Romans 6:22

22 But [de] now [nuni] being made free [eleutheroo] from [apo] sin [hamartia], and [de] become servants [douloo] to God [theos], ye have [echo] your [humon] fruit [karpos] unto [eis] holiness [hagiasmos], and [de] the end [telos] everlasting [aionios] life [zoe].   KJV-Interlinear

22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.  ESV

The phrase, everlasting life, stands in stark contrast to the word for, death, from the previous verse. Both terms stand for equal duration.

Everlasting life, by definition, means eternal life.

And by the same token, death of an equal duration, means eternal death.

Those who obey the terms for life, receive the gift of eternal life.

Those who are disobedient to the terms for life, receive the curse of eternal death.

The terms for life, come by way of faith. The terms for death, reject faith, and depend entirely on the works of the individual.

The works of the individual, are wrapped up in the concept which we call sin. This is mans effort to achieve his own salvation, by means of his own work, presuming that God will accept mans effort.

Salvation by faith, rejects man’s work, and accepts only Gods work.

Therefore, eternal death, which is based on the rejection of faith, results solely from the effort of mans works.

Since Jesus Christ went to the cross and paid the price for all sin, then sin having been paid in full, is not the basis for eternal condemnation. However, mans rejection of faith, means that he is relying on the effort of sin, which is human works, and that becomes the basis of eternal condemnation.

The two contrasting methods for obtaining salvation, are mans works, and Gods works.

Faith relies on Gods work, for which man receives no credit, but is the means of salvation as a gift from God to man, and is received by man by means of faith.

The fruit, or production, as it were, of faith, is eternal life.

The fruit, or the production of the sin nature, as it were, is eternal condemnation.

Just as eternal life is eternal and permanent, and not temporary, so too, eternal condemnation is not temporary, but is permanent.

Romans 6:21

21 But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.  ESV

The out of fellowship, master, which we refer to as the sin nature, is a tyrant master. When we become slaves to sin, we stop being our own masters. We lose self-command, we lose self-willpower, we lose self-decision, we lose character, we lose dignity, and all of the while, we are under the false impression that we are free and independent and actually profiting from this chosen pattern of life.

And then sooner or later we discover that sin is a very poor paymaster, and anything that is gained, is temporary, and when we finally come to the end of our life, we come face-to-face with the real and final paycheck, which is death.

And death here, is the final end of that pattern of life which was pursued because of its enticements and pleasures, which are replaced with a sudden realization that the expected benefit, or pay, or profit, never really existed at all.

In effect, the person pursuing life under the rule of the sin nature, is doing nothing more than working for a cruel master, and receiving no pay for his effort.

The Bible typically refers to the fruit of the sin nature, as wood, hay, and stubble.

There are two forms of fruit that originate from the sin nature. The first, is human good, which is basically all good that is performed while out of fellowship or outside of the spiritual life, and the second, is sin, which spans a wide spectrum from asceticism to lasciviousness, and of course includes all criminal activity.

All of the sin nature production, comes with a collective value of zero.

Therefore, living out of fellowship, provides no gain, no reward, no profit, no pay, no benefit of any kind. The only result is that of a wasted life.

The only true benefit or pay or reward or profit, etc., results from a life that is lived, in fellowship. And that is a benefit that is exclusive only to believers in Christ, because one has to be saved in order to have a spiritual life in the first place, and one has to confess regularly to God the Father, in order to be in fellowship, and therefore have a functioning and productive spiritual life.

Gold, silver, and precious stones, are the descriptive terms of the intrinsic value of spiritual life production. And just as gold and diamonds are almost infinitely more valuable than straw, then so too, the production of the spiritual life, is infinitely more valuable than the production of the sin nature.

It is infinitely more advantageous to be a believer in Christ, and live within the sphere of a productive spiritual life, than to ignore Christ and live within the sphere of the sin nature.

Romans 6:20

20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.  ESV

Life under the sin nature, and life under spiritual realm, are mutually exclusive. They do not crossover or co-mingle. They are separate and apart. You are either living under the control and influence of the sin nature, or you are living under the control and influence of the spiritual life.

Paul clarifies that, in this verse.

The word for servant, doulos, literally means slave or bondage. That slavery or bondage could be either involuntary, as in the case of an unbeliever, or it could be voluntary as in the case of the believer who is out of fellowship.

Nevertheless, when you are under the rule of the sin nature, you are not under the rule of righteousness or the spiritual life.

For unbelievers, or those who have not believed in Christ and therefore, are not saved, their life is governed by the laws of sin.

And as we have already studied, when you are under the law of sin, you have only two choices to look to, in order to get out from under that law of sin. The first choice, is to do everything yourself, namely works, but this is a false option, and only ends in failure.

The second option, is that of faith in Christ. This is the only option that does work, which gets you out from under the law of sin, and into the sphere of the law of Christ, which is grace.

As an unbeliever, you do not have the law of Christ working for you. You have to first believe in Christ, and therefore become a believer, or a Christian, as it were, in order to leave the law of sin, and then enter into the law of Christ, which is the law of righteousness.

As a believer, you are under the sphere of the law of Christ, with respect to salvation.

However, with respect to your functioning spiritual life, this same principle applies with respect to your being in fellowship, or out of fellowship.

As a believer, when you commit a sin, you are out of fellowship, and your spiritual life does not function as it should.

As a believer, when you confess your sin, then you are back in fellowship, and your spiritual life functions properly as it should.

Again, being in fellowship or out of fellowship, are mutually exclusive environments. You are either in one or the other, but never both at the same time.

19 I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.  ESV

People are incapable of understanding spiritual concepts, especially when they have a weak or modest desire and low motivation for learning spiritual concepts. Therefore, in order to overcome this self-imposed handicap, parables or illustrations which are drawn from common day-to-day life, are used in order to teach spiritual concepts.

Infirmity of the flesh, refers to the weakness or feebleness of one’s ability to understand.

Remember, there are two environments in which you can live your life.

The first environment is that of the sin nature, which establishes and promotes an inherent weakness, both physical and mental, for living and functioning within ones life. Terms such as darkness or fog, are used to describe human weaknesses and inability to understand, perceive, and connect with reality.

The second environment is that of the spiritual life, which establishes and promotes inherent strengths, both physical and mental, for living and functioning within ones life. Terms such is light or discernment, are used to describe human abilities to see and perceive reality, as it really is.

The infirmity of the flesh, refers to the weaknesses established within the sin nature environment, which prevents understanding, and in order to overcome that barrier, illustrations from common day-to-day life are used to illustrate spiritual concepts.

Paul has been using the master and slave relationship, to describe our limitations and restrictions that we face in life.

Under the sin nature, which is a life we had apart from salvation, we were severely restricted, with no rights whatsoever.

And under that sin nature environment, we lived within the rules of the sin nature, with our only capability was that of producing sin. Here, sin refers to every thought and action that occurs within the sin nature environment. And so the phrase, slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, simply describes the trap of the sin nature environment. In other words, we are trapped within the sin environment, and therefore, you can only produce sin.

Furthermore, when you are living within the sin nature environment, and think nothing of it, or do not know any better, then your life within that environment, seems natural, and you actively promote and pursue thoughts and activities within that environment.

This is why, false religions, for example, become so successful with a dedicated following of people.

On the other hand, when saved, then you have an opportunity to escape the sin nature environment, and live within the spiritual life environment. And having that better opportunity, as Paul states here, you should pursue that spiritual life with equal or more enthusiasm, and determination, then you did with the former environment.

And this is where Christianity falters.

Most Christians, do not understand Christianity, because they do not learn the differences between these two patterns of life. And the learning is lacking, because the desire to learn is lacking.

Lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, is the same as failure leading to more failure, or loss leading to more loss, or nothingness leading to more nothingness.

Righteousness leading to sanctification, describes the spiritual life leading to spiritual growth. And growth in the spiritual life can only occur when you pursue it within the framework of the spiritual life. Namely, confession to gain access to the spiritual environment which we call fellowship, and a daily study of Bible doctrine within that fellowship sphere, in order to learn and understand, and then application of that understanding, which is your spiritual production, which promotes spiritual growth.

And this, results in the spiritual construction of your soul, and the enhancement of your entire existence. And that is, or should be, your objective and goal in life, so that you can have the greatest meaning and purpose of your life, for your life, for all of eternity.

Romans 6:18

18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.  ESV

God is the sovereign power and authority over all of creation and beyond. In order to exist within creation, you have to have a relationship with God. Without God, nothing exists. Without a relationship with God, you cannot exist within the realm of God. Therefore, you need some mechanism for establishing a relationship with God in order to live eternally with Him. Without that relationship, you will live in an existence without God, which we commonly call the Lake of Fire. Therefore, salvation is required in order to establish a relationship with God.

When you were born into this world, you are born physically alive and spiritually dead.

As such, you were born under the master of sin, and without a relationship with God.

When you were born, Adams original sin was imputed genetically into your body. And though you cannot be condemned because of someone else’s sin, namely Adam, however, as you grew up and became accountable for your thoughts and actions, your personal sins made you accountable to sin, which sealed the foundation for your eternal condemnation.

Being condemned, and needing a relationship with God, you had only two options.

First, you can try to correct your situation yourself, and somehow gain Gods approval and acceptance.

Second, you could let God correct your situation, and believe in His work, and therefore gain Gods approval and acceptance.

Under the first option, you would have to live a perfect life. Moses wrote down all of the perfect life requirements, with all of the thou shalt not’s, and, if you could fulfill all of these requirements, then you would be perfect, as God is perfect, and therefore would have an automatic relationship with God, at His level.

However, sin is the master, and no one is capable of living their own perfect life. Therefore, under sin, and not being able to live the perfect life, you are condemned.

Under the second option, all of the work is placed in Gods hands. God came up with a plan, wherein the second person of the Trinity, who has the title Son of God, and who we know as Jesus Christ, was born into this world as a man, lived the perfect life, accepted upon Himself, the punishment for the sins of all of humanity, and in effect provided us with a solution to our eternal predicament.

Having done this work, God gave us the gift of salvation, wherein all we have to do is believe in Christ and His work, and therefore possess the salvation that is necessary to have a relationship with God, and simultaneously obtain eternal life.

Faith in Christ, sets us free from the bondage of sin.

Being free from sin, we are no longer under the stringent requirements of sin. In other words, we are not obligated to live a perfect life in order to obtain salvation, which none of us can do anyway.

By faith, we are no longer slaves of sin, we are now servants of righteousness. Righteousness being that perfect life that we no longer have to work for, because Gods righteousness was given to us as a gift when we believed in Christ.

Under the law of sin, you are expected to live the perfect life, which is typically called human works.

Under the law of Christ, you are expected to live by grace, which is Gods favor, which is Gods gift.

Mans works are not a part of the law of Christ. God did all of the work, and God receives all of the credit. We receive the benefit of that work, by means of faith, not from our own works.

Romans 6:17

17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,  ESV

Slavery to freedom by means of instruction. And the thanks for that belongs only to God, through Christ.

Every person who has ever been born alive, was born into sin, because of the inherited Adams original sin, and then became chained to sin as a slave by means of individual decisions to commit sins.

The word for servant, indicates a bondage, or an absolute slavery in which the slave has no say whatsoever, over his own life. And sin is a harsh master, who would destroy you totally and completely without batting an eye.

Obedient from the heart, is a phrase that describes your initial decision to believe in Christ, which removed those chains of slavery from your life.

The standard of teaching, refers to instruction.

We all have to learn Bible doctrine, whether we admit it or not. But, through positive volition we decide to listen, and study, and learn. And that process further enhances our individual life, away from the drawbacks to our spiritual life that the sin nature tries to impose on us.

Delivered to you, is a reference to the instruction in Bible doctrine that you hear, when you are interested, and actively pursue on a day-to-day basis.

Christ went to the cross and did the work of salvation in our behalf.

We listen and learn of the gospel, and make a conscious decision to believe, which gains us our salvation, and ultimate freedom from sin.

But life does not end at the moment of salvation. It continues on, as does instruction on a daily basis, so that we can continue the completion process of our otherwise incomplete life.

Bible doctrine in the soul, is the foundation and building material for the completion of the structure of our soul.

Obedience from the heart, is our willingness to listen, and to learn, and therefore to advance within our spiritual life.

And in all of this, we have no credit to ourselves, but all the credit goes to God, in all aspects of the spiritual process, and our spiritual life.

Romans 6:16

16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?  ESV

Slavery in ancient times, whether voluntary or involuntary, was rigid, and gave the master over the slave, an absolute right in all matters concerning that slave.

In the reality of creation, there are only two possible masters.

The first, is sin, and second is God. There is no third choice, and no one can be a master over themselves.

God represents truth, and sin represents all that is false.

If you dedicate yourself and pursue truth, then you are a servant of God. But that means you have to obey God, which means you have to obey all of His mandates. And saying it does not make it so. Your thoughts and actions testify as to the reality of your obedience, or lack of it.

If you do not dedicate yourself to truth, then by default you are a servant of sin. Sin represents all that is not truth.

You cannot serve two masters. Sin will take you as a slave no matter what you say or think or do. However God, will not accept you as a servant, unless you are completely obedient.

Slavery in the ancient world, gave the slave no rights, and expected absolute obedience to the master.

Therefore, there is no compromise, there is no, a little of this or a little of that. Slavery or service is an all or nothing arrangement. And in the arrangement you have no say as to the rules of the arrangement.

Disregard or indifference toward God, or trying to define your own rules, and certainly disobedience by ignoring the mandates which are clearly stated in the Bible, automatically place you under the service of sin.

We are all sinners of course, and we all fail from time to time. But the pattern of decisions that you make in your day-to-day life, determines your course in life.

The spiritually advancing believer, will fail from time to time. However, the pattern of obedience, determines the believers path, despite an occasional stumble.

The believer who is inconsistent within their spiritual life, who pretends or plays games with appearances for the sake of others to see, is in reality obedient to sin, and going nowhere in the spiritual life.

Sin leads to death. And death is a separation from something. And in this case the pattern of sin becomes a separation from ones spiritual life, and the completion of oneself. So, the disregard of the spiritual life, means you’re going nowhere, and you will end up with nothing. Which is just about what happens in death.

Righteousness, on the other hand, is the concept of pursuing ones spiritual life, by means of obedience to Gods mandates, which stated in the simplest form, means consistent confession for the purpose of fellowship, consistent daily Bible study for the purpose of learning, and consistent application of Bible doctrine for the purpose of enhancing ones spiritual growth.

In sin, you do nothing and you gain nothing.

In righteousness, you study, listen, and learn daily, and you grow and you can gain everything.

Romans 6:15

15 What [tis] then [oun]? shall we sin [hamartano], because [hoti] we are [esmen] not [ou] under [hupo] the law [nomos], but [alla] under [hupo] grace [charis]? God forbid [me] [ginomai].   KJV-Interlinear

15 What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!  ESV

With freedom, comes responsibility and obligation. Just because we are free from sin with respect to our salvation, does not give us the right to pursue a life of sin. There are repercussions with respect to the quality of our life.

Jesus Christ went to the cross, and there He paid the price for sin. That price, or punishment, was what was accomplished on the cross. Forgiveness, was not a part of that package.

Forgiveness requires a recognition of ones fault, and the admission of that fault to God the Father. Thus we have the principle of confession. And this is taught in 1 John 1:9, which states if we confess our sins, then He forgives, etc.

The very first time we believed in Christ, that faith belief was automatically accompanied by the recognition of our sinfulness, and the need for a Savior. With salvation, we were automatically entered into fellowship with God.

After salvation, of course our life continues, and we commit sins, which removes us from fellowship with God. In order to recover that fellowship, we confess our sins. And that is a repetitive routine that we are mandated to abide by day by day throughout the rest of our life while we are here in this world.

The state of being in fellowship, is the environment in which our spiritual life functions.

And to complete our self, we need to be in fellowship while we pursue our spiritual life, through our daily study and application of Bible doctrine.

To sin, and therefore be out of fellowship, would prevent that advancement within the spiritual life.

Therefore, salvation does not give us the right to do anything we want, but more so places the responsibility and obligation on us for avoiding sin, and advancing in our spiritual life toward spiritual maturity.

14 For [gar] sin [hamartia] shall [kurieuo] not [ou] have dominion over [kurieuo] you [humon]: for [gar] ye are [este] not [ou] under [hupo] the law [nomos], but [alla] under [hupo] grace [charis].  KJV-Interlinear

14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.  ESV

There are two laws in existence, only two laws.  You are either under the Mosaic law, or you are under the law of Christ.  And most people, are clueless as to what each means because they refuse to follow a study that teaches what they mean and the differences between the two.  They are two phrases that are easy to recite, but are generally not understood.

God is perfect, and God is the creator and owner of all that is. God is the glue that holds all of creation together. Without God, there would be no creation. There would be nothing.

To exist and live with God for all of eternity, one has to be perfect, as God is perfect.

Man is not perfect. We have all sinned, we have all failed, and therefore, in order to gain perfection, we have to do it ourselves, or have someone else do it for us.

The Mosaic law, and specifically the Ten Commandments, spell out the criteria for being perfect. But the Mosaic law, simultaneously spells out the criteria for doom.

No created being, is capable of keeping the Ten Commandments, therefore to try to live under the law, is a pursuit that will fail.

The law of Christ, is the law of grace.

Christ did all of the work to establish perfection for humanity, and Christ gets all of the credit. To live under the law of Christ, you simply believe in Jesus Christ. And that faith removes you from the law of Moses, which is nothing more than a law of self-effort, and places you under the law of Christ, which is His effort, not yours.

The grace provision, is that He did all of the work for salvation, and you did nothing except believe in Jesus Christ.

There is no merit to you, for believing, since there is no work involved in your believing. Jesus Christ did all of the work, and He deserves all of the credit.

So the contrast is in who does the work and who gets the credit.

To reject Jesus Christ, means that you believe that your own effort can accomplish salvation. And your own effort places you up against the Mosaic law, which clearly demonstrates that you are incapable of living a perfect life.

To believe in Jesus Christ, means that you look to Him for the requirements of salvation, and not to yourself.

Since you have believed in Christ, then sin is no longer relevant in your life with regard to salvation. And, being under grace, then sin has no further power over you, to prevent your salvation. Jesus Christ has already solved that, and eliminated sin as an issue.

Therefore, by believing in Christ, through faith, your eternal life is totally and completely in His hands, and no longer in the hands of anything or anyone else.

That is eternal security.

Once you have believed in Christ, you cannot turn back the clock and undo your belief. Once you have had a thought, you cannot undo that thought. It has already occurred.

Faith in Christ, is permanent, is irreversible, cannot be undone or changed. Faith is the ultimate guarantee, which was given to you by God, as a gift. And that is grace.

13 Neither [mede] yield ye [paristemi] your [humon] members [melos] as instruments [hoplon] of unrighteousness [adikia] unto sin [hamartia]: but [alla] yield [paristemi] yourselves [heautou] unto God [theos], as [hos] those that are alive [zao] from [ek] the dead [nekros], and [kai] your [humon] members [melos] as instruments [hoplon] of righteousness [dikaiosune] unto God [theos].  KJV-Interlinear

13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.  ESV

Your body has physical urges such as hunger, thirst, pain, lusts of various types and so forth, but your soul is where the real you, resides. What you think is what you are.

And what you think, should be what is in control of you, not your physical urges. Your mind should run your body, your body should not run your mind.

Therefore, do not yield, paristemi, which means to stand beside, to give preference, to aid, or to assist. Therefore, do not give in to the demands of your body, but rather give in or submit yourself, to the demands and the expectations of the spiritual life.

Likewise, bring your body along with you.

You have heard the phrase, did you have your head with you when you did that?

And of course it’s merely a funny quip, but the phrase has a lot of good common sense with it. In other words, think before you act. Or, act in accordance with how you think.

And needless to say, what you should be thinking is Bible doctrine.
