9 Thou shalt break [ra`a`] them with a rod [shebet] of iron; [barzel] thou shalt dash them in pieces [naphats] like a potter's [yatsar] vessel. [kaliy] KJV-Interlinear

9 'Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron, Thou shalt shatter them like earthenware.' NASB

The phrase, rod of iron, is an expression for a powerful scepter. A scepter is a symbol of authority and power. However, in this case, the scepter is that of the Messiah’s to whom authority and dominion over all of creation has been given.

The scepter symbolizes power, authority, dominion, and sovereignty over the realm of the ruler. In ancient times, kings and queens and so forth presumed total power over all subjects in their realm, including the right to decide life or death.

In some cases royals would decide based on evidence. In some cases royals would decide based on bias or prejudice. In the hands of humanity, authority is always subject to abuses.

Often times kings would go to war and expend tremendous resources in terms of both people and material, and wars would typically last for years if not decades.

The Messiah, on the other hand, possesses the power to dash His enemies into pieces, as easily as dropping a clay pot on a hard surface.

Clay pots break easily, and when they shatter, they shatter into many pieces and are rendered un-repairable and totally useless.

Such is the power and authority of Jesus Christ. His sovereignty is unmatched, unparalleled, and uncontestable.

God, the Trinity, decided in eternity past, that this one individual, the Son, would represent the Godhead in all capacities. This is for the purpose of separating out all who would presume a relationship with God, by means of their own attributes. And human attributes are laced through and through with sin, beginning with arrogance, and continuing along in the imagination of humanity.

Therefore, in eternity past, the second member of the Trinity was given a title, Son of God, given the office of absolute King, King of kings and Lord of lords, given possession of all of creation and more, His inheritance, and now we have the disclosure that He possesses absolute authority and power, to carry out His will, and the defeat of His enemies.

7 And [kai] when [hotan] they shall have finished [teleo] their [autos] testimony, [marturia] the beast [therion] that ascendeth [anabaino] out of [ek] the bottomless pit [abussos] shall make [poieo] war [polemos] against [meta] them, [autos] and [kai] shall overcome [nikao] them, [autos] and [kai] kill [apokteino] them. [autos] KJV-Interlinear

7 And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them and kill them. NASB

The two witnesses will teach and preach the gospel and doctrine for 1260 days. During that time, nothing and no one can bring harm of any kind, to them.

God has a purpose in life, and that purpose is to get the truth to everyone, such that everyone will have the opportunity to hear truth, and decide what they will do about it.

Evil, on the other hand, tries to do its will in secret, in deceit, by devious methods, and out of sight of everyone. Evil cannot stand on its own when people know the facts and have a clear choice.

Truth on the other hand, stands on its own, and does not need to hide its purpose, but is open and in plain sight of all.

Jesus Christ controls history. Jesus Christ can accomplish things by means of something, or without means. He created the universe out of nothing. He accomplished it by His own will. He created Adam’s body from the dust. He accomplished that creation by using dust.

Christ can use tools or no tools to accomplish His purpose. His lack of using tools, does not mean that he cannot do something, only that His purpose does not require them. His lack of accomplishing something does not mean that he cannot accomplish it.

There is a great deal of evil and suffering in the world. God could surely end it all in a heartbeat, but he chooses not to, because history and the angelic conflict must run its course to the last person born in the last generation of history. To end it all prematurely, would deny all of those future people who would believe in Him, the opportunity of eternal life, blessings and so forth.

Even though evil runs rampant in the world, and seems as though it is in control, it is not. God often times permits the free will of man to run its course.

Likewise, when God has a purpose to accomplish, then nothing will be able to interfere with it, until Gods purpose has run, its course.

And here, within our study, we have a world that has totally flipped off its rocker. God places two individuals in the middle of chaos and judgment so that they can deliver His message to a world gone mad. This is, so that people will have the opportunity to hear the gospel and be saved. Whereas evil is going out of its way to prevent the message of truth, in its attempt to cause everyone to lose out on salvation.

For 1260 days straight, God prevents harm in every form, from coming to His messengers.

And remember that anyone who attempts or even orders harm to the two witnesses, will die.

So, when the 1260 days has run its course, then guess who comes crawling up out of his little hole of evil, to fight the two witnesses?

Here, for the first time in this book, the term beast, is used. And even though it refers to a specific individual, that individual is not identified except in terms of where he comes from, namely out of the Abyss.

So the emphasis is not on the person, but his origin, the Abyss, which represents the quintessence of evil in its worst, worst, worst of forms.

The contrast here is, God bringing good, and evil trying to take it away.

But not until the full course of their ministry is competed does this evil beast, approach them and kill them.

But why do they die? God accomplishes His purpose both in life and in death. Whereas many did not receive Christ as savior during their evangelism, however many will in fact believe in Christ after their death. And that study is just a few verses away.

6 These [houtos] have [echo] power [exousia] to shut [kleio] heaven, [ouranos] that [hina me] it rain [brecho] [huetos] not [hina me] in [en] the days [hemera] of their [autos] prophecy: [propheteia] and [kai] have [echo] power [exousia] over [epi] waters [hudor] to turn [strepho] them [autos] to [eis] blood, [haima] and [kai] to smite [patasso] the earth [ge] with all [pas] plagues, [plege] as often [hosakis] as [ean] they will. [thelo] KJV-Interlinear

6 These have the power to shut up the sky, in order that rain may not fall during the days of their prophesying; and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood, and to smite the earth with every plague, as often as they desire. NASB

Not only can these two not be harmed, but they will grab the attention of the entire world with their abilities to stop or start all rainfall, turn the worlds water supplies into blood rendering them undrinkable and unusable, and cause the spreading of plagues of every type imaginable.

All of this with the mere command of their voices.

During the days of their prophesying, means two things. Their ministry will last for 1260 days, which refers to the days of their prophesying. But also, on the days that they actually teach or preach, that too is a reference to the days of their prophesying.

Presumably they will be standing outside and teaching while various media outlets or resources that they may have at their disposal, will be broadcasting their message to the entire world. Their message of the gospel and judgment is not limited to only the Jews. Everyone around the world will hear them.

Their power will wreck havoc all over the world, sufficient enough to get everyone's attention.

With all of the problems that the world is already having because of the judgments, this will add only more heartache to everyone as the world continues to reject Christ.

The power of these two witnesses is not simply an all or nothing power, but they may initiate any of their powers anytime at anyone, anywhere.

The phrase, as often as they will, means simply that. God has given to them not only the power, but the freedom to apply their powers at their own discretion.

God knows exactly what they will do and when and where and for how long and so forth, and they will do exactly what God intends of them to do without even being told or instructed.

5 And [kai] if any man [ei tis] [autos] will [thelo] hurt [adikeo] them, [autos] fire [pur] proceedeth [ekporeuomai] out of [ek] their [autos] mouth, [stoma] and [kai] devoureth [katesthio] their [autos] enemies: [echthros] and [kai] if any man [ei tis] will [thelo] hurt [adikeo] them, [autos] he must [dei] in this manner [houto] be killed. [apokteino] KJV-Interlinear

5 And if anyone desires to harm them, fire proceeds out of their mouth and devours their enemies; and if anyone would desire to harm them, in this manner he must be killed. NASB

Sometimes the Bible speaks in terms of symbolism, and sometimes it speaks in terms that are quite literal. The phrase, fire proceeds out of their mouth, can be viewed both ways here.

God has used fire to incinerate His enemies in many situations, Lev 10:2; Num 11:1; 16:35; Ps 106:17-18.

And these two witnesses will have sufficient powers and abilities to prevent anyone from stopping their full ministry during the entire 1260 days that God has given to them.

But note, this verse states clearly that anyone who tries to bring them harm or even if anyone wants them harmed, then the same wish or attempt intended for the two witnesses will go right back on the perpetrator.

Be careful what you wish for!

Note something very subtle here. The anti-christ has virtually unlimited power. He could easily order the two witnesses killed, but he does not. Why do you suppose that the order and attempts to kill them, does not come from him, but from others?

Some will know the prophecies, such as this one, but most folks will not know of it. Those underlings who do not know of this prophecy of protection, will try to eliminate the two witnesses, but only to their own surprise and demise.

When we get to the Armageddon study, we will see that the prophecies of the defeat of the southern power, is known by the southern leadership, but they will try to beat the odds anyway.

So, if any person attacks the two, they will be met with fire. End of attack.

If any person wants them killed or issues an order to others to have them killed, in other words, then they will die by the same means as their order.

God knows the orders and attempts that will be made. We do not. But, if you could be a little fly on the wall to listen in, then you would probably hear some of the most interesting conversations ever.

‘Someone needs to do something. But what of the prophecy? Bah! Words that mean nothing. Do it.’
Zap!

4 These [houtos] are [eisi] the two [duo] olive [elaia] trees, and [kai] the two [duo] candlesticks [luchnia] standing [histemi] before [enopion] the God [theos] of the earth. [ge] KJV-Interlinear

4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. NASB

Olive trees produce olives, and olives produce olive oil. Olive oil was a common fuel for lamps back in ancient times.

The candlesticks, ‘luchnia,’ refers to lampstands, into which the oil was poured, saturating a wick which was lit and then the burning wick fueled by the oil, provided light.

In order to understand this verse, we need to go back to Zech. 4. However the key verses are found in Zech 4:6, 14.

Zech 4:6
6 Then he answered and said to me, "This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel saying, 'Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the Lord of hosts. NASB

Zech 4:14
14 Then he said, "These are the two anointed ones, who are standing by the Lord of the whole earth." NASB

Now Zechariah was speaking of Joshua the high priest, Zech 3, and Zerubbabel, the political leader, and their rebuilding of the post-exile temple.

However, this passage also refers to the rebuilding of the Millennial Temple as brought about by the national revival caused by the preaching of these two witnesses we have in our current verse.

If indeed these two witnesses are Moses and Elijah, the method of their return is not described. Only that they will be there when the time is right.

They will not be present with guns and bombs, but only with the Word of God. God will grant them with sufficient power to prevent their demise, such that their ministry will last for the full 1260 days.

The lamp stands represent the light of Bible doctrine. The oil represents the power of the Holy Spirit.

The two olive trees connected to the lamp stands, represents the constant pouring out of oil, fueling the lamps which remain lit continuously.

These two witnesses will preach the gospel of Christ, resulting in the greatest revival in all of human history. Most will die as martyrs. Some will survive to fight the anti-christ. Some will survive and remain alive to go into the Millennium.

Therefore, while the world will try everything in its power to destroy Jerusalem, to destroy the Jews, and to destroy these two witnesses, the world will fail. God will succeed by means of the spoken word alone, 'Not by might nor by power [worldly], but by My Spirit.'

And so a great revival, the greatest in Jewish history, will result in huge numbers of Jewish persons believing in Christ.

Standing before God, means that they will be preaching and teaching truth, the gospel, and doctrine, with complete support and authorization from God, as His legitimate representatives.

Needless to say, this also implies a vastly larger population total number, as huge numbers will reject Christ, also.

3 And [kai] I will give [didomi] power unto my [mou] two [duo] witnesses, [martus] and [kai] they shall prophesy [propheteuo] a thousand [chilioi] two hundred [diakosioi] and threescore [hexekonta] days, [hemera] clothed in [periballo] sackcloth. [sakkos] KJV-Interlinear

3 "And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for twelve hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth." NASB

The Jewish calendar back in ancient times, was based on the lunar activity of the moon, which typically ran twelve or thirteen months of thirty days each.

Our calendar is based on the solar year which is 365 days, which we adjust by one day every four years in order to keep the calendar and sun and moon synchronized.

Te Jewish calendar was adjusted every second or third year, when they added a second, twelfth month, in order to keep their year in sync with the solar year.

In the previous verse, John used the terminology of forty-two months, typically a gentile term, because he was speaking of the outer court and gentiles.

In this verse, John speaks of 1260 days, in parallel with the Jewish calendar, because he is speaking of the two witnesses, both Jewish or Hebrew, if you will, to connect them with their respective dating system.

The reference to 1260 days is an exact count in the number of days. The reference to forty-two months could refer to 1277 or perhaps 1278 days, depending on the exact month and day that the temple is blasphemed. The forty-two month timeframe is more general, whereas the 1260 day timeframe is precise.

However, these two timeframes may not necessarily coincide exactly together. John gives us two different timeframe references, meaning that they are not precisely in sync, but they are both connected with the trampling of the temple concept, as well as the troubled world desperately needing salvation, both of which we have studied in recent verses.

The temple will be disgraced at the mid-point in the Tribulation, and the Tribulation will end in forty-two months with Armageddon and the Second Advent. Remember too, that the mid-point may not be a precise mid-point, but a general timeframe between the third and fourth year of the Tribulation.

For all of the events for these two witnesses to occur, they most likely will be removed from the scene sometime prior to the very end days of the Tribulation. It will take some time for nations to declare war, organize, invade, and so forth. And that does not occur in a single day but over a period of several weeks or months time, most likely. This again, will depend on how well organized or disorganized the militarization of the world comes together in those latter days.

Remember, that by the end of the Tribulation, nearly all of the judgments will have been completed, well over half of the worlds population will already be dead, communications and public services will not be at their best, for obvious reasons, and general chaos will be the order of the day.

The world will however, still be able to view the dead bodies of these two witnesses, from all over the world, so satellite television or some other technology will still be operational for people to use, when that time comes.

The two witnesses will be wearing sackcloth, the clothing of mourning, distress, grieving. The world is in the midst of judgment and these two will be teaching the gospel, and preaching judgment for a world that has been filled with evil and currently undergoing terrible pain, suffering and grieving.

As for the identities of these two individuals, tradition has it that Moses and Elijah will be the ones who will return and become Gods witnesses in those days. This is derived from several scriptures, Zech. 4, Mal 4:5 Deut 18:15,18, John 1:21; 6:14; 7:40, Matt 11:14, Luke 1:17. And due to the unusual nature of both of their deaths, Elijah never died, but was transported to heaven in a fiery chariot, 2 Kings 2:11-12, and God supernaturally buried Moses body in a secret location, Deut 34:5-6; Jude 9. Both participated in the transfiguration of Jesus.

Whether these are actually Moses and Elijah or not is not really relevant, since an unbelieving world which rejects Christ, would also reject their identities. Some, however, will believe in Christ.

John does not identify them as such, but does refer to identities that are far more important, which we will cover in the next verse.

Even though there will be massive violence occurring worldwide, the gospel from these two witnesses and from the 144,000 evangelists and other sources, will still occur, and will still be effective, regardless of what the world does in trying to prevent their message.

8 Ask [sha'al] of me, and I shall give [nathan] thee the heathen [gowy] for thine inheritance, [nachalah] and the uttermost parts ['ephec] of the earth ['erets] for thy possession. ['achuzzah] KJV-Interlinear

8 'Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Thine inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Thy possession. NASB

This is God, all members of the Trinity, who are all in total agreement with the divine plan, speaking to God the Son, the one to whom the title, Son, was given, the one who is designated to become the sovereign over all things.

Ask of me, is a statement in which the one who is being asked, has the power and authority and resources to answer and/or grant the thing being asked.

What is being asked? To be given the nations and the ends of the earth.

Back in those ancient days, the ends of the earth referred to all things everywhere. Today we would refer to the entire universe and heaven combined.

Therefore, the question indicates and reinforces that God owns all things, possesses all things, and has the power and authority and right to give what He has, to anyone He pleases. The one who pleases Him is in effect Himself, or more specifically the Son, because it is of His work in truth, in creation, in salvation, in spiritual growth, in providing for all of eternity, that pleases God.

Man cannot do any of this, nor even come close. Even though man presumes power and authority and self determination over himself.

All nations, is a reference to all groups, organized or otherwise, right down to the very last individual.

The ends of the earth, is a reference to all of creation and beyond.

This comment was recorded in eternity past, before the angels, before the universe, before humanity ever came into existence.

The destiny of that which God possesses, creates, and controls, belongs solely in His and only His sovereign will.

The reference to inheritance utilizes the common practice or giving ones estate, to ones heir.

In ancient times it was common to bequeath ones estate to the first born son, and if there were more than one son, then the first born received a double portion to maintain the bulk of the estate intact, and the rest was distributed to the others in equal portions. There were even instances when daughters received a portion or all of an estate.

If some of the children turned out to be incorrigible or otherwise rebellious to the parents, then they might not receive their portion of their inheritance, and then the other children would receive more as the bad ones were cut out of the will.

The heathen, is a reference to all who reject God, truth, Christ, the spiritual life as defined by God, and so forth.

All unbelievers will be cut out of the will and the family entirely.

Jesus Christ will receive as His inheritance all that exists. This does not imply that God is going to die, but is a statement that God has owned and controlled everything since eternity past, and will continue to own and control everything into eternity future. There will be nothing and no one who will change that fact, not Satan, not man, no one.

All of the inventions and designs of humanity will never change Gods plan.

Believers will also receive an inheritance, jointly with Christ. Some, mature believers, will receive more, others, immature believers will receive little if anything.

All believers will be in heaven. All believers will have resurrection bodies. But, all rewards and blessings for eternity will be dependent on each individuals productive use, not works, of their spiritual life.

God has announced the plan. It has been in existence since before all of creation. The plan will not ever change.

God started out owning and controlling everything. God will end up owning and controlling everything.

You can be a part of that plan, or not.

2 But [kai] the court [aule] which [ho] is without [exothen] [esothen] the temple [naos] leave [ekballo] out, [exo] and [kai] measure [metreo] it [autos] not; [me] for [hoti] it is given [didomi] unto the Gentiles: [ethnos] and [kai] the holy [hagios] city [polis] shall they tread under foot [pateo] forty [tessarakonta] and two [duo] months. [men] KJV-Interlinear

2 "And leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the nations; and they will tread under foot the holy city for forty-two months. NASB

Only during the dispensation of the Age of Israel, is there a distinction made between Jews and Gentiles. During our dispensation, the Church Age, that distinction is removed, being neither Jews nor Gentile during our era, Col. 3:11.

The Church Age terminates when the Rapture occurs. All believers who have lived during our era, which has lasted for over 1900 years and still counting, will be removed in a twinkling of an eye, up into the clouds where we will meet Christ, and then whisked off to heaven.

Those left behind on the earth will all be unbelievers at that moment in time. The Age of Israel, which our dispensation interrupted, will resume with seven years remaining in its era. The seven year period is called the Tribulation.

The first half of that seven year period (forty-two months) is called Satan’s failed utopia. The last half of that seven year period (forty-two months) is called the Great Tribulation.

At the mid-point in the seven year period, the anti-christ will desolate the newly rebuilt Temple during its dedication. This mid-point event will mark that mid-point in the Tribulation, leaving forty-two months remaining. By this act, people will know the amount of time remaining.

But remember that during the first half of the Tribulation, a huge number of people will die (one-fourth of the world) at the hands of the anti-christs failed policies. There will be many devastating disasters. It would easily be possible that folks may actually lose track of time on the calendar because of all of those events.

But when the temple is dedicated and the anti-christ desolates it, then people will know with certainty exactly where they are during these last years of that era. The desecration is described by Jesus in Matt. 24:15-20.

And now, John records the measuring of the temple, Christ’s accounting of those who belong to Him, as opposed to those (unbelievers) who will refuse to believe.

The outer court was the area outside of the Temple proper. Unbelievers, described as gentiles, were forbidden to enter into the Temple. Only those who have believed in Christ may enter into a relationship with God.

Unbelievers were forbidden to enter into the temple and were restricted to the areas outside of the temple, indicating their refusal to believe in Christ. Their efforts and ideas and inventions of truth were never allowed to mix with truth.

So, in these verses, John indicates that Christ is now clarifying who has believed, or will believe, and separating them out from those who will never believe.

We have had the seven seals broken revealing all that has been written, will come into being.

We have had six of the seven trumpets announcing that the time of the end is approaching, fast approaching.

There is a pause between the sixth and the seventh trumpet wherein Christ is now revealing the battle lines and who is on which side.

At the mid-point of the Tribulation, the anti-christ will desolate the temple, and that will mark the time for the next forty-two months when evil will trample the temple, the Jews, and the peoples of the world, especially Christians.

In times past in history, the Jews have been the target of horrendous atrocities, however during these forty-two months, the last half of the Tribulation, the atrocities brought against the Jews will be the worst ever in all of human history.

The word for tread under foot, ‘pateo,’ means to literally stamp or pound into dust or nothingness, to destroy, to obliterate such that, what was before, will be totally unrecognizable and unidentifiable.

7 I will declare [caphar] the decree: [choq] the LORD [Yahovah] hath said ['amar] unto me, Thou art my Son; [ben] this day [yowm] have I begotten [yalad] thee. KJV-Interlinear

7 "I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, 'Thou art My Son, Today I have begotten Thee. NASB

This psalm opens up with the question and purpose of humanity. ‘Why does man rage?’

Man rages because his purpose is to separate himself from the bindings of Gods truth. Man pursues lies, in other words. The underlying philosophy of man comes from Satan of course, since it is Satan who is the father or originator of lies. Man is simply following in the footsteps of Satan. And since mans plans all fail, then man is filled with rage as a result of the frustration of his failed plans.

The psalm continues with the purpose of God, which is to set His designated King into power and rule all that exists.

Remember that this psalm follows the first psalm, which teaches us that our ultimate goal in life is happiness, and that happiness, or happiness’s comes only through truth. Truth begins with the recognition of God, namely Christ as savior, and then doctrine for growth to attain completeness in ones life.

Man rejects Gods mandates for either salvation and/or growth, and therefore man never achieves happiness.

And then third, since man has his stated purpose, and God has His stated purpose, then now, in our current verse, God decrees His plan. To decree or to declare, here means to set out as a law or final product. There will be no alterations, discussions, adjustments, or changes in the Plan. It is set in stone, as it were, and is final.

And that decree was to choose the one who would rule. That choice was made in eternity past, when God begat, if you will, His plan for all of creation.

Today, refers to eternity past. Begotten, refers to the decision as being made final.

The Lord said unto me, makes it very clear that in eternity past, two individuals were speaking to each other. The first individual is God, the Trinity, and the second individual is the one designated as Son, the second member of the Trinity.

This is not a reference to the mechanics of new birth of a new individual, but the designation of a title. The title is Son of God. Jesus Christ has always existed. There was never a time when He did not exist.

God looked down through the tunnel of time and saw all of the attempts to bypass His plan, in mans efforts to secure a relationship with God, apart from His plan. Man would lift himself up to Gods level, or bring God down to mans level, by means of mans efforts and design.

Unfortunately, mans efforts and design are all made up of lies, sin, and evil. All of mans plans will end up in a disastrous history ending series of events that will come very close to making man extinct.

Only God can save man from himself.

Therefore, in eternity past, all of the members of the Godhead came to the one and only conclusion, that if they established a rule requiring man to approach God through their designated intermediary, the Son, because of His and only His work for salvation and not of works of mans own, then and only then will they, mankind, be saved from eternal separation from God.

To reject the Son and approach God through ones own works, which is sin, would be rejected by God and salvation denied.

And then of course, in history when the Son is actually born as a genuine human being, then that actual birth will become the reality of the designation that was established long ago. The Son, who is God, will become man, who is human, and thus become the culmination of a plan that was set forth in eternity past.

This verse makes it very clear that the Son is both God and man in one person, the unique person of the universe, whom we know as Jesus Christ.

1 And [kai] there was given [didomi] me [moi] a reed [kalamos] like [homoios] unto a rod: [rhabdos] and [kai] the angel [aggelos] stood, [histemi] saying, [lego] Rise, [egeiro] and [kai] measure [metreo] the temple [naos] of God, [theos] and [kai] the altar, [thusiasterion] and [kai] them that worship [proskuneo] therein [en]. [autos] KJV-Interlinear

1 And there was given me a measuring rod like a staff; and someone said, "Rise and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and those who worship in it. NASB

The Temple has always been associated with the Age of Israel, and never the dispensation of our current Church Age.

In history, there have been, or will be, six Temples. Solomon built the first, Zerubbabel built the second after the exile, Herod built the third during the First Advent of Christ, and the Lord Himself will build the sixth during the Millennium, Ezek 40-48; Hag 2:9; Zech 6:12-13.

The fifth temple will be constructed during the Tribulation.

There is no Temple building per se in eternity, for Christ is the Temple and He will be indwelling each and every believer forever. So the temple will be in each one of us forever.

The Temple layout included an outer court, called the Court of the Gentiles, an Inner Court where all of the people assembled to observe the sacrifices. The separation of these two courtyards, separated symbolically, unbelievers who were in the outer court and who had not yet believed in Christ, and of whom had not yet entered the inner court where believers assembled.

The inner courtyard included the brazen alter where the sacrifices were held, and the laver where the washing representing confession was represented, and the Tabernacle.

Also within the inner court is the Tabernacle with its outer room and inner room. There is a chart on the web site. Go to the charts and maps in the Library menu and then select the Tabernacle chart. The inner room also represents the closest personal relationship with God through Christ (spiritual maturity), and the courtyard where most believers will stand, representing the masses of saved but immature believers who chose to not advance in their spiritual lives.

During the Tribulation, the Temple will be rebuilt on its original site. There is a Muslim Temple currently on that site. When the Temple reconstruction will begin is not specified in the scriptures, however, here in our passage, John is now told to measure the Temple. This is a completed Temple. The Temple will be completed at the mid-point of the Tribulation, wherein the anti-christ will blaspheme the newly consecrated temple by recognizing not Christ, but some other false god.

It is at this mid-point in the Tribulation that God sends a final warning to all believers to run for the mountains. Don’ t stop, don’ t pause, don’t go home to get anything, but go to the mountains and do not look back for even an instant. The mid-point begins the period of the ‘Great Tribulation,’ as described by Jesus. And it will be from that point that the greatest of atrocities from man, and judgments from God, will begin to unfold. Each increasing with ever increasing violence until the very end of the Tribulation.

Johns measurement is not one used in construction, but one used in the taking of an inventory of ones possessions.

God owns the Temple. God owns the Temple and all who are in it. That means that God is instructing John to measure the occupants of the finished Temple to symbolize that all are present. God knows the believers. God knows all who belong to Him. God is herein telling us that He has and is keeping track of those who belong to Him. No believer will be lost.

We are between Trumpets six and seven. We are in a pause. The seven thunders have or will soon reveal their secrets. And soon the seventh trumpet will sound and release the seven bowl judgments which will release a series of non-stop judgments that will not end until Armageddon and the Second Advent of Christ.

This should make it clear that humanity will keep on rejecting Christ right up and until that final world battle and His return. Humanities rejection and evil will increase and the judgments will increase in intensity until the final event.

But in all of the chaos, God knows who belongs to Him and He will not lose even a single person.

11 And [kai] he said [lego] unto me, [moi] Thou [se] must [dei] prophesy [propheteuo] again [palin] before [epi] many [polus] peoples, [laos] and [kai] nations, [ethnos] and [kai] tongues, [glossa] and [kai] kings. [basileus] KJV-Interlinear

11 And they said to me, "You must prophesy again concerning many peoples and nations and tongues and kings." NASB

This chapter represents a pause after the sixth trumpet and prior to the sounding of the seventh trumpet. It is mixed with the wonderfulness of Gods blessings and the bitterness of the repercussions of mans rejection of Gods savior and of Gods well defined spiritual life.

And now John is given a second command to write the details of the visions that he is about to see. Visions that will be far more devastating and horrifying than anything written thus far.

And so John is commanded to write and distribute this book, which he is writing, to all of the peoples of the world, both in his contemporary day, and to all peoples in the future, up and until the Tribulation occurs, and even during.

Today, all of these future events probably seem too bizarre or distant, met for someone else. Today we have disasters but they seem to be elsewhere in the world. Today we have many movies and sci-fi things that tend to desensitize society against horrible things, making them less scary, common place, or even surreal.

And so society tends to not take these things seriously. But, even though society is pursuing a tune of their own making, it is the responsibility of every person to learn and make known these things in truth, and not through exaggerated hysteria.

If the Rapture were to occur today, then people alive today will be caught up in the most horrific events in all of human history, over the course of the next seven years.

If the Rapture does not occur for another century, we still have our obligation to learn of and teach the next generation(s), with the hope that some will heed the gospel and believe, and that some will heed doctrine and grow up, and or survive those fateful future years.

10 And [kai] I took [lambano] the little book [bibliaridion] out of [ek] the angel's [aggelos] hand, [cheir] and [kai] ate [katesthio] it [autos] up; [katesthio] and [kai] it was [en] in [en] my [mou] mouth [stoma] sweet [glukus] as [hos] honey: [meli] and [kai] as soon as [hote] I had eaten [phago] it, [autos] my [mou] belly [koilia] was bitter. [pikraino] KJV-Interlinear

10 And I took the little book out of the angel's hand and ate it, and it was in my mouth sweet as honey; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter. NASB

John was told to eat, and he did not hesitate in eating the little book. John was obedient to the instructions given him.

He did not question. He did not hesitate. He did not doubt, but trusted the one giving him the instructions.

The act of eating, symbolizes the assimilation of the Word of God, Ps 19:10; Jer 15:16; Ezek 3:1-3.

The result of bitterness symbolizes the sadness one should have over the judgment of those who are to be judged, Rom. 9:1-3.

Look around you today and see just how many people seem to be coasting through life without a clue as to what it is all about.

People look no further than their own plans and wishes and activities for life. They presume that what they think and say and do in life is all that there is to life.

People deceive others to get ahead. People take advantage of others to get ahead. People pretend and do nothing in order to slide by in life. People maintain an indifferent attitude toward God, Christ, and doctrine, seeing no value in them. People look no further than whatever it is that they are doing in their Christian life (singing songs, praying, hoping, reciting verses, speaking with what they believe is holy language), but ignoring Gods mandate to study and learn, and all the while believing that their efforts (works) are sufficient to satisfy Gods expectations of them.

And everyone is wrong, seriously wrong.

The scriptures speak very clearly of the path to spiritual maturity and blessing, and that to those who actually pursue it, is very sweet to the soul. However, when looking around and seeing so many who are ignoring something that is so simple, brings a sadness because they will lose out on a tremendous life now, as well as in eternity.

God advises us of the sweet and sour of life. His words are true. Unfortunately too many will never understand this principle.

9 And [kai] I went [aperchomai] unto [pros] the angel, [aggelos] and said [lego] unto him, [autos] Give [didomi] me [moi] the little book. [bibliaridion] And [kai] he said [lego] unto me, [moi] Take [lambano] it, and [kai] eat [katesthio] it [autos] up; [katesthio] and it [kai] shall make [pikraino] thy [sou] belly [koilia] bitter, [pikraino] but [alla] it shall be [esomai] in [en] thy [sou] mouth [stoma] sweet [glukus] as [hos] honey. [meli] KJV-Interlinear

9 And I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little book. And he said to me, "Take it, and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey." NASB

John went as instructed, took the book and ate it.

In his mouth, the taste was sweet and good, but in his stomach, it soured and became bitter.

When one eats good tasting foods, they always taste good while in the mouth where the taste buds are.

But often times after we have eaten, the foods, though they tasted good, will not agree with us and they upset our entire intestinal tract. We end up in the toilet or worse, and often times it takes a while for the bad to clear itself through our system.

And here we have a picture of Gods instruction to learn and acquire doctrine (eat),
of Johns obedience to following that instruction to inculcate the doctrine (eating),
the digestion or metabolization of the doctrine (learning and understanding),
and finally the realization of the consequences of the thoughts and actions of humanity as revealed by truth.

There are two view points from this reaction. As for John, who probably knows more doctrine than you and me put together, the realization is of the realities of judgment as a result of mans rejection of truth.

For most folks, the bitterness of discovering the truth will come after they realize that they have rejected it, rejected Gods mandates, refused to study and learn and grow up as mandated, and therefore the consequences of their refusals will result in the bitterness of lost blessings.

Not bitterness like bad feelings, or an upset stomach, or angry because of being left out, but bitterness being used as a description of losing something, as opposed to happiness in receiving something. Both are emotional terms, but they describe either the victory or the loss, whichever applies.

God has left us with doctrine for a very long time. Truth and His wishes for us, doctrine and His mandates for us have been known to everyone who has ever lived. You know them. No one has any excuse for not knowing Gods will. No one has any excuse for not knowing the repercussions of ignoring Gods mandates.

Unfortunately far too many folks do exactly what was described in Psalm 2, which we just finished studying, pursuing their own version of truth, designed and defined by their own imagination, wishes, convenience, and will. In an attempt to escape from and release themselves from truth (Gods truth).

This principle applies not only to unbelievers, but especially to believers who reject Gods call to study and learn and understand and obey doctrine. Far too many folks just do not want to do that. Too, inconvenient to their life. Too, inconvenient to how they want to approach life. Too, inconvenient as to how folks want to live their life.’

In other words, people want to do things their way, and not Gods way. Therefore, when truth finally hits them square in the face, then their own plans turn to bitterness, soured and diarrhea. They lose in other words, with great embarrassment.

Sometimes folks realize the error of their ways while they are still alive in this world. Perhaps some accident or disaster, or loss brings them to this realization.

But too, there are a lot of folks who never learn, refuse to learn, reject with great stubbornness, and what is worse, they become obsessed with being set in their ways and that leads to their refusal to being taught.

They do not see their ways as being wrong, but only that life has not yet discovered how to treat them right. And so their life becomes a roller-coaster ride until the end of their life. Then and only then do they discover the error of their stubbornness. And again, unfortunately, that error lasts for them, forever in lost blessings, or worse in the case of unbelievers.

John knows his eschatology. John knows what to expect in the last days. He did not know the extent of the destruction and terror prior to these visions, but he is realizing it very fast.

Bible doctrine is not all rose petals and aroma, but is filled with the results of judgment for rejection of truth.

On the one hand, we can learn the details of the judgments, and be in awe or just curious about them as we would be in a story book, wanting to read it in order to know it. But on the other hand, there is the realization that the world is heading for a very traumatic future. And because we are the links in the chain of history, we are a part of that future.

And again unfortunately, too many folks around the world are pursuing invented rules for society, invented rules for government, rules that embrace lies (such as in socialism) which will lead to disaster, rather than truth (such as authority such as in wives toward husbands or children toward adults, or free enterprise, or legitimate marriage, or privacy, and so forth).

And this rejection of truth becomes an embrace of apostasy, which will inevitably lead to the Tribulation.

All roads in mans future lead to the ultimate judgment, and that is the bitterness or disappointment of knowing what lies ahead. Because with doctrine, everyone's life could so easily be far better off, but stubbornness prevents people from having a happy life now, and a phenomenal life in eternity.

And so we have the upcoming blast of the seventh trumpet, the seven thunders, not revealed, and the bowl judgments that will literally turn the entire world upside down. Ninety-nine percent plus, of the entire population of the world, will be dead when it is all over.

That is what the world has to look forward to, not environmental protection, not social reform, not social justice, not redistribution of wealth, not guarantees for life.

God will end all sin and evil and atrocities in order to bring in a better future (sweet), but it will cost a huge price (bitterness) for people who resent and reject God and His truth.

Psalms 2:6

6 Yet have I set [nacak] my king [melek] upon my holy [qodesh] hill [har] of Zion. [Tsiyown] KJV-Interlinear

6 "But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain." NASB

While it is mans plan to cast off Gods rules and mandates, and go mans own way through eternity, it is Gods plan to install truth and justice and place His own King into power to rule forever.

This expression is coming from God Himself. God makes this statement in reply to mans statement from verse three – to cast away their (Gods) cords, etc.

Man has his plans and God has His plans, and neither set of plans are compatible with the other.

Verse three refers to God in the plural, a reference to the Godhead (Trinity) from mans point of view, in rejecting God, His plan, and His Savior and Ruler. This verse refers to God collectively in the singular, referring to all three members as one united purpose and plan.

Likewise, this verse sets the stage for a strong relationship between God and His selected King (verses man and mans selected rulers), and that this selected King will rule from a Holy place, namely Mt. Zion - truth, (verses man who will rule from the source of the world – imagined truth or lies).

Mt. Zion was, or is, the southern hill in the city of Jerusalem. It was the highest point within the city. Whereas Jerusalem is often called the city of peace, Zion is often called the site of power, the holy hill, the hill of holiness, the residence of God. It was called that because it was set apart (separated from humanity, sin and evil and death) and therefore became the symbolism of Gods residence.

No man can approach the hill, Zion, unless they first enter (salvation) into the city, and then walk or travel through the city (spiritual growth), and then gain full access to the mountain (maturity).

However, Zion is the residence of God, and to rule there and reside there, one must be Himself, God.

So this psalm is not only setting into contrast mans plan verses Gods plan, but it is setting the stage for presenting the King, Gods appointed, as one and the same as the Messiah, Gods chosen, who is both man (born), and God (deity), in the same person, the unique person of the universe, Jesus Christ.

‘God has set.’ This indicates that Gods plan is the one and only plan which will prevail. Mans plan(s) will not.

Gods plan will prevail on truth. Mans plans are made up of nothing more than imagination (deceit, lies, made up things).

God will carry forth His own purpose and plan for all, despite all opposition and attempts of man (or satan) to do otherwise.

5 Then shall he speak [dabar] unto them in his wrath, ['aph] and vex [bahal] them in his sore displeasure. [charown] KJV-Interlinear

5 Then He will speak to them in His anger And terrify them in His fury: NASB

He, Jesus Christ, who is God, speaks or replies or answers, with truth. ‘Them,’ who are the heathen, the ones who lack truth or correct perspective in life, are the ones to whom doctrine (truth) is spoken.

Heathen is a term that applies to anyone (perhaps you) who lacks doctrine in their soul. If you do not have a daily habit of learning truth, then you lack truth. And in lacking truth, you are ignorant of truth, and therefore classified as a heathen.

It matters not how you dress, how you speak, or how you act. Heathenism is based on the content of the soul, not the outer appearance.

Content of the soul determines how you view life, whether through fact or fiction, whether through humility or selfishness, whether through objectivity or prejudice, whether through concern or indifference, whether through responsibility or irresponsibility.

In any case, God responds with truth – Bible doctrine as taught from the scriptures.

To those who pursue anti-truth, the plans of humanity, God responds with the policies of truth, namely judgment or wrath or punishment.

All anti-truth attitudes and pursuits destroy life and freedom and happiness. Discipline is the only means of correction, designed to gain ones attention and point out the flaws of ones ways.

And in so doing, God vexes those who are spiritually dysfunctional. To vex means to cause trembling, uncertainty, alarm, fear, anxiety and so forth.

Lies have no foundation in life. Truth shatters lies with little effort. Those who rely on lies can never rely on them, and therefore have no confidence in them, and can never gain any trust in them. All of mans theories, philosophies, cults, religions and so forth, are lies, and therefore man will never be able to trust them or rely on them.

Truth displays their flaws, and causes doubt and insecurity, and therefore causes people to vex (become fearful and uncertain and insecure). Hopefully, enough to bring them back to truth and a sound and stable life.

In Gods displeasure, means to cause trembling by means of Gods policy of truth. God is pleased with truth, not lies, fairness not prejudice, happiness not sadness, completeness not incompleteness.

Oppose God and you will receive truth in response. Ignore truth and you will receive discipline in response. Ignore discipline and you will receive judgment in response.

Pursue Gods truth, mandates, principles and you will acquire happiness.

Ignore Gods truth, mandates, principles and you will acquire trembling, insecurity, anxiety, uncertainty, fear.

8 And [kai] the voice [phone] which [hos] I heard [akouo] from [ek] heaven [ouranos] spake [laleo] unto [meta] me [emou] again, [palin] and [kai] said, [lego] Go [hupago] and take [lambano] the little book [bibliaridion] which [ho] is open [anoigo] in [en] the hand [cheir] of the angel [aggelos] which [ho] standeth [histemi] upon [epi] the sea [thalassa] and [kai] upon [epi] the earth. [ge] KJV-Interlinear

8 And the voice which I heard from heaven, I heard again speaking with me, and saying, "Go, take the book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the land." NASB

The voice which instructed John to not write, again speaks to John, and instructs him to go to the angel that earlier descended down from heaven, and was standing on the earth and the sea.

John becomes a participant, representing himself as a participant in the events which are still future (for us). John as a believer in Christ, and as a member of the Royal Family, as we are referred to in this dispensation of the Church Age, likewise extends as a symbolic reference to us (you and me), also.

And this symbolism again is reinforced by what John is about to do.

He is told to take the little book, ‘bibliaridion,’ which is a reference to a booklet or a summary of something larger than itself.

The angel is standing on the earth and the sea, representing total coverage of the world. He is holding the book, which is representative of the summary of all of Gods plan. In the book is writing, Gods writing. Gods plan is in writing and has been since eternity past. His plan is in writing and once written, will not change.

Have you ever gone to a book store, and purchased a book. It is a written document. You read the story and the story never changes, because it is written in a book that you now own and possess.

That is Gods plan. He wrote it down, the book is now open, and therefore revealed to all of humanity, especially to us in the Church Age, for this is our era right now. No matter how many times you read it, the end result is always the same, the content is always the same.

And John is told to take the book, to take possession of the book. He is not going to give it back, but will keep it, and do with it as he is instructed. So too, you have the scriptures, but do you do with them as you are instructed?

And this is what you have before you, Bible doctrine. You have been given Gods word, to study and to learn, to consume and to possess as yours. Some of it is going to agree with you and some of it is not going to agree with you. Such is life. But Gods plan is what it is and whether you agree or not, His plan will continue right along without so much as a hiccup.

To accept Gods word will be a wonderful benefit to you. To reject it or remain indifferent to it, will make life of no benefit to you. That choice is always yours to make.

And so we have still a brief pause before the end, which has already been announced, occurs. Listen and learn and know and understand, lest your life becomes bitter as it is about to become for all who are going to be judged.

It is far better for you to be blessed than to be judged.

7 But [alla] in [en] the days [hemera] of the voice [phone] of the seventh [hebdomos] angel, [aggelos] when [hotan] he shall begin [mello] to sound, [salpizo] [kai] the mystery [musterion] of God [theos] should be finished, [teleo] as [hos] he hath declared [euaggelizo] to his [heautou] servants [doulos] the prophets. [prophetes] KJV-Interlinear

7 but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished, as He preached to His servants the prophets. NASB

The seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the seventh trumpet. This is the last and final trumpet announcing that, that which was foretold, has now arrived.

And with this seventh and final trumpet, the complete mystery of God will be finished.

So what is the mystery? History, its origin, its purpose, its conclusion.

Throughout the scriptures, God has revealed many things and from many of them certain aspects of life and history have been withheld. For most folks who have lived their lives, or who are currently living their lives, or who will live their lives in the future (I am speaking from our point of view now), then because they have not learned doctrine, they therefore are lacking in their understanding.

If you have not studied and learned something, then you simply cannot understand it.

When people die and go to the next phase of their life, their eyes are immediately opened as they see, probably for the first time, the real truths about life and reality.

Remember the story of the rich man and Lazarus? When the rich man died and went to Torments, he immediately knew the truth and that he had not believed in Christ, that his life on the earth was more than his wealth, personal plans, and good times. He wanted to come back to warn others. But everyone has the same warning – Bible doctrine. They will either learn it or not.

When the demons attacked in a phenomenal supernatural way, the population of the world (in the Tribulation), will still ignore the truth of life.

However, for everyone, the truth, mysteries never learned, mysteries never revealed, mysteries that most folks have rejected during their lives, will all become clear and perspicuous to all.

Mysteries hidden in the past that the New Testament reveals include:
the "mysteries of the kingdom" (Matt 13:11),
the mystery of Israel's blindness (Rom 11:25),
the mystery of the Rapture (1 Cor 15:51),
the "mystery of lawlessness" (2 Thess 2:7),
the "mystery of Christ" (Eph 3:4)
the mystery of "Christ and the church" (Eph 5:32),
the mystery of Christ in the believer (Col 1:26-27),
the mystery of the Incarnation (1 Tim 3:16).

Paul saw himself as a "steward" or guardian and dispenser of these mysteries (1 Cor 4:1),
to "bring to light" these mysteries "which for ages [have] been hidden in God" (Eph 3:9).

The mystery of God, (1 Cor 2:7; Col 2:2) of which the angel spoke is that of "the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth" (Eph 1:10).

This is the consummation of Gods plan in bringing His kingdom in Christ to fulfillment.

It involves the salvation of the elect and their place in His glorious kingdom and all that goes with that.
It includes the judgment of men and demons.
The mystery previously hidden refers to all the unknown details that are revealed from this point to the end of Revelation, when the new heavens and new earth are created.
God had preached mysteries (without all the details revealed in the New Testament) to His servants the prophets in the Old Testament, and men like Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Joel, Amos, and Zechariah wrote of end-time events.
Much of the detail, however, was hidden and not revealed until the New Testament (Matt 24; 25, and 2 Thess 1:5-2:12), and in Revelation.

To believers living at that time in a world which will be overrun by demons, murder, sexual immorality, drug abuse, thefts, and unparalleled natural disasters, and on and on, the realization that Gods plan will be revealed as on schedule, the promised kingdom is near, when "the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea" (Hab 2:14), and will bring great comfort and hope to those who will be faithful, in the midst of judgment.

And this final judgment will be one that you should be glad that you will not have to experience. The terror, the death, the mayhem, and confusion will be horrendous.

In the days of the voice of the seventh angel, does not refer to a single day or to a single blast of the trumpet, but to the duration of the final judgments which will last to the end of the Tribulation and culminating with the Second Advent of Christ.

And at that moment of the Second Advent, when Christ’s foot sets down on the ground, then all will end with lightning speed. The saved will be delivered and the condemned will die right where they stand. But we are getting a bit ahead of our self.
