13 O spare [sha`ah] me, that I may recover strength [balag], before I go hence [yalak], and be no more.   KJV-Interlinear

13 Look away from me, that I may smile again, before I depart and am no more!” ESV

The Psalm concludes with the petition, requesting God to look away. This is in regard to redirecting His judgment or punishment elsewhere.

And since God’s punishment is redirected elsewhere, then that leaves the door open for blessing.

This is important during ones life, but especially at the end of ones life so that the individual can enjoy his last days and years under brighter and more cheerful circumstances.

And that is quite possibly the best retirement that a person can have.

Study [by instruction],

to show thyself approved [spiritually mature]

unto God,

a workman [student]

that need not be ashamed [ignorant],

rightly dividing [learning, understanding, discerning]

the word of truth [Bible doctrine].

12 Hear [shama`] my prayer [taphillah], O LORD [Yahovah], and give ear ['azan] unto my cry [shav`ah]; hold not thy peace [charash] at my tears [dim`ah]: for I am a stranger [ger] with thee, and a sojourner [towshab], as all my fathers ['ab] were.   KJV-Interlinear

12 “Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears! For I am a sojourner with you, a guest, like all my fathers. ESV

Often times, it takes great pressure or suffering, wherein our cries for help are so insufficient, that words can’t even describe. Even the deepest sorrows of the soul cannot find words of utterance.

But when the individual is fallen so low in their life, wherein their sorrows are no longer pretended, then God sees and hears the genuine difficulties that exist in the life.

Some people when they hit rock bottom, complain and criticize and blame.

Most people, who are normal people, will cry out to God for help, long before they hit rock bottom.

Among the many principles that we should learn, is that this world is not our permanent residence. We are mere travelers, strangers in this land we call earth. No one throughout all of human history, from Adam until now, and into the future, has had or ever will have, a permanent home in this world. 

Our real home is heaven.

To attempt the establishment of a permanent home here is for the fool. Everything in this world is temporary at best. Investing in the temporary, while ignoring the permanent, is not very smart.

Bible doctrine is permanent. Bible doctrine builds up and constructs the essence of your life. Bible doctrine is eternal and remains with you forever and forever. Bible doctrine is the gold mine and infinite treasure that you should be pursuing with all of your heart and mind.

And yet most people, ignore the treasure, and pursue the dust and stubble of this world. How smart is that?

11 When you discipline a man with rebukes for sin, you consume like a moth what is dear to him; surely all mankind is a mere breath! Selah ESV

Nothing shows the existence of a person as being nothing, like the discipline of God as it reveals, that nothingness.

Throughout our life, we adopt beliefs, we collect possessions, we develop attitudes, and all of them are for not.

When a moth gains access to beautiful clothing, it destroys that material slowly and quietly. A moth cares nothing for the beauty of the clothing, and has no concern for its value.

When confronted with genuine truth, which only comes from God, then everything that we hold near and dear, is revealed as having no value at all.

And until or unless, we are faced with Gods discipline, then we ourselves don’t see the worthlessness of our attitudes, of our non-truth beliefs, of the things that we possess, and even the way we perceive ourselves within the environment of society and this world.

Man is flesh and blood, man has phenomenal limitations. And yet in our arrogance we are blind and see nothing, until we are faced with the harsh realities of Gods reproof, of Gods correction, of God’s punishment.

Were it not for the corrections that God places before us, we would never see, nor even accept, the false that lies within us.

Just as a simple moth can make the most valuable and beautiful piece of material, useless, so too Gods correction can reveal the worthlessness and the futility of any and all things within this world.

10 Remove your stroke from me; I am spent by the hostility of your hand. ESV

The prayer to God the Father, for the removal of the problems and pressures of life, is a legitimate prayer, and request, to have difficulties removed altogether, or at least lessened, so as to make life a little more tolerable.

Consumed by the blow, speaks to the pressures of life, whatever they may be.

For all pressures, regardless of their nature, eat away at the core of your being, and reduce your outlook and quality of life.

Jesus Christ controls history. All prayer is directed toward God the Father, but it is Jesus Christ that executes all action in all existence of creation.

And that includes all aspects of your life. That is why we pray to the Father, in Christ’s name. And of course all prayer has to be prayed, while in fellowship.

Fellowship is the sphere, where the spiritual life functions, and where our relationship with God, is active.

The result of sin, is a consuming of your life. The same principle applies to creation, to the world, and to the individual.

Prior to sin, Adam and Eve, had everlasting life. That is not the same as eternal life.

But subsequent to sin, a limitation on life, and a limitation on the environment, and a limitation on everything in our world, came into being.

The only counter to sin, and its restrictions and limitations, is the enhancement of oneself by means of spiritual growth, by means of spiritual completion, by means of learning Bible doctrine.

Bible doctrine is the food and nourishment of the soul. And food and nourishment is something that we should consume daily, thus a daily Bible study.

Psalm 39:9

9 I was dumb ['alam], I opened [pathach] not my mouth [peh]; because thou didst [`asah] it.   KJV-Interlinear

9 I am mute; I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it. ESV

The complaints of the psalmist, are silenced. That is the meaning of the opening phrase, I was dumb, or in other words, I was caused to be silent.

At the beginning of this Psalm, the individual was complaining because he was overwhelmed by the pressures and troubles of life.

He realized that these troubles, and all troubles, came from sin, and that sin was accompanied by discipline, and that discipline is a result of God’s design.

And now in verse nine, the psalmist realizes the error of his complaint, and that the suffering that he was having in his life, was correct, and wise, and good.

We need to realize that all suffering, is not directly related to some sin we have committed, even though a great deal of suffering, results from our own thoughts and actions.

But too, a lot of suffering is simply because we live in this Devils world.

This is an imperfect world, which became imperfect as a result of sin.

Prior to Adam and Eve’s sin, they lived in a perfect garden. Subsequent to their sin, the state of the world deteriorated. And it has been deteriorating ever since.

Those who believe that saving the environment, or spreading brotherly love, might somehow restore the world to some sort of better place, are pursuing a belief that will never occur.

The only way to perfect the world, is to remove sin entirely. And man on his own, is incapable of accomplishing that. Only God can remove sin, and only God can restore the world.

In the meantime, we all have to face the sufferings that are caused by this world, as well as the sufferings that we bring on ourselves.

Complaining will not fix it, but Bible doctrine learned and understood, is the only way we have of living with, and surviving through, the flaws of this world, as well as our self.

Psalm 39:8

8 Deliver me from all my transgressions. Do not make me the scorn of the fool! ESV

The psalmist realizes, as we all should, that our sins are the source of all of our troubles. And that, if our sins are forgiven and removed, then logic dictates that our troubles likewise will be removed.

And therefore our first petition, to gain access to our spiritual life, is by means of our request for the pardoning of our sins, thus paving the way for God to remove our problems.

And this first petition, is what we call confession.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just, to forgive us of all our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. That is the method and means of restoring ourselves into fellowship with God, and into the sphere of a functioning spiritual life.

It is the individual who does not have a relationship with God, who is the fool.

Having a relationship with God is the simplest thing in the world. And not knowing it, and especially ignoring it, is the method and function of the fool.

A fool lives in evil. Evil is everything outside of the realm of God and truth and the spiritual life.

Evil is a reproach. And a fool who lives in evil, by default is a reproach to truth and everything in life.

Therefore, confessing one sins, resulting in the removal of those sins, in effect removes the reproach from ones life.

7 “And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you.  ESV

The psalmist has been filled with pressures of anxiety and depression, and unable to remain quiet any longer. He has seen himself as worthless, living in a hopeless world, amounting to nothing more than a shadow in his existence.

And now, he complains, what do I wait for?

He is beginning his turning to God realizing that waiting on the world, there is nothing in the world to bring about security or contentment or anything else for that matter. And so the question, implied, where does one find cheerful or comforting views in life?

When contemplating the world in ones pursuits, the course of things in life are nothing more than a shadow, and a mysterious and empty pursuit of the things in life, that are temporary, and seemingly have no permanent purpose.

And so the psalmist realizes that hope is not in the world, but hope lies within God. And, one’s access to God is by means of the written word. And in attaining access one has to learn the written word, namely by means of receiving instruction in a daily Bible study.

And only then, when a person wakes up, and knuckles down, and dedicates himself to the pursuit of learning about God and truth, through a daily study, will the eyes be opened, and the real hope, recognized.

Psalm 39:6

6 Surely every man ['iysh] walketh [halak] in a vain shew [tselem]: surely they are disquieted [hamah] in vain [hebel]: he heapeth up [tsabar] riches, and knoweth [yada`] not who shall gather ['acaph] them.   KJV-Interlinear

6 Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather! ESV

The complaining continues. The phrase vain shew, means shadow, or something that has an appearance, but has no substance.

And therefore life is compared to a shadow, where a person hustles through life, accumulating the things of this world, perhaps success, perhaps prosperity, perhaps wealth. But, all of that is nothing more than a shadow, or things that have no real substance, as far as eternity is concerned.

And just as a shadow goes away, when the light goes away, so also the things a person accumulates in life, disappear to them, when their light of life comes to an end.

And yet people hustle through life, knowing all the while that life will come to an end, and eternity will begin, and yet they ignore their own preparation for eternity.

And so they accumulate the things of this life and of this world, which things amount to nothing, instead of accumulating spiritual preparation, which is Bible doctrine, which has a value greater than everything in the world combined. And in so doing end up with nothing to show for their life.

And at the end of the person’s life, all that they have from this world, will go to someone else. Your possessions go to family, or perhaps to the government. But where they end up, and perhaps even squandered, the deceased will never know.

And when it all comes down to the end of life, the person who ignores Bible doctrine and their spiritual life, and pursues the things of this world, will have nothing at the end of their life, just as they have nothing during their life.

All things in this world are temporary, and therefore amount to nothing, because they do not continue beyond this life.

Only Bible doctrine in the soul, which means you have to learn it, has intrinsic value, which goes beyond this life, and into all of eternity.

Better to invest in eternal possessions, than in temporary possessions.

Psalm 39:5

5 Behold, thou hast made [nathan] my days [yowm] as an handbreadth [tephach]; and mine age [cheled] is as nothing before thee: verily every [kol] man ['adam] at his best state [natsab] is altogether [kol] vanity [hebel]. Selah [celah].   KJV-Interlinear

5 Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah ESV

In the previous verses, the psalmist complains that life is miserable, and wants to know how much longer life will be, for enduring that misery. And in this verse, the psalmist complains that life is too short, that it is meaningless, that it is so brief, making accomplishment virtually impossible.

Complaining, typically contradicts itself. The complainer wants one thing, and then he wants another.

And in this verse, the word for handbreadth, is a reference to the width of the hand, or meaning something that is very small in measurement.

The psalmist complains that his age, meaning his life, is the same as nothing.

And the general reference to man, meaning mankind on the whole, or the entire history of mankind, is likewise, nothing.

The implication is, why doesn’t God give longer lives, so that something can be accomplished.

But on the other hand, life is full of miserable things, one after another. And if a person had a longer life, then they would just have to suffer or endure, many more miserable things.

And besides the very first generations had lifespans of hundreds of years, and all it got them was a flood.

This is the Devils world, and as such, on a good day, the world can offer nothing more than miserable things.

And at some point in everyone’s life, the inconsistencies of complaining, will bubble to the surface, and one can only think that God will smile, upon hearing the flip-flop argument that a person generates by them self, while talking to them self, while complaining to God.

If life is miserable, and offers no meaning or purpose, then isn’t it possible that a person would look to God, and doctrine, and the spiritual life, to discover their real meaning and purpose?

After all, one who is complaining to God, and in effect is speaking to God, then by default recognizes that there is something beyond this life, and therefore something better.  So why not pursue it?

Psalm 39:4

4 LORD [Yahovah], make me to know [yada`] mine end [qets], and the measure [middah] of my days [yowm], what it is; that I may know [yada`] how frail [chadel] I am.   KJV-Interlinear

4 “O LORD, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am!  ESV

Similar to the words of Job, except that Job wanted to end his life, and thus end the misery, here the psalmist wants the misery to end, but begins by asking how much longer he will live, and therefore know how much longer he will have to put up with the suffering.

The measure of days, is a request of how much longer the psalmist has to live.

He is weary of life, and things are so bad, that nothing is expected from life, that all of life and all of existence is nothing more than emptiness. That is how low the emotional state of the psalmist has sunk.

He wants to know how much longer he will have to endure the suffering, because he expects no relief except through death. And he feels that for any length of time, he would welcome death in order to escape the burdens and suffering that he is enduring right now.

The term for frail, does not mean weakness, but in this verse means, to know when everything will eventually come to an end.

Sooner or later, in everyone’s life, the pressures will mount to such an extent, that there will seem to be no way out. And the emotions will build from within, to the point that death will seem to be the only way out.

But such is the nature of this Devils world.

Evil, if it has its chance, will push, and push, until you are at your wits end, and completely across the breaking point of life.

But as we will see, knowledge of Bible doctrine, is your best defense against the extremes of misery and depression.

Often times, venting to God, in private, or even in the privacy of your own thoughts, but better still, speaking aloud, if even only to the walls around you, helps you to sort through the pressures and anxieties and depressions that can be so overwhelming.

And sooner or later, you will realize that you can systematically talk your way through your problems, and see Gods perspective, and likewise see your own place in life, as well as the how’s and why’s, of what is going on.

Needless to say, knowledge of Bible doctrine, in situations like this, is extremely helpful. Because it gives you the resources with which to work through the greater pressures of life.

Lack of knowledge of Bible doctrine, means a lack of the inner resources or approaching difficulties, and in that case, often times those difficulties will bury you.

3 My heart became hot within me. As I mused, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: ESV

The psalmist describes the ever-increasing emotions that he is having because of the problems in his life, and the anxieties and pressures and depressions that were building up inside him.

The problems are not described, because there are many problems in the world, and this inner pressure can apply to anyone.

The term musing, describes the pondering or the meditation or the mental thinking activity that was going on in the mind, because of the problems.

The psalmist watches carefully over what he says, in the presence of others, fearing that he might blurt out something, perhaps even blaming God, and that would have a native impact on how others might perceive God.

The fire burned within, describes the ongoing and ever-increasing agitation within his mind, such that he reached the boiling point and was no longer able to remain quiet.

And so he speaks.

And the remainder the Psalm describes the words that are spoken, as he vented his pent-up feelings. And even though there was a feeling of murmuring and complaining, the psalmist seeks relief in stating his difficulties before God, but at same time seeking from God, direction and support.

2 I was dumb ['alam] with silence [duwmiyah], I held my peace [chashah], even from good [towb]; and my sorrow [ka'eb] was stirred [`akar].   KJV-Interlinear

2 I was mute and silent; I held my peace to no avail, and my distress grew worse.  ESV

David describes that his attempts to suppress his thoughts, or suppress his comments, resulted in even greater agitation and anguish within his own mind.

But the attempt to suppress, was in vain.

His inner distress, continued to grow worse and worse.

The suppression of negative thoughts or of complaining, gave him no avenue for venting, which venting was intended for other people, but would result in injury to them, perhaps even by perpetuating doubts and anger in others.

Ultimately, we will all have doubts. Ultimately we will all have angers within us.

And venting these feelings to others, is not the way to release our inner pressure.

But venting to God, is allowable, and is the preferred method of releasing inner frustrations and hostilities.

You can’t confuse God, and you cannot hurt God.

But often times, by venting toward God, you can work your way through the content of your frustration and anger, and when combined with a daily study and learning, you will be able to sort out and discover the answers that you need.

Often times, complaints lead to more complaints, lead to more questions. But complaining to God, even chewing Him out from time to time, gives you a place to take your frustration, and a way to sort out what is really on your mind.

1 To the chief Musician [natsach], even to Jeduthun [Yaduwthuwn], A Psalm [mizmowr] of David [David].

I said ['amar], I will take heed [shamar] to my ways [derek], that I sin [chata'] not with my tongue [lashown]: I will keep [shamar] my mouth [peh] with a bridle [machcowm], while the wicked [rasha`] is before me.   KJV-Interlinear

I said, “I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle, so long as the wicked are in my presence.”  ESV

The absolute worst thing that a person can do, is state an opinion, or make a comment, that is inaccurate, because of the lack of correct understanding, and therefore when others see or hear or read it, might cause concern or doubt or misunderstanding, which will lead them to wrong or delayed conclusions regarding Christianity and truth.

Is far better to remain silent, and keep your opinions to yourself, than to blurt out statements that can inadvertently bring harm to others.

The Bible says, be silent in church, and that applies to everyone.

There is only one instructor in a classroom, not two instructors.

There is only one chef in the kitchen, not two chefs.

And so it goes in life.

To be a student or to be a subordinate in any situation, and to presume authority without a right to that authority, does nothing but cause harm and disruption. And that always leads to harm for others, who might not have a clear picture of what is going on.

Later verses in this Psalm, will indicate deep perplexing doubts as to divine administration.

All too often, life is not clear. And all too often, life is not fair. And the how’s and why’s of it all can cause discouragement and anxiety and questioning as to why.

With a consistent and regular daily study, all questions are eventually answered. But until they are answered, a person needs to learn self-discipline and patience, and certainly the self-control of one’s own mouth.

Complaining is a part of life, and frustration almost always produces complaining.

But as David states in this Psalm, that he will heed his own ways. Meaning he will examine his own ways and exercise self-control, so as not to bring, or perpetuate doubt or misunderstanding, or even sins, in others, as a result of his own ill thought out comments.

So, we are to keep our tongue in check, and our mouth muzzled, so long as there is anyone within hearing distance, or reading distance, that might mistake our words, or our tone, as a negative with regard to Christianity.
