Romans 4:2

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Romans 4:2

2 For [gar] if [ei] Abraham [Abraam] were justified [dikaioo] by [ek] works [ergon], he hath [echo] whereof to glory [kauchema]; but [alla] not [ou] before [pros] God [theos].KJV-Interlinear

2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.   ESV

Paul quickly points out that Abraham was not justified by works, and the scriptures do not say anywhere, that works were any part of his justification.  Quite the contrary, works are rejected and dismissed as the basis for anything except boasting before people.

When someone works and accomplishes something, then they have a sound basis for bragging or boasting or announcing their accomplishment.

This is normal and typical.

When we graduate from school, we announce it.  When we begin a career, we announce it.  When we get married, we announce it.  When we have a child, we announce it.  When we accomplish something, we announce it.

These things are normal and proper because we have actually done something.

But when God does something and we do nothing, then we have no right to claim credit for that which God has done.  And in the spiritual life, God has and does, everything.  We do nothing.

We receive the benefit of Gods effort as a gift.  A gift that is neither earned nor deserved.

When we work we receive a paycheck.  When we achieve something we receive an award.

But these things are not gifts, but compensation of recognition for effort.

Grace is a gift which can never be earned.

So rather than earning salvation through work, Abraham recognized the salvation that he has already received, through a work, namely circumcision, which was a ritual reminder of faith, not the source of faith.

Isaiah 28:10

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 28:10

10 For precept [tsav] must be upon precept [tsav], precept [tsav] upon precept [tsav]; line [qav] upon line [qav], line [qav] upon line [qav]; here a little [ze`eyr], and there a little [ze`eyr]:   KJV-Interlinear

10 For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.”   ESV

God teaches by repetition.  And yet people resent being taught the same principle over and over, again and again.  And yet, most, even the vast majority still do not learn, because they do not listen, do not concentrate, do not focus, do not care to be taught.

And so, just as a school teacher teaches young pupils by repetition, which by the way is the best way to learn, the pupils still do not learn, because they are indifferent.

The subject is simple.  The learning process is simple to follow. There is nothing difficult about the material, but so few get it.

And the result?  Negative volition yields failure, and failure yields disaster, and disaster yields loss.  And in the case of the spiritual life, the loss is great loss because it is a loss for all of eternity.

If there ever was a verse to memorize, this would be the verse.  One should not only memorize it, but incorporate it in their daily study routine.  And then day after day, listen and listen and listen, as the material is repeated, and perhaps sooner or later, something might actually be learned.  And, the spiritual growth process just might begin to advance.  Which is that case, some actual spiritual benefit will be gained.

Isaiah 28:9

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 28:9

9 Whom shall he teach [yarah] knowledge [de`ah]? and whom shall he make to understand [biyn] doctrine [sh@muw`ah]? them that are weaned [gamal] from the milk [chalab], and drawn [attiyq] from the breasts [shad].   KJV-Interlinear

9 “To whom will he teach knowledge, and to whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, those taken from the breast?   ESV

The single biggest hindrance to advancing in the spiritual life is the refusal to seek and receive instruction.  People simply do not pursue learning.  They find it too tedious, too inconvenient, and they presume that they do not need to be taught.  Thus they fail because of a barrier they themselves set up between them and God.

The context is drunkards demonstrating a disorganized life as a result of not knowing truth.

Truth is the content of the scriptures.  Truth has to be learned from within the environment of fellowship, which is the environment obtained when one confesses his sins.  Fellowship gives one the clarity of sight and thought, making discernment, learning, understanding, and using Bible doctrine easy and beneficial.

Truth has to be learned through instruction, but one has to be willing to learn, and objective in learning, and consistent in their daily learning.

Those who refuse or resist learning, or the learning process, do not learn.  That should be obvious.  Therefore, they do not gain access to the clarity of life, lack orientation to life and reality, and that leaves the fog and confusion of the carnal world.

In total blackness, knowledge wise, there is stumbling, falling, disorientation and so forth, just as a drunk would behave.  Because when you cannot see, you cannot have any form of frame of reference.  You do not know where you have been, where you are, or where you are going, spiritually speaking.

In any case, even when learning begins, it begins as an infant.  For an infant cannot learn adult concepts.  And one remains as a spiritual infant, so long as the learning process is hampered or hindered or not used at all.

An infant needs its momma.  Only when you begin to grow up, can you wean off of momma and begin to eat the solid foods of an adult.

So the question is posed, when all are negative toward doctrine, then who is there to teach, who is there to learn, who is there to wean?

And the answer is obvious.

When people just want to feel good, just want to be entertained, just want to pass by, then they are not going to learn anything but infant concepts, if they learn anything at all.

That leaves them open to the many distractions and opinions of this world, for they do not have the inner resources to resist the worlds distractions and opinions.  And that leaves disaster waiting just around the corner.

And so, to avoid spiritual disaster, then each person needs to develop an inner desire to want to learn, and then pursue that learning process so they can grow up to spiritual maturity, so they can develop and fulfil their own meaning and purpose, which God intended, for their life.

Isaiah 28:8

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Isaiah 28:8

8 For all tables [shulchan] are full [male'] of vomit [qe'] and filthiness [tsow'ah], so that there is no place [maqowm] clean.   KJV-Interlinear

8 For all tables are full of filthy vomit, with no space left.   ESV

Isaiah continues with the metaphor, describing the life and lifestyle and pattern of life, of those who reject God and truth.

Wickedness tends to be superficial, and shameful.

And what is more, the people who are being described, as vomiting on the tables, do not care, or do not take notice of their behavior.

Although many feel they are spiritual, but when it comes down to the details of their life, a close examination reveals their tendency of ignoring God, Christ, doctrine, and all of the many mandates required and expected.

People pass by Christianity with lip service, but no substance, never realizing that they are selfish and self-centered, and really indifferent with regard to living the spiritual life.

They are comfortable in their chosen lifestyle, because it is convenient.  And when compared to those who are outright defiant toward God, Christ, and doctrine, there is no difference.

For lack of doctrine in the soul, is lack of doctrine in the soul, regardless of why it is lacking.

And the result is the same, puking, vomiting, gagging, and discusting.

When the soul is filthy, the life is filthy. And lack of doctrine, which is the cleanliness of life, leaves only filth remaining.

Psalm 36:2

Copyright Ó 2015 J. Neely
Psalm 36:2

2 For he flattereth [chalaq] himself in his own eyes [`ayin], until his iniquity [`avon] be found [matsa'] to be hateful [sane'].   KJV-Interlinear

2 For he flatters himself in his own eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.   ESV

The word for flatter, means to be smooth, to be self-absorbed.  The wicked disregards God, and therefore truth, for God is truth.

That leaves only the delusion of ones own importance, which is to elevate ones own importance to the level of the absurd.

Exalting oneself, ends up in rejecting or denying ones own sins and flaws.  This is an attempt to hide ones own sins even from God.  And that makes the delusion complete.

The wicked cannot see, and refuse to see, their own deficiencies, but others with wisdom can see the obvious.

And who is the wicked?

All unbelievers are wicked by definition.  All believers who disregard truth, live out of fellowship, and are therefore wicked.  Wickedness is life in the carnal realm.  Technically, when one is out of fellowship, one is wicked.  Confession and restoration are the only solution.

However, the overall pattern of ones life, determines wickedness or spirituality.

Everyone sins and therefore subject to stumbling, but that does not make them wicked per se.  For truth serves to negate the confusion of the world.

However, if a person is constantly exposed to the world and maintains an indifference toward truth, then wickedness will eventually lay claim and build up a delusion that is difficult to escape.

Disregard for God, means disregard for truth.  Disrespect is supported by arrogance.  And arrogance is the biggest barrier, locking out humility and objectivity.
