22 Cease [chadal] ye from man, ['adam] whose breath [nashamah] is in his nostrils: ['aph] for wherein is he to be accounted of [chashab]? KJV-Interlinear

22 Stop regarding man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils; For why should he be esteemed?  NASB

The word for man is ‘adam,’ which means flush or rosy, dyed, made, red ruddy, to show blood, common, low, and comes to mean he who is made from the ruddy red low or worthless dust.

And here man has power only so long as he has breath in his nostrils.  For today he lives and tomorrow he dies. And once dead, mans power and his thoughts, cease along with him.

Ps 146:4

4 His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; In that very day his thoughts perish. NASB

In short, humanity is frail, humanity has severe limitations, regardless of how man looks at himself or thinks about himself.

Man lives for just a few decades, and yet within the first two decades of life, he comes to the belief that he knows all there is to know about life, history, how the world works, how society functions and so forth.

For someone who possesses so little, humanity overstates his own wisdom and importance by lightyears.

How then does one who knows so much, run and hide in the rocks from God who is indeed omniscient and omnipotent and omnipresent, and presume that he can fool God.  Just who is the fool?

And just who is man held accountable to, if not to himself, then to God?

And so this chapter closes with mans phenomenal inability to do anything wise in this life.  And therefore one should not place ones trust in man, but in God.

There is but one God, one Savior, one plan, one truth, one spiritual life, one destiny of worth, one faith and to disregard them all, is nothing short of stupidity.

And yet people disregard God everyday.  They disregard their spiritual life everyday.  People invent their own values and their own spirituality, and their own path to heaven, and then when they finally get that knock on the door of the end of their life, they find out too late, that they had made the biggest mistake of their entire life and it will be too late to do it over.

We all have the opportunity to advance to spiritual maturity and to end life a winner, which is accompanied with infinitely greater rewards than anything possible from this world.

And yet people disregard God and His plan.  Didn’t I say that somewhere before?

Life is filled with far too many ‘more’ important things, and so people do not take any of this Bible stuff seriously.

Unfortunately that is a huge mistake.  Are you making that same mistake?

21 To go [bow'] into the clefts [naqarah] of the rocks, [tsuwr] and into the tops [ca`iyph] of the ragged rocks, [cela`] for [paniym] fear [pachad] of the LORD, [Yahovah] and for the glory [hadar] of his majesty, [ga'own] when he ariseth [quwm] to shake terribly [`arats] the earth. 21 In order to go into the caverns of the rocks and the clefts of the cliffs, Before the terror of the Lord and the splendor of His majesty, When He arises to make the earth tremble. NASB

Rev 6:15-17

15 And the kings of the earth and the great men and the commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains;

16 and they said to the mountains and to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb;

17 for the great day of their wrath has come; and who is able to stand?"  NASB

And so it goes in life.  People have the attitude that they can eat, drink, and have fun, for that is all there is to live for.  No one looks to tomorrow.  That is just another day that can be planned when it comes, but tonight is now and that is the extent of our life as far as people are concerned.

No responsibility, no accountability, no cares in the world.  Just text and tell, just post and pretend.  The world is at our internet finger tips, who cares who is on the other end.

But one day, the end of our life always knocks at our door, and then what?  And sooner or later the end of the world will be knocking and that is when life will be crashing down on everyone across the planet.

The image here is very moving and disturbing.  The entire earth shaking, the consternation and alarm of the people, their renouncing confidence in all the things to which they had trusted, their rapid flight to get away, their appearing on high projecting cliffs in an effort to hide from God, are all abysmal and terrible images. They signify the extreme severity of God's justice.

People hide from people by using closets, attics, hide outs and such.  But to hide from God, how is that even possible?

God is omniscient.  He knows everything even before you were born.  God is foreknowledge.  He knows everything you will think before you know it.  God is omnipresent.  He is everywhere simultaneously and can follow you like the skin on your own body.  God is omnipotent.  He created the universe in an instant and can shake the planet in its entirety with a blink of His eye.

And as the entire world collapses around people, whether it be life in general seemingly falling all around you, or at the end of history in the final days, Gods judgment is seen but no repentance accompanies it.  People run and hide from what, to what end, to what destiny or future?

People refuse to recognize God, they refuse to recognize Christ, they refuse to recognize their own flaws and failures in reality. All they see is the here and now and they remain stubborn to their own change.

And the final blow to mans arrogance is going to be mentioned in the next and last verse in this chapter, which we will study tomorrow.

20 In that day [yowm] a man ['adam] shall cast [shalak] his idols ['eliyl] of silver, [keceph] and his idols ['eliyl] of gold, [zahab] which they made each one for himself [`asah] to worship, [shachah] to the moles [chaphor] [perah] and to the bats; [`atalleph]KJV-Interlinear

20 In that day men will cast away to the moles and the bats Their idols of silver and their idols of gold, Which they made for themselves to worship, NASB

At the time of Gods massive judgment, the things that are or have been the most important to people, will be thrown away.

Idols refer to anything that replaces God and spirituality, in ones life.  This can be actual idols that are worshiped, adored, loved, but can include work for work-a-holics, food for those who eat and eat, social activities of all sorts, entertainment as a primary focus of ones life, accumulating possessions of any type imaginable, whether real estate or stamp collecting or secular interests, or religious pursuits, or whatever. 

Idols can refer to simple things like idle texting on the internet or cell phones, or menial activities that occupy a great deal of ones time.  It can include escapes from reality by means of drugs and alcohol or other escapes.

In short, whatever you do in lieu of pursuing your spiritual life as it should be pursued, and thus ignoring God, Christ, doctrine and so forth, that then is the focus of your life and the idol, the worship, of your life.  And unfortunately there are too many people that simply waste their life away on nothing activities.

But one day in each persons life, there will come a time when the important things will be placed right in front of them, death, and then of what value are their activities or possessions?

And when the end days arrive in history, and Gods wrath falls repeatedly on humanity across the entire globe, those folks by the billions, will be throwing their valued attitudes and possessions and things, to the bats and to the moles.

Valued things are described as things of gold and silver.  That gives them a high value in their mind.

And now those things of high value are thrown to the bats and moles.

Bats and moles are little critters that live in the ground, and in the caves.  They feed on insects and roots, and their homes are small or insignificant or they stink terribly.  The bat caves with all the filth and stench will become the repository of their valuables. The mole holes will become the repository of all their valuables.

In other words, people will see that their priorities and things that they have focused their entire life on, are totally worthless.  Their gold, or what they thought was their gold, their idols, their focus, is no better than bat doo-doo.

And that is unfortunate not only because people have placed their total attention on the things of this life, temporary and useless things, but they discover it at the end of their life, when it is too late.  Their spiritual life was totally ignored, or given little concern or little importance.

The real things of value, your spiritual life, is the gold, the genuine gold of life.  The things of this life, the worldly things, have zero value, are not gold, and are no better than bat doo.  And yet most folks choose the doo over the reality, and live a life of pretense and insignificance.

19 And they shall go [bow'] into the holes [ma`arah] of the rocks, [tsuwr] and into the caves [machillah] of the earth, [`aphar] for [paniym] fear [pachad] of the LORD, [Yahovah] and for the glory [hadar] of his majesty, [ga'own] when he ariseth [quwm] to shake terribly [`arats] the earth. 19 And men will go into caves of the rocks, And into holes of the ground Before the terror of the Lord, And before the splendor of His majesty, When He arises to make the earth tremble. NASB

They, is a reference to all who have rejected God, Christ, doctrine and the spiritual life as God has designed and defined it.  And more specifically, they, is a reference to that final generation, that will live in the last days of human rule on this earth, the Tribulation.

We know that the tribulation is yet future, and will begin when our Rapture occurs, and will last for seven years.  The end of which will be the most horrifying period in all of human history.

Judea and Israel in general is a mountainous country.  And within the mountains and hills, there are many such caves and crevices and places into which a person can go for safety and hiding.   And this provides us with a descriptive example of just how terrified people will be, and to what lengths they will go to hide from Gods wrath.

At En-gedi, a cave is mentioned where David with six hundred men hid himself from Saul in the ‘sides’ of the cave system, 1 Sam 24. Caves or dens were sometimes constructed for refuge or defense, Judg 6:2; 1 Sam 13:6.

So in times of extreme trouble, such as in an invasion, people would run and hide anywhere they could find what they thought would provide them with some semblance of safety or escape.  Refugees are always on the run just trying to stay ahead of the advance of a murderous invading force.  But people hide in basements, and closets and in attics and street drain systems and such.

When He arises, is an expression that means when the action begins and continues.  In this case it will be Gods judgment, a series of actions brought against unbelieving and wicked humanity, which actions will last for many weeks and months and years during the ultimate period of judgment, the Tribulation.  The worst of which will occur during the last half of the Tribulation, which will last three-and-a-half years.

Having difficulties such as storms or invasions or crime or atrocities is bad enough when they last for just a few days or even weeks, but when they continue on and on and there is never an end, then that will be the worst possible experience to have, ever.

For to have the earth literally shaking beneath and all around you, with no stopping, makes it very clear that something if really wrong.

That earthquake in Japan pasted for six minutes, which is a pretty long time for an earthquake, but then a half an hour later the ocean waves came in and buried several coastal cities.  And, they just kept coming and coming.  But then that disaster finally came to an end, just as the disasters in Indonesia and Haiti and other places ended.

But, during the Tribulation, as we have already studied in our Revelation study, the disasters and horrible circumstances will commence after the Rapture, and they will continue and escalate for the entire seven year period, being extreme and beyond extreme in the latter half of the Tribulation.  During that seven year period, very nearly the entire population of the world, will die. Not sure how much more extreme and terrifying things could possibly get on this planet.
