Romans 7:25

Romans 7:25

25 I thank [eucharisteo] God [theos] through [dia] Jesus [Iesous] Christ [Christos] our [hemon] Lord [kurios]. So then [ara] [oun] with the mind [nous] I [ego] myself [autos] serve [men] [douleuo] the law [nomos] of God [theos]; but [de] with the flesh [sarx] the law [nomos] of sin [hamartia].   KJV-Interlinear

25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. ESV

We already know, that we are made up of body and soul. And our third component is the spirit, which we acquire instantly at the moment we believe in Christ. We call that acquisition of the human spirit, being born again.

We also know from the study of Romans, that the body that we are born with is infected with something which we call the sin nature. And that sin nature has a powerful effect and influence over our body, which overflows into the influence of our mind.

If we don’t have something else counteracting that influence, then we’re in total slavery and helplessness, and subject to the power of the sin nature within us.

However, Bible doctrine, provides that counteracting influence.

We have to learn Bible doctrine, in order to possess the ability to counteract the influence of the sin nature.

Therefore, by learning Bible doctrine, and advancing in our spiritual life, then we are able to serve God, through our mind, or through what we know because of Bible doctrine learned.

At the same time in this life, in this world, our physical body is still subject to the influence of the sin nature. And that influence is unyielding and continues moment by moment day and night, throughout our entire life.

Therefore, we have to be on the alert, and on our guard, so that the sin nature will not overcome and overwhelm us, and sweep us back into the dark ages, as it were.

Thus, the need for a daily Bible study, in order to learn Bible doctrine, but more important, in order to stay within the sphere of the spiritual life, so as to counteract the sphere of the sin nature life.

The environment of the spiritual life, which is obtained through confession of sin to God the Father, provides the environment of safety and security, and a place where the sin nature cannot get to you.

Learning Bible doctrine, is much, much more than merely learning Bible stories. Learning Bible doctrine, and living in the spiritual sphere, which we call fellowship, provides you with an environment for growth and fulfillment, not to mention a place of safety.

Jesus Christ is God. Jesus Christ is the written word of God. He has magnified His word above His name, which simply means, that learning Bible doctrine is our highest priority, and our means of advancing in fulfilling our life, and completing our relationship with God through Christ.

Study [by instruction],

If you can learn and see your full meaning and purpose in life,
Then you can believe in Christ, learn Bible doctrine, and grow far beyond the potential that God has prepared for you.

Romans 7:24

Romans 7:24

24 O wretched [talaiporos] man [anthropos] that I am [ego]! who [tis] shall deliver [rhoumai] me [me] from [ek] the body [soma] of this [toutou] death [thanatos]?   KJV-Interlinear

24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? ESV

Therefore, Paul makes a statement, that he, as with us all, is a wretched man. The word wretched, refers to a miserable person, or one who is under a continual trial of duress and pressure and strain and stress, and so forth.

This condition exists the entire duration of an individual’s life in this world.

As we’ve already seen, the cause of this wretchedness, is the sin nature that resides within each one of us, within our physical bodies.

Note, that the sin nature does not reside within your soul, but the sin nature does influence and put pressure on your thoughts and decisions.

And within the essence of ourselves, there is no means whatsoever, to defend ourselves, or to fight the sin nature, or to free ourselves from the sin nature.

Therefore, the question, who will deliver us from the sin nature?

And of course in the next verse Paul reveals that who, who is Jesus Christ.

So one of the important principles to learn from this passage, is that apart from Jesus Christ there is no way, and no method, and nothing that can separate us from the sin nature and its destructive influence.

Therefore, all of the good intentions, all of the invented methods and philosophies of exercise or diet or even positive thinking, none of these will help to eliminate or even stabilize the function of the sin nature within us.

There is only one source of that stability, and one source of that freedom, and that source is Jesus Christ.

And you gain access to that source, when you believe in Christ, which we call salvation. But, you gain function of that source when you grow up in Christ, which we call spiritual growth, and that comes by means of learning Bible doctrine on a daily basis.

Romans 7:23

Romans 7:23

23 But [de] I see [blepo] another [heteros] law [nomos] in [en] my [mou] members [melos], warring against [antistrateuomai] the law [nomos] of my [mou] mind [nous], and [kai] bringing [aichmalotizo] me [me] into captivity [aichmalotizo] to the law [nomos] of sin [hamartia] which [ho] is [on] in [en] my [mou] members [melos].   KJV-Interlinear

23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. ESV

Paul describes two warring factions that exist within each person. The law within the members, refers to the law of sin that resides within the physical body of the individual.

The law of the mind, refers to the individual’s ability to decide. We typically call this a person’s volition.

When there is no other mechanism to combat sin, then the sin nature that resides within the physical body, will drive the individuals decisions toward sin.

When there is a mechanism available to combat sin, namely Bible doctrine, which when learned is resident within the soul of the individual, then the individual has the ability to choose against sin, based on discernment and understanding that comes to the individual as a result of learning Bible doctrine.

However, Bible doctrine, is only available to believers only. Believers are those individuals who have believed in Christ.

While we all reside in our physical bodies, we are in a trap, or a prison, being held captive to the sin nature. And we cannot escape that captivity until and unless we believe in Christ, and therefore have salvation, which gives us temporary release while still in this life. And then eventually permanent release when we leave this world, leaving our physical body behind.

The only means of correction or perfection that a person can attain, is by means of faith in Christ, and then eventually leaving this world, and leaving the corruption of the physical body, namely the sin nature, behind.

There is no method or means of gaining perfection while in this world.

We cannot make ourselves perfect.
We cannot make this world perfect.

Sin and the sin nature, are the principal ingredients of the disintegration and destruction of this world and of life in general.

Romans 7:22

22 For [gar] I delight [sunedomai] in the law [nomos] of God [theos] after [kata] the inward [eso] man [anthropos]:   KJV-Interlinear

22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, ESV

The delighting in the law of God, is a reference to learning Bible doctrine. This is what most people do not do. And that is why they fail.

Learning Bible doctrine, and inculcating it into your soul, making it an integral part of your inner being, produces completion of your soul, completion of your life, completion of your meaning and purpose.

Most people cannot say, in truth, I delight in the law of God, because they don’t learn Bible doctrine, because they don’t pursue it or seek it out, therefore they don’t know it, therefore cannot delight in something that is unknown.

If you do not learn something, it cannot be a part of your inner being.

What you think is what you are. And the content of your soul determines what you think. And if you don’t learn Bible doctrine, then it does not exist within your soul.

The highest priority in life, above everything else, is to learn Bible doctrine by means of instruction, to live in fellowship, and advance in your spiritual life to spiritual maturity.

Of all of the minorities that exist in this world, spiritually mature Christians, are the smallest in number, and the most significant of minorities, in all of human history.

Any other consideration of the use of the word minority, is misdirected, self-serving, and irrelevant.

What is important in life, is advancing to spiritual maturity by means of learning Bible doctrine through instruction, on a daily basis. And that is available to anyone and everyone that has a desire to pursue it.

Romans 7:21

21 I find [heurisko] then [ara] a law [nomos], that [hoti], when I [emoi] would [thelo] do [poieo] good [kalos], evil [kakos] is present [parakeimai] with me [emoi].   KJV-Interlinear

21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. ESV

Mans own works cannot succeed, because the sin nature within, impedes in that effort. And not only does the sin nature impede, but also throws hypocritical barriers in our way.

Far too often our focus is on the specks in others, while we ignore the stone in our own eyes.

We judge or are opinionated against others, while we ignore our own faults.
We make issue over things of insignificance, while disregarding the real priorities of life.

We take exception as to what others say, or how they say it, while ignoring our obligation to learn Bible doctrine and grow up in our spiritual life.
We take exception as to how others dress or look, while ignoring our obligation to learn Bible doctrine and grow up in our spiritual life.
We take exception as to how others spend their money, while ignoring our obligation to learn Bible doctrine and grow up in our own spiritual life.
We take exception as to how others live or choose to live their life, while ignoring our own obligation to learn Bible doctrine and grow up in our spiritual life.
We invent standards for our own life, and try to impose them on others, while ignoring our obligation to learn Bible doctrine and grow up in our spiritual life.
We pursue a disregard for our obligations and responsibilities of life, while ignoring our obligation to learn Bible doctrine and grow up in our spiritual life.

And in case you don’t see a pattern, we as human beings, have a tendency to focus on the many and various details of life, that are, in reality, insignificant, while we tend to ignore the one true thing in life, that is significant, and critical to our life now, and to our life in eternity.

The Bible, never once instructs us as to how we should live our life, nor even as to how we should think, but the Bible does instruct us to learn Bible doctrine, and thereby to guide our life by means of the doctrine that we learn, from instruction.

The world population is approaching 8 billion people. Since Adam and Eve, probably well over a trillion people have been born into this world, lived their life, and died.

Each and every person has been and is a unique individual. All have grown up in dozens and dozens and dozens of different cultures. All have been numbered among different skin colors. All have learned from the thousands of different languages that have existed. All have had different talents and abilities.

But the only thing in common to everyone since Adam and Eve, has been Bible doctrine, which was made available verbally in the beginning, and in writing as we have it today.

What people say and think and do and how they live their life is irrelevant.

The ancient patriarchs, had multiple wives and mistresses, and yet they were not condemned. Great men of the Bible sinned and failed in every imaginable way, and yet they were not condemned.

It is not what you do in life, because of the misdirection of the sin nature, it is how you redirect your life by means of learning Bible doctrine and advancing and living within your spiritual life, that is important.

Seeking a life of perfection, or seeking a world of perfection, or attempting to produce perfection, or even expecting perfection as you see it, is a misdirected effort.

The important thing in life, is to pursue a daily Bible study, to live in fellowship, and to advance in your spiritual life. And this is what the great people of the Bible did, in spite of their failures. And that is why they succeeded.

Romans 7:20

20 Now [de] if [ei] [hos] I do [poieo] that [touto] I [ego] would [thelo] not [ou], it is no more [eti] [ouketi] I [ego] that do [katergazomai] it [autos], but [alla] sin [hamartia] that dwelleth [oikeo] in [en] me [emoi].   KJV-Interlinear

20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. ESV

This verse continues the repetitive instruction, of the good versus evil conflict, that resides within each and every individual.

It does not provide for a scapegoat, nor for a justification or excuse of doing the things that we do.

But it does further emphasize the power of sin and its influence over us, such that if we have no resources to combat sin, namely Bible doctrine in the soul, then that sin is more powerful than our resolve.

This principle makes it clear that there is no philosophy, no method, no approach, no resource within the human experience, that will allow us to combat sin and evil, and come out a winner. Defeating sin on our own, is an impossibility.

You cannot rid yourself of it by means of any kind of special food diet.
You cannot rid yourself of it by means of any kind of exercise.
You cannot rid yourself of it by means of any kind of dedication to philosophy, or religion.
You cannot rid yourself of it by means of science, or logic, or human reason.

When the body is tainted, and headed for corruption, it is impossible to terminate or reverse that corruption.

Since there is nothing within the human realm for combating sin and evil and death, then we have to look outside the human realm, for the solution.

And that solution of course is faith in Christ for salvation, a daily study and Bible doctrine for the development of spiritual resources, and the consistency of functioning within the spiritual life, every day, throughout ones entire life.

Even still, believers are still subject to the influences of sin.

But what we do have, is salvation, and when we leave this world, then all of that old stuff will be left behind.

Romans 7:19

19 For [gar] [hos] the good [agathos] that I would [thelo] I do [poieo] not [ou]: but [alla] the evil [kakos] which [hos] I would [thelo] not [ou], that [touto] I do [prasso].   KJV-Interlinear

19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. ESV

Each and every one of us carries the proof of Adams fall, within and throughout the very fabric of our physical bodies. That is where the sin nature resides.

The sin nature does not reside in the soul, because upon death, the soul and spirit leave the body and go face-to-face with the Lord in heaven. Sin does not travel with the soul into heaven, but remains behind to decay with the physical body.

Thus with this repetition of instruction from Paul, we see the inner conflict within ourselves, between sin on the one hand, and good on the other hand. The determining factor as to which wins out, resides in the soul, where the individual makes decisions one way or the other.

Sin is extremely powerful, and when combined with the influence of the evil policy that Satan has imposed, then imprisonment within these chains of slavery, is virtually impossible for an individual to escape on their own.

We know within our soul, what is good and right, and what we should do, but the forces within our body drive us to the things that we should not do. And that encompasses all manner of sin throughout the broad spectrum of sin, from the simplest of sins, to the most extreme evils imaginable.

In this world now we have the restraint of Bible doctrine, and the indwelling of the spirit, which serves as a governor over sin, limiting it and preventing it from its fullest potential.

Even with this restraint, history has witnessed, what we would call, extremes in the exercise of evil within humanity.

But when the rapture occurs, and all restraint is removed from the world, and sin and evil are literally turned loose, then society will become witness to, and victims of, evils that are beyond imagination.

The only defense and protection against sin and evil, is Bible doctrine in the soul. And you have to engage in a daily study of Bible doctrine in order to get into your soul.

18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. ESV

Now remember that Paul is a Christian. He is a believer in Jesus Christ. But he is also describing that the sin nature remains within him, despite his Christian status.

Just because a person has believed in Christ and is therefore saved, does not mean the sin nature has become somehow nonexistent within the body.

Christians are just as easily susceptible to sin after salvation, as they were before salvation. Your volition decides which way you choose to lean.

The sin nature leaves an inherent weakness within the individual, that is impossible to overcome, on ones own.

But this should also make it clear, that self-perfection within the individual is also an impossibility.

You cannot eat the right things, you cannot exercise the right way, you cannot meditate in some certain way, as a means to ascending yourself from imperfection to perfection.

There is only one way to gain perfection in ones life, and that begins with faith in Christ for salvation, and learning Bible doctrine for spiritual muscle.

Romans 7:17

17 Now [nuni] then [de] it is no more [ouketi] I [ego] that do [katergazomai] it [autos], but [alla] sin [hamartia] that dwelleth [oikeo] in [en] me [emoi].   KJV-Interlinear

17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. ESV

This is one of the more abused passages, wherein people attempt to shed their responsibility, by blaming something or someone else for their own wrongdoing.

In Romans 8 and 1 Corinthians 3, we are likewise told that the spirit of God dwells in the Christian, which is in contrast to the statement here where sin is said to indwell the Christian.

What determines which one is in control, comes from your decisions. Therefore, it is the individual who is always responsible and held accountable for their own thoughts and actions.

Therefore, every Christian can say that he does not choose to do evil or bad things, but would prefer to do good things, however it is the sin nature and its strong influence, which leads him astray.

This fundamental truth of human nature, should end the argument as to whether man is naturally good or naturally bad.

And the answer is, that the inherent nature of man is to be bad and corrupt, because of the sin nature which indwells within him. But man also has volition, where he has the ability to make decisions for good or for bad.

Without truth or Bible doctrine within his soul, then the individual is at a disadvantage and is in effect a slave to the sin nature.

With Bible doctrine within the soul, if a person has in fact taken the time to learn Bible doctrine, then the individual is at an advantage over the sin nature, and has a much better ability to choose for good.

16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. ESV

As a slave to sin, we were under the full power and authority and control of sin, which is something that we do not want, but had no choice in the matter, and had to live with it.

Once we believed in Christ, we through off the shackles, from a positional point of view, and will have them permanently removed, when we leave this world.

The principle that Paul has already made, regarding whether or not the law is itself good or evil, is supported here in this verse, by the very attitude of people in general, which is a reference to slaves, being trapped in their slavery, and not liking it.

Therefore, as sinners we commit sins, even though we don’t like that, and then by default, that attitude places us in agreement with the law, which defines the perfect or sin free life, which is what we really want.

The law here, is a general phrase referring to the principle of truth, but also is in reference to the Mosaic law, as was the common use of that phrase, back in Paul’s day.

As we studied before, if there was no law, then there would be no violation. But since there is a law, then we can identify what is and is not a violation. And by so doing, we can identify what is good and not good, what is preferable and not preferable.

And by default, doing something that we don’t want to do, namely sin, likewise identifies us with a preference that the law defines.

So the summary of this verse is, that the law identifies and describes and defines sin.

And our status in this life, being bound by the sin nature within our physical body, causes us to do things, namely sin, that we otherwise would prefer not to do.

Again, the moral of this study is that, sin is powerful. And on our own we are powerless against it. The only way out of it, is by means of something or someone else, which is Jesus Christ, for salvation, and Bible doctrine, for our functional spiritual life.
