10 And [kai] I heard [akouo] a loud [megas] voice [phone] saying [lego] in [en] heaven, [ouranos] Now [arti] is come [ginomai] salvation, [soteria] and [kai] strength, [dunamis] and [kai] the kingdom [basileia] of our [hemon] God, [theos] and [kai] the power [exousia] of his [autos] Christ: [Christos] for [hoti] the accuser [kategoreo] of our [hemon] brethren [adelphos] is cast down, [kataballo] which [ho] accused [kategoros] them [autos] before [enopion] our [hemon] God [theos] day [hemera] and [kai] night. [nux] KJV-Interlinear

10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night. NASB

The voice is not identified, but it speaks singularly as a collective voice from all who are resident in heaven at that time. At the time of Satan’s eviction out from heaven.

All believers in heaven, all elect angels who are in heaven, perhaps even all of creation, symbolically, Rom 8:19-22, sing out with one collective voice as Satan and all of his evil cohorts, have finally been evicted from heaven, from before Gods court, where accusations that have been made day and night throughout the ages, and can no longer be submitted.

Satan will have made all of the possible accusations that can or could be made. All have been rejected as unfounded, because they have no foundation in truth.

With Satan’s eviction from heaven, all court proceedings will have been concluded. Satan’s accusations to remove or reverse his conviction will have failed.

He is about to be confined in prison, while God has His say and rule over history, but Satan will not go without a fight.

Thus the second half of the Tribulation will unfold as Jesus stated, the ‘Great Tribulation,’ which will be the most horrendous period of time in all of human history.

If you can imagine all of the examples of atrocities from history, all of the examples of terror and crime and evil that have been portrayed in the movies, and multiply them many times over, for the worse, then you might begin to understand what people are going to be faced with in the latter half of the Tribulation.

But, nevertheless, with Satan’s removal from heaven, the end is now very near. The conclusion of Satan’s rule and influence is very near.

The salvation, or the removal of Satan’s role in history, is very near. The power and rule and authority of God, and His plan, namely the Son and His role in history, are about to assume control. Therefore the end of human suffering is fast approaching.

Revelation 12:9

9 And [kai] the great [megas] dragon [drakon] was cast out, [ballo] that old [archaios] serpent, [ophis] called [kaleo] the Devil, [diabolos] and [kai] Satan, [Satanas] which [ho] deceiveth [planao] the whole [holos] world: [oikoumene] he was cast out [ballo] into [eis] the earth, [ge] and [kai] his [autos] angels [aggelos] were cast out [ballo] with [meta] him. [autos] KJV-Interlinear

9 And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. NASB

And here the dragon is identified as Satan or the devil. Satan means adversary, while devil means accuser. Both terms carry connotations of judicial protocol.

Which means that although there is an angelic conflict, the entire confrontation between God and Satan, is also a judicial process. Satan committed a crime. God called him on that crime. Satan refused to repent. Satan was arraigned, charged, tried, convicted, and sentenced.

His sentence is the Lake of Fire, however as in every judicial proceeding, the formal sentence is not carried out pending appeal. Human history is that appeal process.

Satan is not attempting to reverse his conviction, but instead is trying to ruin God and therefore trying to remove his conviction by means of discrediting God and Gods right to try him in the first place.

Satan is called the deceiver, ‘planao,’ which likewise carries the connotation of one who deceives habitually. It is his nature and habit to deceive people and the entire world. Deception means the effort of withholding truth and misleading with lies, and doing this intentionally.

He is called the father of lies, John 8:44.

With his removal from heaven, his appeal formally ends. Satan will contest his removal, but will eventually be cast into prison during the 1000 year millennial reign of Christ, in which Christ will demonstrate that without Satan, the world will enjoy unbelievable prosperity and health.

With Satan in the world these past many millennia, hardship and difficulty have been the norm.

At the end of the 1000 year reign of Christ, Satan will be released, and demonstrate that he has learned nothing. He will rebel once again against Christ, and that rebellion will be put down immediately. The sentence of the lake of Fire will then be executed thus ending history as we have known it.

6 I will not be afraid [yare'] of ten thousands [rababah] of people, [`am] that have set [shiyth] themselves against me round about. [cabiyb] KJV-Interlinear

6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people Who have set themselves against me round about. NASB

The word for ten-thousands, ‘rababah,’ means an indefinite number, countless enemies, whether large or small in number.

To set themselves, ‘shiyth,’ means to array in an organized effort of purpose. This opposition is not by accident, but one of intention.

Round about, means on every side, from every angle.

The world is full of enemies. There is unfairness and bias and prejudice and handicaps galore. Whether physical or mental or social or financial, the world has more angles of attack than one can even begin to count.

Take two piles of dust and set them beside one another. Which is the better pile? And yet one pile will presume that it is the better pile of dust and try to take advantage of the other, even to the point of eliminating the other pile.

And yet God took human life and created it out of nothing. With no substance, no color, no culture, no background whatsoever, and inserted it, human life, into a pile of dust, and said to that pile of dust, ‘Obey Me, and I will give the universe to you.’

All of the world is nothing but a large number of piles of dust who presume that they can out maneuver, out smart, out do, God.

To the obedient, to the humble, to those who pursue their spiritual lives in accordance with Gods will, then the power and sovereign will of God becomes the ultimate fortress and palace and temple and destiny, forever.

5 I laid me down [shakab] and slept; [yashen] I awaked; [quwts] for the LORD [Yahovah] sustained [camak] me. KJV-Interlinear

5 I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustains me. NASB

In the Psalm 1, we learned that doctrine is the basis, foundation and source of our ultimate goal, blessings, which God has prepared for each one of us.

In Psalm 2, we learned that the second person of the Trinity, received the title, Son, in order to accomplish Gods plan for all of creation and especially for humanity.

In Psalm 3, we have already learned that trouble surrounds us. We are outnumbered by far, according to worldly enemies. But despite being so outnumbered, God provides for us, a shield, a defense, and a glory that all comes from Him.

We are nothing, but He is everything, and in grace, He provides us with a phenomenal life for the mere effort of believing in Him and learning His word.

Faith in Christ provides salvation, and that is a single decision that lasts us forever.

Doctrine provides spiritual maturity and is the means for achieving a completed life, within a sphere of protection of which nothing and no one can remove from you.

Therefore, for the person who is obedient to God, fulfills His mandates, namely conducts himself in an orderly and consistent manner in studying the scriptures daily, learning them, understanding them, utilizing them and adopting Gods will for ones daily lifestyle, then this verse applies.

Whether you are awake and conscious and aware (or not aware) of the things that are going on around you, or asleep and therefore totally unaware of what is going on around you, then you can rest assured and relax and sleep in peace and confidence, knowing that God is watching over you.

God has a plan for your life. You function in that plan, when you comply with His will (not your own) for your life. Gods objective for your life is for you to receive blessings (plural), which means that you are to have a completed life, which means that you are to advance to spiritual maturity through conforming with His method for growing up, not yours.

So long as you are advancing in accordance with His will, then nothing, and no one can intervene in your life, or prevent you from achieving Gods goal, for you.

That does not mean a long life, but it does mean that the completeness of your life will be achieved, and that will last you forever. You will never lose out on eternal blessings. So you can live your life with calm and sleep in peace knowing that God will guard your soul completely.

Revelation 12:8

8 And [kai] prevailed [ischuo] not; [ou] neither [oute] was [heurisko] their [autos] place [topos] found [heurisko] any more [eti] in [en] heaven. [ouranos] KJV-Interlinear

8 and they were not strong enough, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven. NASB

Satan and his demon followers, will be evicted out of Heaven, and forced to go to the only other place available to them, earth.

They could have gone to another galaxy, or to another planet, but the angelic conflict is still ongoing and Satan and his demon followers have already been sentenced to the Lake of Fire. Therefore, they have no other choice but to go to planet earth and try to defeat God on the ground, here on earth.

Currently there are two distinct realms which are totally mutually exclusive with no overlap between them. There is our universe, and there is heaven.

In Job, we learned that our universe is in a vault, and that God (figuratively for omni-presence) walks around the perimeter of it from His place in Heaven.

Satan is evicted out of heaven, and therefore that implies that there is a definite boundary, over which he will no longer be permitted to cross.

Man cannot enter into heaven, except through being saved by faith, and at Gods convenience when death forces us out of this world.

We generally think of our universe as endless and infinite, with popular theories of its expansion and inevitable collapse, followed by big bangs and such. However, that is not the case.

Just as all of humanity has limitations, this physical universe also has limitations. In the case of our universe, its limit is beyond mans limitation to see its edge.

Certainly we can see approximately fifteen-billion light-years, and with technology advancements, someday, we should be able to see or detect things in our universe that are even further away. But, we will never see its edge, wherever that might be, and we will never be able to see heaven with our human eye or through anything in our physical world.

Needless to say, there is a boundary, and Satan is going to lose his right of access in to heaven, permanently.

Consistent with the sounding of the seventh trumpet, consistent with the final decree of God, consistent with the finality of evil’s rule on this earth, this is but another sign that the end is really, really near, and that there is going to definitively be an end to the rule of evil on this earth.

However, when Satan is evicted out of heaven, that means bad news for those in our world, Rev. 12:12. Satan’s full fury in frustration and panic, will explode against Jews, against believers, and finally against all of humanity, in his effort to thwart any aspect of success in Gods plan.

Satan will fail, but he will never accept his defeat.

Unfortunately, there are many people who are so rigid in their thinking, that they too, will never change, or even attempt to see the error of their beliefs.

For unbelievers, their error is in refusing to believe in Christ. For believers, there error is in refusing to advance, properly, in their spiritual life.

Satan will fight to prevent Christ from establishing His Millennial Kingdom. Satan fought to prevent the restoration of Israel after their captivity and was rebuked, Zech. 3:2.

Satan is called the god of this world, 2 Cor 4:4, the prince of the power of the air, Eph 2:2, his demon hosts are called spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places, Eph 6:12.

Satan tried to hinder the ministry of the holy angels to Israel, Dan 10:12-13. Satan prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour, 1 Peter 5:8, he opposes the spread of the gospel, Matt 13:19,37-39; Acts 13:10, he oppresses individuals, Luke 13:10-16; Acts 10:38, he uses sin to disrupt and pollute the church, Acts 5:1-11.

Believers are to be wary of his schemes, 2 Cor 2:11, and give him no opportunity, Eph 4:27, and resist him, James 4:7. Such resistance is by means of spiritual growth, not by means of anything that you do.

7 And [kai] there was [ginomai] war [polemos] in [en] heaven: [ouranos] Michael [Michael] and [kai] his [autos] angels [aggelos] fought [polemeo] against [kata] the dragon; [drakon] and [kai] the dragon [drakon] fought [polemeo] and [kai] his [autos] angels, [aggelos]KJV-Interlinear

7 And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the dragon. And the dragon and his angels waged war, NASB

Since the fall of Satan, eons ago, there has been an ongoing conflict between God and Satan. At some point in the past, two-thirds of the angels decided to side with God, while one-third of the angelic population decided to side with Satan.

Angels have lived for a very long time. They have lives that have lasted perhaps tens of thousands or millions or even billions of years. We just do not have any idea as to how long they have been around. Only that they existed before the universe was created, and apart from that, we know nothing.

Angels live in this physical universe. However, they can be seen or they can make themselves invisible. They can travel between the earth and heaven. They, demons, can even take over or indwell humans or animals under certain circumstances. But again, we have no knowledge of their makeup, strengths, or weaknesses.

All that we do know is that between the good angels and the bad angels, there is an ongoing conflict, Isa 14:12-14; Ezek 28:11-18, and there is some type of ability or weapon or power, that allows one or the other to overcome their opponent. Again, we have no knowledge of what that ability is.

One day soon, there will be a final conflict between Satan, and the angels who have sided with God.

This final battle will be between Michael the archangel, Jude 9, and Satan.

This battle is herein described as a horrendous war. The repetition of the word fought, ‘polemeo,’ describes a fierce battle. For Michael, it will be a battle of purpose and finality, and for Satan, it will be a battle of accelerated frustration and panic.

Up until the middle of the Tribulation, when this battle occurs, Satan will have had free access into heaven and before God. This free access will come to a halt, thus signaling the end of Satan’s endless stream of accusations against humanity, believers and Jews.

6 And [kai] the woman [gune] fled [pheugo] into [eis] the wilderness, [eremos] where [hopou] she hath [echo] a place [topos] prepared [hetoimazo] of [apo] God, [theos] that [hina] they should feed [trepho] her [autos] there [ekei] a thousand [chilioi] two hundred [diakosioi] and threescore [hexekonta] days. [hemera] KJV-Interlinear

6 And the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she might be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days. NASB

The woman, remember, is the symbolic reference for the nation of Israel. It is not a reference for Mary or some other specific person.

The nation came out of Egypt long ago, and spent forty years in the desert. While in the desert, they were provided for by God. That was the first generation of the nation.

Now in their last generation, the nation will come under the greatest suffering that they have ever been subjected to in all of their history.

Jesus referred to the last half of the Tribulation, as the Great Tribulation. The last three and a half years will see the most horrible judgments and torments against humanity in all of human history.

For forty-two months, or more specifically for 1260 days, God will care for the Jewish peoples who obey His command and head to the mountains at the mid-point of the Tribulation.

At that mid-point, the anti-christ will commit abominable acts in the newly opened Temple in Jerusalem. This dedication of the temple is only a ruse for the beginning of the greatest oppression and attempted genocide of the Jews, ever.

Jesus warns that when the abomination occurs, then time is up, Matt. 24:15-21. Get out of town and do not even go home to get things. Just go and do not look back, as Lots wife looked back.

Their hiding place will be in the mountains to the east, Dan. 11:40-41. And not to worry. The anti-christ will have a military organization, however remember that during the first three and a half years of the Tribulation, there will be horrible atrocities and judgments as well. His military will not be in good working order.

And just as many people who obey this command, will not have any supplies, God will create supplies for them during their hiding out time for the last forty-two months of the Tribulation. Those who obey and stick to their obedience, will be cared for. Those who give up, get impatient, try to sneak back into some city, give away their hiding place, listen to propaganda of Christ’s return, etc., will be captured and end up in some torture cell and then dead.

It will not be a fun time for folks, and especially for city folks who have to learn to live in the wilderness in hiding, without the comforts and conveniences of home that they have been used to. It is reasonable to assume that there will be many who will not adjust, and therefore will get caught or turn themselves in, and probably just for the promise of a meal and a hot bath, that they will never get.

Satan has been at the throats of Israel since the time of Abraham and Pharaoh and throughout history. Even though he has been defeated at every turn, and especially after the Cross, he is still going to try to destroy Israel at the very end of the Tribulation.

God has one last promise, and that is to bring a saved Israel into the Millennial Kingdom of Christ, Zech 12:10-13:1; Rom 11:25-27. Satan will try his very best to destroy all believing Jews, before the Second Advent of Christ.

And in a time when the odds of survival are totally and completely against them, God will save not just a few, but perhaps many thousands of Jewish believers (as well as gentile believers), who will repopulate the world during the Millennium.

For God, nothing is impossible. That principle applies to you and your life as well.

5 And [kai] she brought forth [tikto] a man [arrhen] child, [huios] who [hos] was [mello] to rule [poimaino] all [pas] nations [ethnos] with [en] a rod [rhabdos] of iron: [sidereos] and [kai] her [autos] child [teknon] was caught up [harpazo] unto [pros] God, [theos] and [kai] to his [autos] throne. [thronos] KJV-Interlinear

5 And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron; and her child was caught up to God and to His throne. NASB

John continues with his historical narrative from the birth of Christ, His ascension, and His destiny to rule.

The nation of Israel, gave birth to the humanity of Jesus.

Jesus is the descendant of David, Rom 1:3; 9:5. Jesus was the fulfillment of prophecy, Gen 3:15; Isa 7:14; 9:6; Mic 5:2. Jesus was of Jewish lineage in that He was a son of Abraham, Matt 1:1, a member of the tribe of Judah, Gen 49:10; Mic 5:2; Rev 5:5, and a descendant of David, Matt 1:1; 2 Sam 7:12-16.

His destiny is to rule the nations, and to rule by means of a rod of iron, Rev. 10; 2:26-27; 11:15; 19:15, Ps 2:7-9.

In our verse, the word for rule, means to destroy. Jesus Christ will return from heaven, from where He is currently, to destroy the nations, totally, and then He will rule during the Millennium, all of those He rescued from all nations, including those saved Jewish people who believed in Him during the latter half of the Tribulation.

The rod of iron means the resoluteness of Christ to rule by truth and fairness, with no compromises in bias, prejudice, or sin of any kind.

Between the birth of Christ and the eventual coronation as King, He arose and ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father. That is where Jesus Christ is right now.

Jesus Christ was exalted by the Father by permitting Him to sit at the right hand of the Father.

The right hand or right side is the place of authority. All subordinates sit to the left, thus the Father is seated to the left of Christ, who is the heir of all power, sovereignty and authority.

This exaltation indicates the Fathers acceptance of the work of the Son, in the Fathers divine plan, Heb. 1:3.

4 And [kai] his [autos] tail [oura] drew [suro] the third part [tritos] of the stars [aster] of heaven, [ouranos] and [kai] did cast [ballo] them [autos] to [eis] the earth: [ge] and [kai] the dragon [drakon] stood [histemi] before [enopion] the woman [gune] which [ho] was ready [mello] to be delivered, [tikto] for [hina] to devour [katesthio] her [autos] child [teknon] as soon as [hotan] it was born. [tikto] KJV-Interlinear

4 And his tail swept away a third of the stars of heaven, and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child. NASB

And why was there even a need for salvation or a plan for salvation?

Because in prehistoric history, even before man was created on this earth, Lucifer, now called Satan, rebelled against God, and took along with him, one-third of the angelic population.

Of this rebellion, we know very little, but only that all of the angels were tempted to follow Satan, at some point during that rebellion, and that two-thirds returned to God, while one-third of their population, did not.

The term for stars in our verse is a reference to angels, Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7; Ps 29:1; 89:6, Gen 6:1-4.

Their primary residence was originally in heaven, but after the rebellion and presumably after their refusal to rejoin God, then their choice to leave heaven (for the world), was made permanent and they were cast out of heaven and down to earth.

As we have already studied, there are demons, a general term used to describe those fallen angels who rebelled and refused to rejoin God. Anyway, there are demons who are locked up in the Abyss. There are demons who are confined in Tartarus. There are demons who have been allowed to roam around the world. And Satan was given permission to travel to and from heaven for a time, or until he is permanently removed from heaven by Michael, at the mid-point in the Tribulation.

From the time of Adam, to Cain and Abel, to Pharaoh, to the period of the Judges, to the dividing of the nation after Solomon, to the birth of the person of Jesus, Satan tried and kept on trying to destroy humanity, the human line of Christ, and Jesus Himself.

Initially, the target was the human race in general. But when the line of Christ became more focalized through Abraham and Jacob and David, then Satan’s target was more concentrated toward the Israelites.

After the Cross, the target again became more general but toward the Jewish race specifically, as it is in the many promises of God toward the Jews, that Satan was and is trying to prevent.

This is a brief summary of history, which spans eons of time beginning prior to the creation of humanity up to and including the birth of Christ.

Satan tried to destroy the birth of Christ. Satan tried to destroy the line of Christ. Satan tried to destroy the one component, humanity, that God created to solve and settle the angelic conflict.

But, as you can see around you, it is obvious that we are here, and that thus far, Satan has failed at every attempt to destroy Gods plan.

And even during the Tribulation, which is still future from our point of view, when the restraint of sin is removed from the world, and evil runs rampant without restraint, God will still protect Israel from total destruction. But I am getting a little ahead of myself here.

4 I cried [qara'] unto the LORD [Yahovah] with my voice, [qowl] and he heard [`anah] me out of his holy [qodesh] hill. [har] Selah. [celah] KJV-Interlinear

4 I was crying to the Lord with my voice, And He answered me from His holy mountain. Selah. NASB

The word for cry, ‘qara,’ is future tense and means when I cry, or when next I cry because of the hardships that surround me, referring to David, in times of trouble.

Thus David has but one response to trouble when it comes into his life, and that response is to turn to God.

David knows that this is the devils world, and that trouble is always around the next corner. It is just a matter of time when trouble will come into his life.

It is the same with you and me, and with us all. This is the devils world. By default, trouble is out there and will find us sooner or later.

Sometimes that trouble will be small, like a broken finger nail. Sometimes the trouble will be great. Like the death of a loved one. And then there are all of the possible troubles in between, so numerous that they cannot be counted.

What is your reaction when trouble raises its head in your life? Do you complain? Do you whine? Do you look for someone to blame? Do you feel sorry for yourself?

Or, do you look to God, accepting that trouble will occur, knowing that it will never be at times of convenience, but knowing that God will have a solution for you, even if it is in the simple training of your mental attitude over that problem. Will you, can you, maintain some poise and self control when trouble occurs.

Perhaps trouble has to enter into your life several times before your training helps you to learn how to deal with it.

Perhaps you are hard headed enough such that you just do not learn.

Perhaps it takes several types of trouble before the light comes on inside of your head.

All of life’s experiences are designed to test your spiritual growth in one way or another. Most people fail.

God always hears your call for help. God always hears you through His holy hill, Zion, which refers to Bible doctrine. Out from His holy hill.

Zion is the tallest point in the city of Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the city of peace. Peace refers to spiritual maturity for that is the end result of maturity. Zion refers to the content of doctrine, the mountain of doctrine, that produces and supports that peace through maturity.

Therefore, help comes from God, through doctrine, which comes to you through learning. You cannot use what you do not know.

Selah, is a pause or a rest. Many are the plans and opinions of man, but Gods plan goes right on, regardless of mans view.

3 But thou, O LORD, [Yahovah] art a shield [magen] for me; my glory, [kabowd] and the lifter up [ruwm] of mine head. [ro'sh] KJV-Interlinear

3 But Thou, O Lord, art a shield about me, My glory, and the One who lifts my head. NASB

The Lord is our shield, our glory, our hope.

The shield is a weapon of war, used in self defense against all attacking enemies and their weapons.

Defenseless and unless, we have some sort of shield to fend off all assaults on our person, man is useless on his own, and useless unless he has some sort of shield to fend off the assaults of life. God provides that defensive shield, Gen 15:1; Deut 33:29; 2 Sam 22:3; Ps 28:7; 119:114; 144:2; 33:20; 84:11; Prov 30:5.

In this world we are helpless. The world is greater than all of us collectively. Only Christ is greater than the world, and only through Christ do we have some semblance of defense against the world.

Bible doctrine is that defensive shield, insulating and reinforcing our soul, placing us within His fortress, before His Temple, in the presence of His Throne of power and sovereignty. Refer back to Psalm 1.

Without Christ, without doctrine, without spiritual growth, we are nothing, dust in the wind, helpless and without hope.

I asked the question online about what folks thought about Obama and his muslim beliefs. Some commented that it was not a bible study question. But in fact it is.

If the leadership of our country, opposes Christ, if those who elected him oppose Christ or are indifferent, does that not have an impact on us, on our country, on the world as a whole? Weak leadership points to a spiritually weak society, and that means trouble.

God is our glory.

As man, we are all nothing more than specks of dust. From dust, the basic elements of the world, He formed us all. From nothing, He created our human life and soul. Bringing the two together, He made is alive in this world. From faith, He again created out of nothing, our human spirit giving us eternal life and the opportunity to live forever with Him in heaven.

Where then, is our glory? Is it from the dust? Is it from our elements? Is it from our own innovation and creation?

No.

Of himself, man is nothing. We only become something when we were made alive, when we learn doctrine, which is truth, when we become complete through spiritual growth, and it is not us who accomplish’s this, but God.

He lifts up our head. That is hope. Without God there is no hope. Without hope there is no future.

When we are burdened and in despair, our heads droop down. And it takes something greater than our despair, something that lifts us up out of that despair, to bring hope of something better. God and only God can accomplish that.

One of the things that is severely lacking in this world is respect.

Men are commanded to love their wives. Women are commanded to respect their husbands. Children are commanded to honor their parents.

Respect is the common thread that holds society together. When it is lacking then trouble rises and destroys the very fabric of society.

Inordinate ambition, adversarial competition, arrogance, approbation, ego and so forth, raise the levels of disrespect in the world, and indifference or rejection of God, of Christ, of doctrine, of Gods mandates, all contribute to the destruction of life.

And then we would have no hope, no honor, and certainly no shield to guard us from an unraveling world.

3 And [kai] there appeared [optanomai] another [allos] wonder [semeion] in [en] heaven; [ouranos] and [kai] behold [idou] a great [megas] red [purrhos] dragon, [drakon] having [echo] seven [hepta] heads [kephale] and [kai] ten [deka] horns, [keras] and [kai] seven [hepta] crowns [diadema] upon [epi] his [autos] heads. [kephale] KJV-Interlinear

3 And another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads were seven diadems. NASB

The first sign mentioned by John is the sign of salvation or the plan for its accomplishment, but under great duress.

The reason for that duress is now mentioned in the second sign, the red dragon, who is Satan, Rev. 20:2.

This is not describing a cuddly cartoon character, but a deadly and evil creature that acts and behaves no better than a lowly predatory animal, who kills not for food or survival, but for the pure pleasure of killing. Jesus described Satan as a murderer from the beginning, Jn. 8:44.

The color red represents blood, and the dragon represents the ferocity of the animal in him, lacking compassion, lacking conscience.

He is said to have seven heads, ten horns and seven crowns.

The seven heads and seven crowns go together, representing the seven empires that Satan was allowed to rule the world through, from the early beginnings of history, namely Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, and antichrist's future empire typically referred to as the revived Roman empire, Rev. 17:9-10.

The ten horns represent that seventh future empire, under the rule of the anti-christ.

Note that our Church Age saw the end of the sixth empire, Rome, and from that time on no empires ruled the entire known world for centuries on end, as they did in the ancient past, and we will not see the last empire of the anti-christ though we will see the components of its being assembled in the latter days of our dispensation. That last empire will have its formal existence revealed after the Rapture.

The final kingdom, ruled by the antichrist, will be a ten-nation confederacy, the ten horns representing the kings who will rule under the antichrist, Rev. 17:12; 13:1; Dan 7:23-25. The shifting of the crowns from the dragon's heads to the beast's horns, Rev. 13:1, reveals the shift in power from the seven consecutive world empires to the final Antichrist and Satan.

While the rulers of the many empires of old and of the future, are many, the actual ruler, ‘his,’ referring to Satan, is singular. Satan is the one who is behind all world problems, all world trouble, all world inequities.

2 And [kai] she being [echo] with [en] child [gaster] cried, [krazo] travailing in birth, [odino] and [kai] pained [basanizo] to be delivered. [tikto] KJV-Interlinear

2 and she was with child; and she cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth. NASB

John continues with a brief review of history. It should be noted quickly here, that there are but two opinions in existence.

The first is that of God, and the second includes all other opinions in the world, Matt. 12:30. There is no third choice.

Second, far too many folks concern themselves with control or mastery or improvement of the world or the solving of its problems. Even if one were to overcome all obstacles of life in this world, the world is still a temporary place. Therefore, even Jesus states clearly that it is far better that your name is recorded in heaven for all of eternity, than to have authority over this world, Lk. 10:20.

With doctrine comes responsibility and with responsibility comes blessing. However, the course of the world is set, and as long as Satan exists, as long as mans sin nature exists, there will never be a utopia that so many seem to yearn for, in total disregard of God, truth, and His plan.

Satan has tried to bring in his world improvements for a very long time. All of the philosophies and opinions of life are based on Satan’s defeat of Gods plan and the establishment of his own. All of the arguments, personal opinions, politics and so forth arise out of differing views on failed plans.

Any elimination of truth from any discussion, makes that discussion useless.

A very long time ago, God created the angels. They lived in happiness. Then God created the universe and the angels were at peace when that occurred. Then the lead angel, Lucifer, became arrogant, desiring to be like God, and rebelled against God, taking one-third of the angels along with him in his rebellion.

Most of the details of those events, we do not have. However, man was created in order to resolve the angelic conflict, over which Satan stole control of the world, through his deception of man. Man lost his position and relationship with God as a result.

Thus the plan to bring man back into a relationship with God.

And here John is providing a brief review of history, in a nut shell. Israel was formed, but in suffering. The reasons for her suffering are stated in the following verses.

But for now, man has been lost and God established a plan for helping man to find his way back.

Israel is referred to as the woman. She is with child. And note that this is all in the past tense, for it has already occurred. This is not a prophecy for yet another child.

The woman is with child, referring to the long and arduous time of pregnancy, leading up to the time of birth. This is a reference to the nation of Israel which began with the multiple promises of God beginning with Adam, carrying on through the line of Christ through and to Jacob and the forming of the twelve tribes of Israel, and right on and through Mary.

All during that time, those many centuries, the line of Christ and certainly the nation of Israel, was under persecution and suffering.

It is referred to as the time of labor, wherein labor pains describe the extremes of giving birth, immediately prior to birth, through a very difficult and painful pregnancy, and labor and birthing process.

Possibly only a mother can understand the implications of this whole process and the many difficulties that accompany pregnancy and birth. But nevertheless this verse describes the suffering of Israel as a nation because of this single promise of God and their role in that plan.

Satan opposes all that God does, and Satan leads opposition against all that are a part of, or conform with Gods plan. Satan is the cause of all trouble in this world. And all trouble is reinforced when people reject truth and embrace the many opinions that come out of this world.

No nation in all of human history has suffered as Israel has, even though there are many groups, cultures, even races that want to make a big deal about their suffering and hardships, which only points to their lack of understanding of truth.

In Christ there is no hardship, regardless of what the world tries. In Christ there is no need for excuses to draw attention to oneself. In Christ there is no need for whining or complaining in order to gain advantage in a world that is going to end anyway.

1 And [kai] there appeared [optanomai] a great [megas] wonder [semeion] in [en] heaven; [ouranos] a woman [gune] clothed [periballo] with the sun, [helios] and [kai] the moon [selene] under [hupokato] her [autos] feet, [pous] and [kai] upon [epi] her [autos] head [kephale] a crown [stephanos] of twelve [dodeka] stars: [aster] KJV-Interlinear

1 And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; NASB

This is the first of seven signs that will be mentioned and all of them will be described as ‘megas,’ or signs that have huge significance in all of creation and/or history.

John begins this chapter with the symbolism that parallels that of Josephs dream, Gen. 37:9-11.

The woman is the second of four women symbolized in this book. Jezebel being the first from chapter two.

This woman represents the nation of Israel as it has often been represented in the Old Testament, Jer 3:1,20; Ezek 16:32-35; Hos 2:2, Isa 50:1.

And though Satan has made every attempt to rid the world of the Israelites, God has promised that Israel will play a prominent role in the last days, not to mention being a notable player in the establishment of Gods Kingdom, Isa 65:17-25; Ezek 37:21-28; Dan 2:44; Zech 8:1-13, which is yet to come. Israel will never be gotten rid of, ever. And they will be a nation during the Tribulation.

Israel will also enjoy a national salvation during the Tribulation, Zech 12:10-13:1,8-9; Rom 11:26.

That should be obvious by their very presence now. Nothing in history happens by accident, and the existence of an actual nation, just further reinforces that Gods plan and maneuvering the pieces of the puzzle of nations into place, is actually occurring. Its existence does not mean that the Tribulation has arrived. The Tribulation will last only seven years and Israel became a nation, again, some fifty-two years ago.

In Joseph's dream, the sun represents Jacob, the moon Rachel, and the eleven stars Joseph's brothers. Joseph's dream parallels Israel's history. Both endured the indignity of captivity in Gentile nations, yet were in the end delivered and exalted to a place of prominence in a kingdom. And just as the Israel of old endured suffering before being exalted, so too, the Israel of the Tribulation will have to endure suffering before it is exalted.

The woman was clothed with the sun and reflects the redeemed Israel's unique glory, brilliance, and dignity as God's chosen nation, Deut 7:6; 14:2; 1 Kings 3:8; Ps 33:12; 106:5; Isa 43:20. It also links her with Jacob (the sun in Joseph's dream), and heir in the Abrahamic covenant. Israel's continued existence as a nation reflects the ongoing fulfillment of that covenant, Gen 12:1-2.

The moon under her feet is a further description of Israel's exalted status. It also includes the concept of Gods covenant relationship with Israel, since the moon was part of the cycle of Israel's required times of worship, Num 29:5-6; Neh 10:33; Ps 81:3; Isa 1:13-14; Col 2:16. But the moon also symbolizes the changing of the times and the seasons, reinforcing the concept that as time marches on (moon under her feet), Israel will always be around. Neither time nor opposition, will remove Israel from history, or from a major role in Gods plan.

The crown is associated with triumph in the midst of suffering and struggle.

The twelve stars, Joseph being the twelfth, on the woman's head, refer to the twelve tribes of Israel.

19 And [kai] the temple [naos] of God [theos] was opened [anoigo] in [en] heaven, [ouranos] and [kai] there was seen [optanomai] in [en] his [autos] temple [naos] the ark [kibotos] of his [autos] testament: [diatheke] and [kai] there were [ginomai] lightnings, [astrape] and [kai] voices, [phone] and [kai] thunderings, [bronte] and [kai] an earthquake, [seismos] and [kai] great [megas] hail. [chalaza] KJV-Interlinear

19 And the temple of God which is in heaven was opened; and the ark of His covenant appeared in His temple, and there were flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder and an earthquake and a great hailstorm. NASB

The temple of God long has been represented as the permanent dwelling of God, and the point of contact of mans communion with God.

The Ark has long been represented as Gods promises and provision for man.

This verse represents that the Temple and the Ark, in history, have now been fulfilled and are now opened up for all to see them for exactly what they are. Believers already know the truth, and now unbelievers will have it thrown in their faces, so to speak, thus obliterating their false beliefs.

Unfortunately unbelievers will cling to their false beliefs, rejecting the total revelation of God and truth.

This is followed by various events and sounds from the Temple within heaven.

Lightning's, voices, thundering, earthquake, and hail, all have been events that have been associated with Gods judgment, and none of which man can prevent.

Lightning's represent flashes and speed, brightness and light.

Voices represent the voice of truth from so many who have believed.

Thundering represents awesome power and force.

Earthquakes represent commotion, shaking or a movement of earth and air as in a tempest or earthquake.

And hail is obvious hail, but here it is more than that. It means to let down, to strike, an interval or gulf or chasm. And here is represents a line crossed that cannot be reversed. Judgment has arrived.

All terms are spoken of in the present tense, because of their certainty of occurring, though they are future events.

Mans utopia will never occur. Mans destiny as ruler of the galaxy or of the universe will never occur.

However, because of mans intolerance, because of mans arrogance, because of mans indifference toward truth, judgment will come. And there is nothing that anyone can do to stop or prevent it for human history.

18 And [kai] the nations [ethnos] were angry, [orgizo] and [kai] thy [sou] wrath [orge] is come, [erchomai] and [kai] the time [kairos] of the dead, [nekros] that they should be judged, [krino] and [kai] that thou shouldest give [didomi] reward [misthos] unto thy [sou] servants [doulos] the prophets, [prophetes] and [kai] to the saints, [hagios] and [kai] them that fear [phobeo] thy [sou] name, [onoma] small [mikros] and [kai] great; [megas] and [kai] shouldest destroy [diaphtheiro] them which destroy [diaphtheiro] the earth. [ge] KJV-Interlinear

18 "And the nations were enraged, and Thy wrath came, and the time came for the dead to be judged, and the time to give their reward to Thy bond-servants the prophets and to the saints and to those who fear Thy name, the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth." NASB

At the end of our current dispensation, the Church Age, a great apostasy will take over the minds and thoughts of the peoples of the world.

Apostasy is not just the rejection of truth, but the embracing of lies. The numbers of new believers which are added to the believing population will diminish to zero, and a great gap in history will occur.

God will then remove all believers at the Rapture, and thus will begin the seven year Tribulation, and final seven years of the dispensation of the Age of Israel. The population of the world immediately after the Rapture, will be a one-hundred percent unbelieving population.

But salvation is not yet over. There will remain millions of people who will believe in Christ during the Tribulation. They will just need some incentive to help them reach out to faith in Christ. That incentive will be the ruined world due to mans failed utopia policies, and from Gods judgments.

Just as the winepress is squeezed down tighter and tighter, to get every last good drop of the juice, so too, God will apply more and more pressure in the form of judgments to squeeze out of an unbelieving world, the very last person who will believe in Christ.

At some point in the latter half of the Tribulation, the good juice will finally be obtained, and the rest of the bad, will finally be judged in ever increasing judgments.

In our verse, that point will have been reached.

Likewise, every person who has ever been born into life, has a reward waiting for them in heaven. Those who reject Christ and die as unbelievers, lose their reward. Their reward will be redistributed to believers.

But just to make a quick note, for all believers who reject doctrine and do not grow up in their spiritual life, their additional rewards of eternity will be lost to them as well, and redistributed to those who do grow up in their spiritual lives. God gives us all every incentive and every opportunity to grow up in our spiritual lives.

All unbelievers and all who reject truth, are in fact the destroyers of the world and life. There is no such thing as a legitimate alternative opinion to replace truth.

2 Many [rab] there be which say ['amar] of my soul, [nephesh] There is no help [yashuw`ah] for him in God. ['elohiym] Selah. [celah] KJV-Interlinear

2 Many are saying of my soul, "There is no deliverance for him in God." Selah. NASB

The taunting of Absalom and those following him are described in 2 Sam. 16. The attitude of confidence in the success of evil is described in 2 Sam. 17.

The power of evil is expressed only in its desire, opinions, and agenda, and goes no further than that.

All of the worlds weapons and resources cannot help evil to succeed. The failure of evil is inevitable.

All of histories empires, nations, and leaders have failed. All of the contemporary powers that be, or those who perceive themselves as being in power, will fail. Because their objectives and agenda and methods which are of evil, will never succeed.

All of those who subscribe to the policies of evil will suffer along with the failures of the leadership of evil.

David was the Lords anointed. David was blessed. The nation was blessed by association with David.

And despite the failures of David and the nation, blessings would have eventually come out on top, to benefit everyone.

But the people rejected truth, and consequently were unable to see the benefits of their lives prior to rebellion, were unable to see the discipline of their lives due to their rejection of truth, and therefore turned to evil, which would only make things worse for all.

When truth is rejected, then God applies discipline in order to set matters right.

When people respect discipline, then truth becomes clear and lives are changed for the better.

However, when people reject truth, and reject discipline, then they pursue evil and make matters even worse for themselves. Suffering increases as a result.

Negative people, embrace evil and presume that God will not be able to help anyone that they reject.

Negative people, embrace lies and presume that lies are their truth. Consequently negative people, negative toward truth that is, gain a false sense of confidence in their opinions and views, and policies, and rush to their own objectives without thought of consequences.

And when things go wrong, then the obvious answer is to find someone to blame.

The verse ends with a pause, ‘Selah,’ or a rest.

For as life bounces from plan to plan for most negative people, Gods plan continues along without even a hiccup. Grace keeps on going.

1 A Psalm [mizmowr] of David, [David] when he fled [barach] from [paniym] Absalom ['Abiyshalowm] his son. [ben] LORD, [Yahovah] how are they increased [rabab] that trouble [tsar] me! many [rab] are they that rise up [quwm] against me. KJV-Interlinear

1 A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son.
O Lord, how my adversaries have increased! Many are rising up against me. NASB

The story of Absalom is found in 2 Sam. 15. Absalom was one of David’s sons. Absalom was a discontented son who lacked for nothing, yet wanted more and more, and was never satisfied.

Absalom lacked truth within his own soul, and as such, was not hesitant to turn against even his own father, David the king.

If Absalom lived today, he would be categorized as a very liberal politician and a rebel to boot. He complained about the government, and complained about how bad life was for everyone.

Then here is his objective. By complaining to everyone, he won the hearts and following of a few to begin with, and then he won the following of more and more people as time went by.

His method and promise, ‘If you will make me the judge, then there will be justice for everyone.’

Absalom was a deceiver. He had his own agenda, and that was to become king. He made promises that everyone wanted to hear, but that he could not and had no intention to, deliver. He was going to take over the government and then take over every aspect of people’s lives, and then make life perfect for everyone.

Does this remind you of anything or anyone in our current day?

The world typically lacks doctrine, because the world ignores doctrine. And when a world lacks and is indifferent toward truth, then it will follow anything and anyone who makes promises that appeal to the sin nature.

The sin nature wants something for nothing; Wants blame to be placed on someone else; Wants no responsibility for self; Wants someone else to pay; Hates, in varying degrees, all aspects of divine establishment.

And though this psalm is speaking from David toward all those who are against him, it illustrates the nature of people and how they increase in numbers against truth, and therefore against God, and by association, against believers who are positive toward doctrine and advancing in their spiritual lives.

Truth brings prosperity and happiness and stability into ones life.

Lies bring a false sense of reality into ones mind, making good things out to be bad, and replacing good with bad, then making it seem that the bad is really good.

Absalom was a deceiver. He used the ignorance of people to deceive them.

Ignorant people are not completely innocent, because they want the promises of deception, knowing full well that they are not legitimate.

When the numbers grow, then trouble grows and when trouble grows then rebellion is not far off.

Rebellion against truth always ends in disaster for everyone.

17 Saying, [lego] We give [eucharisteo] thee [soi] thanks, [eucharisteo] O Lord [kurios] God [theos] Almighty, [pantokrator] which [ho] art [on], [ho on kai ho en kai ho erchomenos] and [kai] wast [en], [ho on kai ho en kai ho erchomenos] and [kai] art to come [erchomai]; [ho on kai ho en kai ho erchomenos] because [hoti] thou hast taken to thee [lambano] thy [sou] great [megas] power, [dunamis] and [kai] hast reigned. [basileuo] KJV-Interlinear

17 saying, "We give Thee thanks, O Lord God, the Almighty, who art and who wast, because Thou hast taken Thy great power and hast begun to reign. NASB

Psalm two signifies that the second person of the Trinity was given the title, Son of God, and to Him was given all authority and dominion over all that exist.

Here in our passage, that concept and truth is reinforced, in the recognition of the elders of Gods divine authority and power, referring to the Almighty.

And to the person of Jesus Christ, referring to the Lord God. The term, Lord, referring to the second person of the Trinity.

And to the eternal nature of Jesus Christ, in using the phrase, who is and who was, making reference to eternity past, now, and eternity future, Rev. 7:2; Deut 5:26; Josh 3:10; 1 Sam 17:26; 2 Kings 19:4,16; Ps 42:2; 84:2; Jer 10:10; Matt 16:16; 2 Cor 3:3; Heb 12:22.

In utilizing His great power, making reference to His undisputable sovereign authority. See also Psa. 24:1.

And has begun to reign, is a reference to Gods final application of judgment over evil and its termination from history.

The ultimate reign of Christ over all the earth is not dependent on any human event or activity of human history, nor on the establishment of the current Church, or any other church, nor on anything affected by humanity.

Christ’s reign ultimately begins historically when the final judgments against evil are initiated, thus defeating and removing evil and its rule.

Jesus Christ controls history. The plan of God is the blueprint of history, which is never altered and never changed despite the efforts of humans and angels to cause changes, to their own liking.

Gods plan reflects all of Satan’s and mans efforts and plans, and ultimately Satan’s and mans failure to bring their own destiny into being.

Mans plans destroy everything. Gods plan preserves and perpetuates blessings, happiness’s, and completeness in those who subscribe to His will.
