people to believe in Christ. And yet there will still be some who will believe, but only if something even more threatening occurs. And that something, is coming up in the next couple of verses.
