Isaiah 30:33

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 30:33

33 For Tophet [Tophteh] is ordained [`arak] of old ['ethmowl]; yea, for the king [melek] it is prepared [kuwn]; he hath made it deep [`amaq] and large [rachab]: the pile [maduwrah] thereof is fire ['esh] and much [rabah] wood [`ets]; the breath [nashamah] of the LORD [Yahovah], like a stream [nachal] of brimstone [gophriyth], doth kindle [ba`ar] it.   KJV-Interlinear

33 For a burning place has long been prepared; indeed, for the king it is made ready, its pyre made deep and wide, with fire and wood in abundance; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.  ESV

The Lake of Fire, is herein described, and has many references in the book of Revelation, but the concept is documented and illustrated within the Old Testament, as we have here in this verse.

The word Tophet means, that which causes loathing or abhorrence, that which produces disgust and vomiting, to spit out.

The word occurs only in 2 Kings 23, and in several verses in Jeremiah chapters 7, and 19.

It is typically applied to a deep valley that is southeast of Jerusalem which was associated with the seed of idolatry, and more particularly of the worship of Moloch. The name given to that valley was Hinnom, or Tophet, and later referred to as Gehenna.

The valley was the place of worship of false gods, particularly Moloch, which included the construction of huge brazen images with a hollow trunk and arms which was heated and set on fire within, and then children were placed as a sacrifice within the hollow trunk. And in order to drown out their screams, drums were beaten.

In later times the valley became a dumping place for the filth and trash of the city of Jerusalem, including the dead which had nowhere else to be placed. And in order to reduce or get rid of the stench, fires were kept going, in order to keep things burning, and hence the valley became the symbolism of a vast never-ending Lake of Fire. A term which was used in the New Testament to describe the eternal and never-ending and continuing destruction of all that is corrupt and wicked and evil.

Note that the garbage of the city, the city of peace, was removed from the city, and destroyed at a location outside of the city.  The Lake of Fire is not a part of the future eternal state of Christians, but excluded and located elsewhere.

Ordained of old, is a reference to an appointment of this eventual place, since the beginning of time. And since only God existed since the beginning of time, then the decree came from God.

It was to this place, the Lake of Fire, that Satan and all of his fallen angel associates, having been convicted, are now sentenced to, which sentence has not yet been carried out.

The king, is a reference to Satan, since in times old, he was the only one who had been condemned, and for which this place was originally prepared.

And by the way, the real Lake of Fire, is not on or of this present earth or universe, but will be located someplace beyond our knowledge and existence, since our eternal life will not be encumbered with anything bad, and certainly not a place like the Lake of Fire.

Deep and wide, is a reference to the vast capacity, such that this place can receive a huge volume of garbage. The garbage of course will consist of unbelievers, and Satan, and so forth.

With fire and wood in abundance, indicates unlimited resources of fuel, such that the fires will never end, and the burning will never end, and the destruction will never end.

In the final phrase, the breath of the Lord, like a stream of brimstone, kindles it, indicates that the breath of the Lord, being the perfect judgment of God, acts like air being blown over smoldering embers, igniting them into flames, and as with brimstone, of extreme intensity.

And the idea here is, the kindling, or the beginning of the fires, is started by the evil ones themselves. Evil, in effect is the cause of its own destruction.

Typically, the breath of God, is used to describe the spark of life, or the breath of life, and the same word, nashamah, is used in Genesis, to describe the spark of life or the breath of life, in Adam.

However here, instead of taking on life, which God breathes, evil uses that spark or breath, to bring about its own self-destruction.

Isaiah 30:32

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 30:32

32 And in every place [kol] where the grounded [muwcadah] staff [matteh] shall pass [ma`abar], which the LORD [Yahovah] shall lay [nuwach] upon him, it shall be with tabrets [toph] and harps [kinnowr]: and in battles [milchamah] of shaking [tanuwphah] will he fight [lacham] with it.   KJV-Interlinear

32 And every stroke of the appointed staff that the LORD lays on them will be to the sound of tambourines and lyres. Battling with brandished arm, he will fight with them.  ESV

Grounded, is a reference to a foundation, which refers to something that is permanently put in its place and is unmovable. The grounded staff, refers to the judgment of God, meaning with every stroke of punishment, that punishment is fixed upon the enemy, such that they cannot escape.

And taking off from the previous verse, the rod of Assyria, may inflict destruction, and to a certain extent is even allowed by God, as He allows Assyria to inflict punishment on disobedient people.

Jesus Christ controls history. Jesus Christ controls history in three ways.

First, He has direct control by means of His direct action. As God He created the universe, and angels, and every living thing, including humanity.

Second, Christ controls history through indirect control. By means of truth and Bible doctrine, and through the laws of divine establishment, humanity is guided by principles of law and order, due process, principles of free enterprise, and so forth.

Third, Jesus Christ controls history through permissive control. He allows the free will of man to function freely. And by this, people will choose either for good or for evil, which God allows that free choice, and thereby some people become aggressive, while others become passive. And to some extent, the laws of the jungle can rule throughout society. People can rise against people, nations can rise against nations. And by this God allows evil to fight evil, as it were.  Needless to say, people suffer from the repercussions of their decisions.

But there is always a line drawn in the sand. Evil can go so far, yet no farther.

Israel had become evil, and therefore God allowed Assyria to punish Israel, by means of their invasion. Something that Israel brought on itself by being weak, by being unprepared, by choosing evil rather than truth, by choosing the world rather than God.

Anytime and every time, a person rejects God and turns to the resources of the world, then you can only expect that the evils of the world will turn against you.

But evil goes only so far. When God brings a halt to it, then we have here the strokes of God’s punishment, setting deep as a foundation, into those who would presume to take the law into their own hands.

And the result?

Evil is brought to a halt, defeated, and even overturned. The rod of Assyria is replaced by the rod of God.

The suffering and sorrows brought on by the attacks of evil, when evil is defeated, are replaced by the tambourines and music of deliverance and freedom.

And battling with the shaking or brandished arm, is a reference to only one person, namely Jesus Christ, who flexes the muscle of His will, and engages in a fight where the outcome is already determined.

And that fight of course, always results in a victory for Christ.

Isaiah 30:31

Isaiah 30:31

31 For through the voice [qowl] of the LORD [Yahovah] shall the Assyrian ['Ashshuwr] be beaten down [chathath], which smote [nakah] with a rod [shebet].   KJV-Interlinear

31 The Assyrians will be terror-stricken at the voice of the LORD, when he strikes with his rod.  ESV

Assyria was named after Asshur, the second son of Shem, who was the oldest son of Noah. Asshur means straight, or going straight, as in going ones own way, which comes to mean going astray.

Assyria was the empire located north of Israel.

Assyria was one of the first empires of human history.

Assyria eventually conquered Syria, and then the northern kingdom of Israel, and then the southern kingdom, called Judah.

Eventually Assyria would be conquered by the Babylonians, and replaced by the Babylonian Empire.

Assyria was a powerful empire, as noted here, as they struck with a rod, referring to their weaponry or military might.

However, in contrast, God strikes with His voice, setting the voice of God against the rod of Assyria.

Humanity has innumerable plans, plans beyond counting, and none of them work.

God has one plan, which has existed since eternity past, and it has never changed, but has worked perfectly and always will.

Humanity boasts of many weapons, from fists to rocks and clubs, to arrows and guns, and missiles and bombs, and on and on.

God has one weapon, namely truth, which He exercises with the power of His voice.

No matter what weapons, or power, or resources that humanity, or a person has at his disposal, the voice of God is far superior and can inflict complete and total destruction without ever missing, and is far more terrifying than anything that man has used or invented.

It is far better to be on the side of God, than to be opposite of God.

And to be on Gods side, all one has to do is comply with the mandates that are spelled out in the Bible, namely faith in Christ, and pursuing ones spiritual life, while in fellowship, by means of a daily Bible study.

Isaiah 30:30

Isaiah 30:30

30 And the LORD [Yahovah] shall cause his glorious [howd] voice [qowl] to be heard [shama`], and shall shew [ra'ah] the lighting down [Nachath] of his arm [zarowa`], with the indignation [za`aph] of his anger ['aph], and with the flame [lahab] of a devouring ['akal] fire ['esh], with scattering [nephets], and tempest [zerem], and hailstones ['eben] [barad].   KJV-Interlinear

30 And the LORD will cause his majestic voice to be heard and the descending blow of his arm to be seen, in furious anger and a flame of devouring fire, with a cloudburst and storm and hailstones.  ESV

Using language intended to seize the attention and awe of the hearer, Isaiah not only describes the power and ferocity of the Lord’s judgment, but he also describes the Lords direct involvement in that judgment, such that there can be no mistake, that this will not be a simple work of nature, but the actual act of God.

The word for Lord, is used throughout the Old Testament. It is used in reference to the second person of the Trinity, who is the God-man, and Savior, and is a reference to Jesus Christ.

His voice, expresses the command and decree of God.

Lightning down the arm, expresses God’s direct involvement in bringing judgment.

Indignation and anger, expresses the application of Gods perfect righteousness and perfect justice.

In the phrase fire and scattering and tempest and hailstones, all describe the overpowering and overwhelming nature of a judgment that cannot be escaped, nor can it be misunderstood.

Throughout history, these conditions have existed from time to time.

God physically removed Adam and Eve from the garden, He flooded the planet in the time of Noah, he delivered the Israelites from Egypt and destroyed pharaohs power, and on numerous other occasions Gods power and involvement have been clear and obvious in the events of human history.

In the final days of history, God’s direct involvement will begin with the rapture, and continue for seven years until the second advent of Christ.

These words describe Gods sovereign authority in issuing judgment against evil. These words are not available for self-righteous people, to throw at those that they deem are evil.

Jesus Christ controls history, and His decisions are His sovereign right, and no one else’s.

Isaiah 30:29

Isaiah 30:29

29 Ye shall have a song [shiyr], as in the night [layil] when a holy [qadash] solemnity [chag] is kept [qadash]; and gladness [simchah] of heart [lebab], as when one goeth [halak] with a pipe [chaliyl] to come [bow'] into the mountain [har] of the LORD [Yahovah], to the mighty One [tsuwr] of Israel [Yisra'el].   KJV-Interlinear

29 You shall have a song as in the night when a holy feast is kept, and gladness of heart, as when one sets out to the sound of the flute to go to the mountain of the LORD, to the Rock of Israel.  ESV

Even though this study is not scheduled to be posted until Monday, events are unfolding in Paris, this Friday evening, as I begin writing. Regardless of the evil that forces its way into this world, when it is all said and done, those who belong to Christ will not only have the last say, but also the last and best song of victory, to sing in their heart.

The song, is one of victory and celebration.

This is a song of recognition of Christ, in reference to a holy feast.

The Jewish feasts typically began at sunset, or about 6 PM. As the Jewish day began at 6 PM and ended at 6 PM the next evening. Our current calendar has a days beginning and ending at twelve midnight.

The feasts are rituals and celebrations of worship, focusing on the Messiah, who is Jesus Christ, and Gods overall plan and design. And, of bringing truth and understanding, through Bible doctrine, and the development of the individual spiritual life, resulting in the gladness of heart, otherwise known as spiritual maturity and the peace and contentment that results.

The mountain of the Lord, refers to the vastness of truth that is contained in, and available through, Bible doctrine.

And the Rock of Israel is the one true God, and Messiah, and Savior, namely Jesus Christ.

God’s grace is often times referred to using the symbolism of music. This is described in the Psalms, as the music plays on, and thus regardless of the circumstances and events of this world, God’s grace, and God’s plan continue on unhindered and uninterrupted.

To follow the sound of the flute, to the mountain of God, is to follow His grace provision, through faith, as one advances within their spiritual life to their completeness, and the fulfillment of each individual’s meaning and purpose in life.

The world is full of evil, and it will remain so until the end of human history.

Thus we have Bible doctrine, and the promise of ultimate deliverance and victory. And evil, will eventually be erased from existence.

Isaiah 30:28

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 30:28

28 And his breath [ruwach], as an overflowing [shataph] stream [nachal], shall reach to the midst [chatsah] of the neck [tsavva'r], to sift [nuwph] the nations [gowy] with the sieve [naphah] of vanity [shav']: and there shall be a bridle [recen] in the jaws [lachiy] of the people [`am], causing them to err [ta`ah].   KJV-Interlinear

28 his breath is like an overflowing stream that reaches up to the neck; to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction, and to place on the jaws of the peoples a bridle that leads astray.  ESV

The description of God’s judgment, is that of an overwhelming judgment.

The breath, carries the connotation of a powerful wind. The overflowing stream, describes a powerful and fast-moving flooding stream. Reaching to the neck, describes the overwhelming nature of the judgment and the ultimate powerlessness of the individual.

The sieve, is something that is typically used in an agricultural setting, wherein the good grain is retained in the dust and chaff and bad stuff fall through.

Vanity, is a word typically used for arrogance or emptiness or nothingness. These are all synonyms describing the value, which is no value, of the individual who has no truth within them.

And anyone, who does not pursue a daily study of the word of God, or does not live their life within the spiritual process mechanism, will by default, have nothing but emptiness within them. Their life is meaningless and worthless and empty. And they fall through the sieve, and are swept away.

But God will apply this to nations, entire nations, which describes the state of the world in the final days of history, but certainly could be used to describe the nations in this world even today.

And the last phrase is an interesting phrase. The bridle that leads astray.

The bridle is a piece of equipment that is strapped around the neck of an animal, typically a horse, thus allowing the horse, or the animal, to be led by someone else. The bridle is typically attached to a bit, which is placed in the mouth of the animal, giving the person leading it, more authority and control over the animal.

When the bridle is strapped on tight, and the person leading the animal is stronger than the animal, then regardless of how much the animal resists or fights the bridle, they have no choice but to follow, and go where they are led.

The animal is symbolic. This describes the spiritually negative individual.

The bridle is symbolic. This describes the volition of the individual, and the decisions they make themselves.

And the one leading them, which is implied within this verse, is their sin nature, which they have subjected themselves voluntarily, through their own volition and decisions, to lead themselves in the direction of the sin nature.

And the sin nature always leads astray. Meaning, that they are led away from truth.

And God, who controls everything, allows negative people to lead themselves astray. God permits free will, and people are given the right to make their own decisions, even if they are the wrong decisions.

Therefore, people of their own choice, which includes indifference and apathy, and a defiant attitude toward God, toward Christ, toward Bible doctrine, toward the instruction of Bible doctrine, place themselves under the restraint of a bit and bridle of their own making.

And when people are indifferent towards learning truth, or resist learning truth for whatever reason, they subject themselves to an overwhelming power and authority, which is a sin nature.

And so they are caught up, as it were, all the way to their neck, in a fast moving powerful flooding stream, from which there is virtually no escape, due to their own effort.

The only way out, is through the effort of God through Christ and doctrine.

And the only way to get rid of the bit and bridle, is to change the attitude and start learning Bible doctrine.

Isaiah 30:27

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 30:27

27 Behold, the name [shem] of the LORD [Yahovah] cometh [bow'] from far [merchaq], burning [ba`ar] with his anger ['aph], and the burden [massa'ah] thereof is heavy [kobed]: his lips [saphah] are full [male'] of indignation [za`am], and his tongue [lashown] as a devouring ['akal] fire ['esh]:   KJV-Interlinear

27 Behold, the name of the LORD comes from afar, burning with his anger, and in thick rising smoke; his lips are full of fury, and his tongue is like a devouring fire;   ESV

In general, people are just plain stubborn. They don’t listen and they don’t learn. And that is why they find themselves in trouble, sooner or later. And this verse is one of the greatest explanations of the certainty of things to come, and of a condemnation of those who do not listen to the teaching of the word of God.

Behold, is a term designed to get ones attention. Because something certain is going to happen, and if you don’t pay attention, if you don’t learn, if you remain indifferent or apathetic, then you will not be ready.

The Lord comes, is a statement of fact.

In this chapter, Isaiah has described the judgments that are coming, and the blessings that are coming. And depending on which side you are on, you will either be enduring and suffering judgments, or you will be enjoying blessings.

We already know, that these prophecies are designed for the final days of history.

But they also apply, in principle, to each person’s individual life.

The descriptive terms within this verse are meant to describe the harshness, and the thoroughness, and the speed, and the certainty, with which God’s judgment will approach, and is coming.

We have mentioned before in our studies, that our current time, unlike any other time in history, presents us with an unprecedented ease of opportunity for having, for enjoying, for obtaining, and for living within our spiritual life.

We enjoy written material, which was not always available in the past. We enjoy phenomenal technologies with computers and smart phones, and the Internet, which allows individuals to connect from anywhere in the world.

And the opportunities to learn Bible doctrine and to grow up within one spiritual life, have never been easier, than at any other time in history. And this gives us a phenomenally great blessing of which we can easily take advantage.

However, most people do not. They are indifferent, they are apathetic, they find the smallest things to criticize. And, people tend to be extremely inflexible and narrow minded when they are confronted with a teaching of the word of God, that is not compatible or convenient to how they want things to be in their life.

And because of this, judgment is coming.

It will come in the form of the many little things that inconvenience us in our lives, and they will come in the form of the greater things that will pound us senselessly, or until we learn common sense.

Isaiah 30:26

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 30:26

26 Moreover the light ['owr] of the moon [labanah] shall be as the light ['owr] of the sun [chammah], and the light ['owr] of the sun [chammah] shall be sevenfold [shib`athayim], as the light ['owr] of seven [sheba`] days [yowm], in the day [yowm] that the LORD [Yahovah] bindeth up [chabash] the breach [sheber] of his people [`am], and healeth [rapha'] the stroke [machats] of their wound [makkah].   KJV-Interlinear

26 Moreover, the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day when the LORD binds up the brokenness of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow.  ESV

So many people have a phenomenal opportunity now, to learn and grow and be blessed by God in this contemporary world, and yet they ignore it, preferring social politeness, and we have nothing and we are nowhere near, the trials and troubles that are going to occur in the future tribulation.

Isaiah goes on to describe the tremendous intensity of the Lord’s blessings, which will follow the intense sufferings that believers in Christ will be made to endure through those final days of human history.

This description of the intensity of light, is a description of blessing. Light is generally always used to describe truth and prosperity and blessing and clarity of sight, while darkness is typically the opposite.

This intensification of light, is not described as intensification of heat, which would bring pressure and suffering, but this describes around-the-clock blessing. While the moon rules the night, it is as bright as day. And the sun rules the day, and it is brighter still throughout the entire week.

In our current day we refer to this continuous and ongoing activity as being 24 – 7, to describe an ongoing and continuous around the clock, all day, every day, activity that never ends throughout the day, throughout the week, throughout the year.

And after the second advent, and as the millennial reign of Christ begins, this intensification of blessing will begin and it will continue throughout the reign of Christ.  And, it will never end.

There will be a phenomenal contrast between the destruction and brutality of the tribulation, as compared to the blessing and prosperity and happiness of the millennium.

Everyone throughout history has had an opportunity to enjoy this type of blessing.

But even in our current generation, with all of the blessings of the Internet and smart phones and computers and such, which enhance our chances for a phenomenal life, but unfortunately the general trend of people is to not take the spiritual life seriously, and not pursue it with a deep desire as they should.

The Christian life therefore, becomes just another activity in life, with certain rules and expectations, which society has defined, but which are a departure from the real expectations that are taught in the Bible.

And the real tragedy and the real failure of life will be that missed opportunity that can be so easily obtained now, but which people just don’t want bad enough.

In the final part of this verse where Isaiah mentions the binding up and the healing of wounds, is a description of phenomenal suffering that has occurred. The suffering that is beyond description and even beyond imagination.

And yet despite the tremendous odds against them, people will turn to Christ and they will turn to doctrine, and their faith will grow in the face of certain disaster and death during those tribulation years, and they will be delivered.

The reward, will be mind-boggling prosperity and blessing.

When Jesus first came into this world, He was here for thirty-three years and change.

The actual Son of God was here, and the opportunity to see Him and speak with Him, and learn phenomenal things, was available to everyone. And yet the only thing that people wanted was to have their physical ailments healed, and to see their enemies, the Romans, defeated. No one was interested in a destiny in heaven, or in the truth of the universe.

Today, we have the completed Scriptures. And today, we have the completed plan and method for advancing to phenomenal heights within our life. And yet the general trend is nothing more than that of lip service, and social politeness.

Each person has to decide for themselves, whether they will be on the social bandwagon, or whether they will find within themselves, the desire to learn and grow up in their spiritual life.

25 And on every lofty mountain and every high hill there will be brooks running with water, in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.  ESV

Brooks of running water, symbolizes blessing. Typically you will not find brooks of running water on the tops of mountains or hills, as you would find them in the valleys between mountains and hills.

But to find brooks of water on the mountain tops and on the hilltops, expresses blessings far and above that blessing that would be typically associated with brooks of water in the valleys.

And in this verse, this is an important distinction that is being made regarding great blessing, because this blessing is going to occur simultaneously with a great slaughter.

The great slaughter, is a reference to the Armageddon campaign that will literally come very close to destroying all of humanity.

And when the world is falling apart, and when people are dying all around, the point of this verse is that there is going to be great blessing in the midst of great disaster.

Those who turn to God through Christ, are the recipients of Gods blessing.

Those who advance to spiritual maturity through Bible doctrine, are the recipients of Gods blessing.

It is easy to expect, and to receive and to appreciate, blessings in times of prosperity.

But in times of adversity, anxiety and impatience generally interfere with blessing, or the recognition of it.

In order to bring the entire world around to tremendous blessing and prosperity and happiness, all evil has to be removed. And the mechanism for that removal will be the greatest and most phenomenal world war that history will ever see.

So while the powers that be, are crumbling all around, and humanity is desperately trying to destroy itself, with Satan’s help of course, Jesus Christ will be exercising His sovereign authority, in the protection of all of those who will have turned to Him, even in the midst of the greatest disaster that history will ever see.

Isaiah 30:24

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 30:24

24 The oxen ['eleph] likewise and the young asses [`ayir] that ear [`abad] the ground ['adamah] shall eat ['akal] clean [chamiyts] provender [baliyl], which hath been winnowed [zarah] with the shovel [rachath] and with the fan [mizreh].   KJV-Interlinear

24 and the oxen and the donkeys that work the ground will eat seasoned fodder, which has been winnowed with shovel and fork.   ESV

Continuing from the previous verse, Isaiah describes how phenomenal the prosperity will be. Typically in an agricultural setting, crops are planted and harvested, and the best of the seed, and the best of the harvest is held back for sale, or for storage and future sale, or for future planting.

The best of the crop is certainly not fed to the animals.

However, in the scenario being described, the harvest will be so abundant, and the prosperity so phenomenal, that even the animals will be eating the best of the best foods.

Donkeys that ear the ground, is a phrase describing their work in pulling a plow. And the oxen and the donkeys, are the working beasts of the ancient farm. They would be typically fed what was available, and certainly not the best of the crop.

However, in the millennium, everything will change. The burdens of life from the past and present will no longer be in effect. Because, we now have a description of the abundance that will become available to those who have already turned their lives to Christ, and who have survived, by the grace of God, the disasters of the tribulation.

God is truth. Anything that is not God related, is false.

Turning to God through Christ, by way of doctrine, is turning toward truth, and the ultimate success that it provides.

Turning away from God, is turning toward the false, and certain disaster and failure.

Life does not exist only in this physical world. If you have noticed, the generations of the past are no longer here and yet time marches on. When we are gone, time will continue tomorrow, next year, and on and on, and our presence is not required for the continuation of time.

Therefore, it is wise not only to plan for this life, but more so for the next.
